S herron Jones THE ANNUAL Ithaca High School Frank R. Bliss, Principal Ithaca, New York Breaking away from set patterns and from the ordinary, the Annual Staff has tried to present a new and different yearbook. Life around us is constantly changingg the seniors will be going on to bigger and more difficult occupations, the underclassmen to a new school. In this time of change we must be able to adapt and to move with the times. Trying to look forward and to recognize the changes that have occurred is something that everyone must do. Yet there should always be some stabilizing agents and some traditions to carry along. With such thoughts in mind, we of the Annual Staff have created this book. The new ideas for layouts and presentation represent the change from years past. The modern symbol presented on the divider pages symbolizes the regulations that we must work around. We present to you, our readers, the 1959 ANNUAL and hope that you find it satisfying. 4 T BLE 0 CCJNTENTS Faculty ....... ..... 7 Seniors ..... .. ........ 17 Music ....... Any student-senior or underclassman-knows that when he enters the Guidance Office he is sure to receive a friendly welcome from Mrs. Fowler. For five years she has acted as manager of the outer office, supervising the work of as many as fifteen student helpers, and running interference for the busy members of the guidance staff. Her work is primarily secretarial, and in the course of one year she will type hundreds of college applications for graduating seniors, letters of recommendation, transcripts, forms and letters. Her special contribution to the morale of students of IHS, has been the encouragement she has given them over the years, the patience with which she has acted as a kind of in- formal counselor, hearing their troubles, taking a personal interest in their questions, and helping them find the bulletins and catalogues they need to make decisions regarding educational or vocational problems. If anyone deserves the heartfelt thanks of the Class of '59-and the appreciation of the entire student body it is Mrs. Fowler, and it is to her that we gratefully dedicate this issue of the Annual. An event-filled year was the record the 1959 Senior Class left behind when it graduated from Ithaca High School. A variety of money-raising projects were held so that the Class could finance its many activities. A Victory Hop was given after one of the football games, a variety show Review 120 was produced in conjunction with the Dramatics Club, and a Christmas Tree Sale was held in December. Many other Senior activities were carried on during the year. In February the Class sponsored the Miss IHS Contest with twelve senior contestants and Dan Gere as an able Master of Ceremonies. The Mr. IHS Contest and Senior Week were held during the last week in April, the Senior Ball on May 23 in the National Cash Register Auditorium, and the Senior Banquet on June 20. The climax was reached at Graduation when the Senior Class parted with memories of the strong ties Senior Year. that held together throughou ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1959 Caps and Gowns ,,,......i,.....,..... PIRE STATE - EL IRA KEY Empire Boys' State-First Row: Fremont Shepherd, George Peterson, and Dave Gilbert. Second Row: Ralph Alexander, Ed Wilson and Bob Shaw. Absent: Bruce Johnson. A look into the future with ideas of the possible places they might fill in our government were experi- enced by seven boys from Ithaca High selected last year to attend Empire Boys' State. Boys' State is spon- sored by the American Legion and the boys attending are selected by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and service. Service clubs of the Ithaca area sent our representatives to Colgate Univer- sity during the week of June 22 through June 29. There the boys learned how' our state government functions by setting up and running a government similar to that of New York State. George Peterson was elected Speaker of the State Assemblyg David Gilbert, county supervisor 5 Bruce Johnson, city treasurer, Fremont Shepherd, city police chief, and Bob Shaw, representa- tive to the Assembly. Besides their experience with government, the boys took part in different sports such as a baseball tournament and track meet, and in activi- ties such as talent shows, a band, and assemblies featuring speakers from the state government. ' The Little Red Marching Band has had a very busy school year. Aside from the regular appearances at all football games, the band participated in Cornell Band Day, the dedication of the U. S. Army Reserve, the Halloween and Veteran's Day parades, and a television performance for the United Fund Campaign. Highlight of the year was a three-day trip to Washington, D.C. to march in the Cherry Festival Parade. The band worked outside school hours practicing marching routines and sold candy, Christmas decorations, and magazine subscriptions to raise money for expenses. Mr. Battisti hopes that band trips will become a tradition in the future. This season's half-time shows included Bands of the Lands, giving the best routines from great college bands, I Got Rhythm, featuring a drum solo by Ken Shulman, and a show of American Firsts, with formations depicting a cornstalk and a quiz show genius. Another of Mr. Battisti's inspirations, Bert and Harry See the U.S.A., was a half-time favorite. One of the most popular novelty formations was the race between the aspirin and the Bufferin pills. 