In a short time we shall march down the aisle to receive our long awaited diplomas. Now the past four years will become memories. We entered high school as freshmen in September 1956. We were finally there! Clark Brewer, Brenda Harris, Ieanette Taylor, and Susan Willis lead our class that year. As sophomores we moved to the new junius H. Rose High School. The Moose Lodge was thescene of our sophomore dance, for which the theme of the French sidewalk cafes was used. The entire student body was invited to this event. Our class officers for that year were Buddy Murray, Charles Taft, Mary French Hawes, and Frances Cozart. We felt as our junior year approached that we had almost reached the top. Magazines were sold to help raise money for the junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. It was a successful sale. Another joyful event of our junior year was the receiving of our class rings. Our junior Class was headed by Billy Goodwin, Bill Clapp, jeanette Taylor, and Reggie johnson. Finally as we prepare to leave our Alma Mater with heartaches and joys behind us, those years will not be forgotten, but will remain with us forever: May we say to the next class that we hope their year will be just as successful as ours. The Greenies gave a forecast of things to come as they triumphed over Ahoskie. GREENVILLE 20 JACKSONVILLE 14 The phantoms won their second game of the season on a last second touchdown play. The Phantom defense had to hold off a second-half passing attack to win this thrilling game. GREENVILLE 6 WASHINGTON 19 Due to an epidemic of the flu in the Phantom squad, the regulars in this home- coming tilt had to be replaced. Even with the loss, the team gained much experience which would be invaluable in later con- tests. GREENVILLE 6 TARBORO 19 The Phantoms absorbed their second loss of the season at the hands of Tarboro. A very muddy field hampered the Green- ville attack. In the conference standings, however, the Phantoms were credited with a victory due to a forfeit. GREENVILLE 13 ELIZABETH CITY 0 After two losses in a row, the Phantoms bounced gack to win over the Yellow jackets. A great Greenie', defense held the jackets scoreless. Gacltle, Quard . . . GREENVILLE I3 NEW BERN 0 Finally back at full strength after the flu epidemic, the Phantoms continued their winning ways over a tough New Bern team. GREENVILLE 28 SCOTLAND NECK 0 The Greenies took full advantages of their superior speed to completely outclass the weak Scots, The Green defense chalked up their third straight shutout. GREENVILLE 9 WILSON I3 In the last home game of the season, the Phantoms took on the favored Cyclones. A last-quarter rally for victory by the Greenies was put down by the Wilson defense. GREENVILLE 27 ROANOKE RAPIDS 0 With the championship in sight, the Phantoms overpowered their hefty foes. This was the fourth time this season that the Phantoms had put down a foe without yielding a point. This is an honor to any defense. GREENVILLE 7 KINSTON 13 With the title hopes vanished, the Phantoms lacked the fire and spirit which was so evident in the earlier games. They were beaten for a season's record, includ- ing the forfeit, of seven wins and three losses. Without the forfeit, the Greenies had a six and four record. . girsf Down ' Qoal to 0 , in-.. Gfie Court Lacking experience, a young Phantom squad dropped three non-conference basketball games against AAAA teams. Two defeats were handed to the Phantoms by Wilson, while they suffered one by Rocky Mount. The Phantoms traveled to Washington, North Carolina, December 18, 1959, for their first con- ference encounter. The Phantoms played inspir- ing ball the first half, trailing by only two points. The team could not start rolling during the second half and were defeated by a sizable margin. On their home court, the Phantoms drew first blood in conference play when they defeated jacksonville by a score of 59-42. The Phantoms defeated Tarboro while still on the home court. The Creenies,' used the full-court press to their advantage in both of these games. 5rotters . When Roanoke Rapids invaded Greenville, the cards were changed. The Yellow Iackets overpowered the Phantoms by a wide margin. Still down from the defeat by Roanoke Rapids, Greenville lost again to Elizabeth City with a score of 45-42 in an overtime. The Phantoms were once more at home for an encounter with Kinston. A strong Kinston team came out on the long end of the rope with a 69-62 victory. The determined Phantoms then packed their suitcases and traveled to New Bern. The Phan- tom defense held New Bern to 49 points while a sharp-shooting Greenville team collected 68 points. Greenville hit 48 per cent for the floor. The Phantoms went from New Bern to Jack- sonville for a rematch. The Phantoms got the opening basket and lead the rest of the game. They won with a score of 50-44 and had 52 per cent accuracy from the floor. . 556 Mai Boys . . . Before the match . . .
