And of all the for- gotten faces ... Remembering speechlessly we seek the great forgotten language, the lost lane-end into heaven, a stone, a leaf, an unfound door. Where? When? —Thomas Wolfe Leading to every opportunity, to every great thing upon the earth, there is a door — a door through which a man need only step if he would possess what lies beyond it. It is the right, the endless challenge, of each individual to try, to test each door until he finds the magical key which will turn the hidden lock. Seek knowledge and understanding, and the key to Wisdom will be within your grasp. Seek nobleness and integrity, and the door of Satisfaction will swing open beneath your touch — pride and honor shall be yours. Search for the doors which lead through the laby- rinth of men ' s minds to their secret hearts and souls, and through your curiosity you may hope to know the intangible, elusive Truth. There is no man who need fear a thing behind a closed door, for once he has opened it, he need go no further. He need fear only when the door remains closed for without, Ignorance is all that waits for him. What is life but a search for a key to a door, an answer to a question, the living of a dream? 5 Being a good teacher requires a sense of responsibility, a certain amount of sacrifice, and a great deal of perceptiveness. For the subject with which a teacher works, the object of his efforts, is a human being. To develop any individual to his fullest ability requires that attention be given to his mental and his physical potentials. Bud Phillips, in his role as teacher and coach, contributes to both of these ends. For his sacrifice, for his perceptiveness, for him and to him, the 1964 Tau is dedicated. And as we grew older we began to perceive, we began to acquire wisdom. And with the wisdom came joy, and with the joy came confusion, and with the confusion came quest- ions. And the questions still are not answered. As our infant eyes opened to the light of day and the darkness of night, this earth became our sea, and the pulsating tides and the living winds became humanity, and the clouds became our dreams. And the earth took shape, and we hved. Our lives have become a search, and all the things that we feel on earth become molded into our spirits. And we share our spirits through friendship. All of us together are seeking the same things — a place where we belong, something to believe in, some- thing to love, something to respect. We know nothing of ourselves because inside us is uncertainity; we know nothing of our fellowmen, because we know nothing of ourselves. And then, suddenly, there is a vital something in our lives, and we know, without knowing why or how we know, that our fears, our doubts, our dreams, are not solitary ghosts within our own minds, but are a part of all men. So we understand that this thing we feel is only life, that what we feel has been felt by Humanity since Creation, and will be felt until the earth is no more, and there is no being among us who is remote from its power. 10 We have passed through the doors marked Curiosity seeking Wisdom, yet knew not what we sought. This Wisdom is an indefinable thing, and means a thousand different things to a thousand different people. Yet it is not foreign to us. It makes the word ignorance void of meaning, for there really is no ig- norance. There is no man who can see through another man ' s eyes, or think with another man ' s mind, and to each individual there has been given a talent to utilize in his life and a purpose for which to utilize it, and no other man can fulfill that purpose. There is only one thing which a man must do if he is to accomplish his purpose; he must try, if he would give meaning to his life. There is only one set of standards which exists which is enduringly meaningful, that which a man sets for himself. He need compare his achievements only to his own ability. His only moral obligation is to himself, also, for he must live with himself before he can live with other men. 12 The increasing years of our lives have brought us back now to the seas and the clouds, and we ponder the winds and the tides with far different thoughts from the ones of our childhood. The tides would have lulled us once, but now they beckon like the ageless hand of Time. We feel that if we could but read the chronicles on the sands and the rocks, could but decipher the tongues in which the winds speak, we would need to know nothing more. If we would but capture and possess the elusive Truth which leaves forever a melancholy, empty longing in our souls, we would need no more fulfillment. 13 It is all so familiar, so near, and yet so far away. We know it all so well, and yet we know it not at all. The stadium in Autumn ... new, steel, concrete ... we had seen it with our own eyes become a reality ... The lights are like monsters with a score of garish eyes, and the people are those we know, and the exhilaration is created by enthusiasm ... The game is ours as much as the players ' ... The game is important, the winning of it matters, but the fight— the exhilaration — this is what we have come for. A procession of cars turns in. It turns in every night, and the people in the cars go to the glass window and buy French fries or hamburgers or drinks ... and then they sit in their cars and eat, or just sit in their cars. The men behind the glass wear white; the Apple Jacks are brown and crystalled with sugar. Two horns blow, three, then all the drivers in all the cars blow their horns. On WOOW they are playing Lucky Old Sun or the Beatles, but in the cars all the occupants listen to the same record. And there are lines of people going to buy ham- burgers, but few of them have come to buy hamburgers ... Fifth period. Not too hot, not too cold. Average. Very average, except for the excite- ment there. Holiday soon! Thanksgiving. Students and teachers, I don ' t like to in- terrupt, but occasionally something comes to my attention which 1 feel the student body should know about. The President and the governor of Texas have been shot. Let us pray together for a moment. Silence. Sixth period. Again the voice from the little box on the wall. The President has died. 16 Three windows in the back of the room are open ... it is 1:47. Lea Vd., por favor, Senor Marcos. And, The ' Miller ' s Tale ' was one of Chaucer ' s better attempts, but our literature book does not include it ... Bonjour, Jean. Comment vas-tu? ' But Seiior Marcos does not care to read, though he must. Chaucer ' s Miller ' s Tale remains in the past, for it means nothing at 1:47 in 1964 when it is almost Spring. And Jean is a long way from France. Because this is now, this is liere, this is what matters, and across the athletic field, across Fourteenth Street, a train is passing. One ... two ... three ... ten ... twenty ... Norfolk and Southern ... sixty-five ... C O ... one hu ndred thirty cars! Wish I was on it. Maybe I will be, someday. 17 The time is passing faster now, because the end is near. It is Spring. The gym floors are still shined and the bleachers are still filled sometimes, but the fight is gone from them until next year. Pitcher ' s mounds become alive again, and the dust hangs on the warm, air. The people walking between the shacks are driven by no cold winds, and the birds on the other side of the wall in room 125 have good reason to sing. The stadium is still young. It is haunted by only a few ghosts now, but even the ghosts are still young. Soon there will be living ghosts upon those steps, apparitions floating white-clad through the night, across a plat- form and onto the ground. They will pass solemnly into the future, and go on to greater things. The people who have come to see the ghosts will file out slowly, the lights will dim, and the dark, massive monster will hear only the echoes of voices and feel only the footfalls of shadows. 18 Ghosts. These halls would be full of them if there were room. But there is no room. There is scarcely time to speak of ghosts. This place no longer belongs to them, for they have served it, and it them, so that their destiny lies far beyond it. 19 Theirs is the search. Theirs are all the battles. They have a way to follow, Wolfe ' s lost lane-end into heaven, Longfellow ' s foot- prints in the sands. They leave behind them irrevocable things — things and people of youth, and imagination, which they can never recapture. It is unbearably sad. But they own the future, and that is un- bearably tantalizing. They possess the world if they desire it. For they are closer to reading the scriptures of the sea; they are walking once more upon a cloud; they may even hope to understand the voice upon the wind. 20 21 22 St ad e fit STANDING COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN John Home President; Richard Yeats, Vice President; Joanne Kares, Secretary; Bill Wilkerson Treasurer; Jean Harvey, Roving Rep; Mr. John Withrow, Mrs. Dorothy Brannon, Advisors. 27 MR. As we pause for a moment, how- ever, we realize that our efforts will not have been in vain if, in reading this book for the first time, you gain, even minutely, more insight into the meaning of what you have encountered at Junius H.Rose High School. And if today, tomorrow, or a year from now, you read a page and smile, and rem- ember, our purpose will have been achieved.