90 M f ie. 525 SJ' 1 X A. The Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Frank Battisti, should not be confused with Marching Band. After the football season, Mr. B. held auditions and chose from the keen com- petition the highest scorers for the Concert Band. Throughout the concert season, continual challenges, sectional rehearsals, and spot checks were scheduled to improve the quality of the work. The Band played for assembly programs and the Board of Education, and presented the Spring Con- cert in cooperation with the Senior Choir. The two groups collabororated for one number of the concert. It was a great honor for the Band to be requested to play in the Cherry Blossom Parade, held in Wash- ington, D.C. in April, and Marching Band and Concert Band joined forces to raise money for the trip. Such projects as the selling of candy, magazine subscriptions, the running of a bake sale, and the sponsoring of the Stereo Stomp late in February were arranged by hard working committees. As one of the most active and hardest working organizations in school, our Band was able to stimulate interest in good musicianship and to present high caliber music to the public. Thirty-four members of the IHS music organizations attended the Area All-State Conference at Cross Auditorium in Syracuse, Novem- ber 21-22. The musicians were not required to try out for this con- ference but were accepted on the basis of recommendations. During the conference the delegates prac- ticed for ten hours in preparation for the Orchestra, Choir, and Band Concerts. Top musicians of the state were chosen to participate in All-State held in Buffalo January 22-24. Maitland Dimock represented the IHS Senior Choir, Freemont Shep- herd, the Band, and Edwenna Rosser, Ronald Moore, and Alan Udall, the Orchestra. The Christmas season brought the first public appearance of the 1959 Ithaca High School Orchestra at the Christmas Concert of the Public School System. The Orchestra played the final part of How Orchestras Grow, performing Leroy Anderson's Sleighride, an-d accompanied the Senior Choir in The Heaven's Are Telling, from The Creation by Hayden. These performances indicated long hours of practice under the direction of Miss S. Carolyn Marsh. Members learned to play all kinds of music from the more popular type to the classics. Not only does this experience benefit the members, but through their concerts, they helped to raise the cultural level of the whole school. In the spring, the Orchestra departed from tradition, and performed in conjunction with the Junior Choir, the annual Spring Concert on April 17th. 95 SENIOR HORAL LUB SENIOR CHORAL CLUB-First Row: Claire Hernaez fTreasurerJ, Elsie Luccarelli fVice-Presidentj, Judy Shaw CSecretary-Librarianb, Edwenna Rosser, fAccompanistJ, and Barbara Peters CPresidentJ. Excellent pitch, good blending of voices, and the artistic selections chosen by Mr. Vido Mason, the director, made this year's performances mem- orable experiences for the Senior Choir, the Choral Club and the Glee Club. The singing showed the results of voice lessons taken this year, a new institution in the Vocal Music Department. At Christmas time the Choir took part in two concerts. One, in the evening, was a presentation by the vocal and instrumental students of the entire Public School system. Here the Choir sang The Heaven's Are Telling by J. S. Bach, accom- panied by the Ithaca High School Orchestra. The second, an assembly program, contained many outstanding numbers. On April 27 the Choir presented a portion of their spring concert over WIBC-TV. The spring concert was held May 6 with the Ithaca High School Band. The Last Words of David was a most moving number at this concert, Five Nursery Rhymes was novel, and Onward Ye Peoples, performed with the band, was a thrilling experience for the Choir. A trip was taken in May to sing at the Elmira Free Academy and at the Elmira South Side High School. The Club held a bake sale to finance the trip and to buy pins for Senior Club members. The reason for this was that the student body would be more truly represented in this way. Student Council again topped its goal of 951,000 in the United Fund. A total of 351,354.75 was collected in the first period classes. Ninety dollars went to our Greek war or- phan and the rest went to the county United Fund. The other very successful