PIRE STATE - EL IRA KEY Empire Boys' State-First Row: Fremont Shepherd, George Peterson, and Dave Gilbert. Second Row: Ralph Alexander, Ed Wilson and Bob Shaw. Absent: Bruce Johnson. A look into the future with ideas of the possible places they might fill in our government were experi- enced by seven boys from Ithaca High selected last year to attend Empire Boys' State. Boys' State is spon- sored by the American Legion and the boys attending are selected by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and service. Service clubs of the Ithaca area sent our representatives to Colgate Univer- sity during the week of June 22 through June 29. There the boys learned how' our state government functions by setting up and running a government similar to that of New York State. George Peterson was elected Speaker of the State Assemblyg David Gilbert, county supervisor 5 Bruce Johnson, city treasurer, Fremont Shepherd, city police chief, and Bob Shaw, representa- tive to the Assembly. Besides their experience with government, the boys took part in different sports such as a baseball tournament and track meet, and in activi- ties such as talent shows, a band, and assemblies featuring speakers from the state government. Several of the bills passed in the Legislature of Boys' State were submitted to Governor Harriman for con- sideration. Elmira College Key: Elsie Lucarrelli. Elsie Lucarrelli was elected by the junior class as the outstanding girl to receive the Elmira College Key. The girls chosen in each large school in the state are automatically accepted in Elmira College and are invited to spend ,a Weekend at Elmira in November to become better acquainted with the college. 19
