X 'R Miss faura Bell To a teacher who can hc depended upon at all times for sound advice and encouragemcntg a friend of thc students and faculty who works conscientiously and unsclfishly without losing hcr patience or scnsc of humorg a woman who is quiet and unassuming, refreshing in hcr delight in thc truc, thc pure, and the fairg a worker whose understanding and unfailing endeavors in our behalf have endeared her to Rose High School: to Miss Laura M. Bell, we dedicate the 1962 TAU. 8 To love some one more dearly every day, To help a wandering child to find his way, To ponder o'er a noble thought and pray, And smile when evening falls- This is my task. To follow truth as blind men seek for light, To do my best from dawn of day till night, To keep my heart fit for His holy sight, And answer when He calls- This is my task. And then my Savior by and by to meet, When faith hath made her task on earth complete, And lay my homage at the Master's feet, Miss Bell models her new dress. Within the jasper Waus- This crowns my task. Maude Louise Ray Miss Bell enjoys listening to the radio which the faculty gave her. 9 X X X A 1-Alf 31154: -3 K H-CN :L Ii ix ..,,, , X, s xxx A w F.. . if ai' 1' X - A A S. .t Ne 'N X 5 at 4: X X x si' , .xx X Q ,. As a reward for his hard work, the local business men presented Bud with a '62 Ford station wagon. He also serves as baseball coach, 1. V. basketball coach, and civics teacher. Fishing at Morehead consumes much of Phillips time. Athletic Director, basketball coach, golf coach, and P. E. instructor are only a few of ROLAND F ARLEY'S duties at Rose High School. He also serves as advisor for the Monogram Club. Besides enjoying thick chocolate milkshakes, Bon also finds time for golf and bird hunting. COACH DON BENNETT comes to Greenville after three highly successful years at Warrenton. His college career was spent at Atlantic Christian College where he excelled in baseball and track. In Greenville, Bennett teaches math, as- sists in football, and coaches wrestling and track. Bennett enjoys golf and hunt- ing ducks, geese, and deer near his home town, Aurora. 162 gooihall at a glance . Joe Lughes, past Tennessee great, gives in- valuable assistance to Phantom linemen. You learn to take the bad with the good. . . Conference feacler - GREENVILLE 26 AHOSKIE 6 A tough Ahoskie team came to town ready to take the highly rated Greenville eleven, but came out on the short end of the score. It was the only defeat of the year for the Indians. GREENVILLE 21 IACKSONVILLE 13 The fired up Cardinal team fell after a hard fought contest. Rommie Brock intercepted a pass to secure the Win. He didn't go far. . . GREENVILLE 7 TARBORO 20 It looked like the 60-61 season as soaring Green- ville was dropped again by Tarboro, the defending champs. Andresen provided the only tally. - Rolls io Victory Mac's on the loose . . . GREENVILLE 42 HERTFORD 13 Hertford's Indians were scalped! Rose High's smashing offense scored at will and Coach Phillips turned it over to the reserves in the second half. Blocking looks good . . . 1 GREENVILLE 14 ELIZABETH CITY 0 The E. C. Homecoming crowd saw a very ex- citing game. Neither team scored in the first half, with Greenville finally winning after a 71-yard quarterback sneak by Billy Iames, and a 75-yard run by McArthur, and a fine goal-line stand. GREENVILLE 21 NEW BERN 13 The powerful single-wing attack of New Bern was stopped by the even more powerful Men in Green. Russell Fields looked good as the Home- coming victory placed us in a tie for the confer- ence lead. Adams romps . . . GREENVILLE 41 WILSON 7 The defending 4-A Champs put up a rough battle but the breaks of the game and the enthusi- astic Phantoms finally overcame the Cyclone de- fense. GREENVILLE 48 ROANOKE RAPIDS 7 The Northeastern Conference crown finally fell into the Phantoms grasp when the final gun sound- ed. The offensive team again rolled up a massive score, giving Greenville a total of 274 points against 106 points of their opponents in 10 games. Sasfern 3-A Champs Congratulations are in order for the champs after final game. Sumrell, Fields, and Philips receive well-earned trophy, At long last, state recognition was earned by a well- coached and well-developed Phantom football squad. After downing Roxboro 13-0 Greenville led the San- ford eleven all the way, never giving them the op- portunity to take state honors from the hands of Phillip's Phants. The score as the final whistle blew was 15-13 with the two-point lead because of a blunder on the part of Sanford. The opposing quarterback stopped a 75-yard punt by Alan McArthur only to be pulled down in the end zone by .lack Foley and Russell Fields-those two points meant the game. It was a well-played game on the part of Green- ville with Wayne Sumrell, and Kroghie Andresen scoring the two touchdowns for the Ghosts. As ever, the line proved to be too strong and inflexible for the opponents. i l w l I Phillips relaxes . . . at last. 5 QU. fdoothall Squad Front row, left to right: john Flanagan, Billy Williamson, Bobby Jackson, Mitchell Jones, Chris Christopher, Pete Dixon. The Phantom team and their fans owe much to the Touchdown Club which arranged to have the play off games in Greenville and also gave unselfishly of their support during the regular season. By holding regular Weekly meetings with distinguished speakers, the group of local men raised high school football to a here-to-fore unknown height in Greenville. This year's club was led by Wiley Forbes, president, Carl Wade, program chairman, Carl Pierce, Secretary- treasurer, and Dr. Dan Wright, membership. 171 Wx X .... L, .- . X. The varsity succumbed to the Alum- ni 57-56. A last second attempt by the var- sity failed, thus giving the grads a well earned victory. 5He Nei Before Christmas the Phantoms fell to their strong non-conference foes from Rocky Mount and Wilson. The Blackbirds downed us 63-48 and 69-46 while -the less experienced Wilson Won by 65-60' and a real thriller by 61-59. Kenneth Allen shows form that helped advance Phantoms to State playoffs. Swishes Again Another close game was in store for the fans as Greenville conquered the Cardinals 70-69. The lead changed hands several times near the end but jacksonville couldn't stave off the home team attack. Towering Knowles lifts the ball from the grasp of three astonished Kinston defenders. Knowles shoots over a Rocky Mount defender while McArthur, Joyner, and Allen await the swish. m.-1- e srwsvnsrwsms: 71m w t r Q Kinston fell by the large margin of one point as the Phants continued their winn- ing ways. Our playing was still not.what Coach Bon was looking for, though. and again They're not doped. Half time saw the Greenies behind our dear friends from Washington, but the final stanza was a different story. It was the best work the players had done all year as they came from behind to win 74-58.