money drive was Dime Day on which S185 was netted for the Burke La Comb fund. This money was- spent to pay for the hospital bills incurred as a result of injuries suffered by Elmira Southside's football star. Dress-up Day was another inspiration of Student Council. The IHS students came to school dressed in their Sunday best and the experiment was considered a tremendous success. Student Council officers went to council con- ferences at Broome Tech and Cortland. In the spring Ithaca played host to the Southern Tier Association of ,Student Councils. This year's experiment in representation. from the first period classes was a success and satisfied the student body. In order to celebrate their success, Council members picnicked at Enfield at the end of the year. Anyone listening to these minutes? The School Savings Program, organized in 1954 for the purpose of promoting interest in thrift, began operation early in October. Every Tuesday morning through-out the year Bank Day was conducted. Sandy Bonney and Tom Jones stood in the BAFTHSO and gave to each homeroom banker one hundred 10-cent stamps for sale to students in his homeroom. At the close of the homeroom period, money and unsold stamps were returned to the school bankers who deposited the proceeds at the Ithaca Savings Bank. When a student's purchases totaled 85.00, he could go to the bank and open a new account or have the amount credited to his old account. 103 More money ? .IU IOR C ASS m JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS-First Row: Evie Hall fTreasurer3, Ed Knaysi fPresidentj, Eloise Knight iSecretaryJ, and J. Getting ready for the assembly. Rounding up their members with a membership drive in the fall, and another in the spring, a good- sized Junior Class carried out an active program and worked up good class spirit. Their two main events. for the year were the Junior Class Assembly and the Junior Prom. The Assembly, titled Eloise in New York with Barbara Darling as Eloise, was held March 12. A featured tricycle act brought down the house. In April, devotees of the dance from the whole school enjoyed the exotic music and decorations which followed the theme Blues in the Night. The Club sold stationery to finance their projects. 104 SOPHOMCRE C ASS SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS-First Row: Dr. Zien fAdvisorJ, Janet O'Brien lSecretaryJ, Peter Houghton fPresidentJ, Ann Mosher fVice-Presidentj, Bob Reynolds fTreasurerJ, and Mrs. Weeks fAdvisorD. Approx- imately every three weeks the cycle was completed - rush- ing material to the printers, making up the dummy paper, reading galley proofs and page proof, and the final glorious flurry of circulation. Three of the twelve fun-packed issues were produced without the invaluable assistance of Miss Marian Elliott, adviser, among them the Miss IHS issue. The Tattler's most important scoop was kept secret even from Miss IHS committee chairmen, but not without a struggle. While the editors were pounding out the lead story, poker-faced innocents attempted to use the typewriter for WIHS an- nouncements. The machine was carried out to the stairs for their benefit. For the first year, the Tattler shared its lair With four classes. Herr Teetor had no little difficulty teach- ing German to the thirty sardines crammed into 202. His plight was not eased by lone editors climbing over three rows of students to reach the Tattler desks for copy. April Fool! was the slogan April 10, flate, but still funnyj, as the one completely ridiculous Tattler was de- livered to the 600 subscribers. The issue was a thorough satire on the particulars within the paper: Wilfred Rand- alls' photographs, the periodical new school progress re- port, the intricate write-ups of fairly simple stories, CBut we need the copyll, the editorials that tried so hard to influence public opinion, the humorous tidbits called Itha- capers, the cartoons, Legislative and Congress debates, fso rare that they had to be coveredl . . . Hard Work and meeting deadlines is the main memory of the Annual Staff. This is always foremost when a yearbook goes to press, but other memories will emerge when the pressure is over. The Staff started planning in the spring of 1958 for this year's book. Several meetings in the summer Were concerned with picking the photograph for the color liner. Then there were tense weeks when it rained so often that everyone, including the photogra- pher, Wondered if the July 15 deadline for this picture could be met. But some sunny days did come and the color liner was sent off. Early in September the Staff chose the theme Change Sixteen pages of advertising Went in for the September 15 deadline, and sixteen for November 1. Pix were taken in Room 402 after school. The working periods for the staff Were 6th period and after school when they created new layouts, wrote copy, typed, and ran around the school identifying pictures. The high light of the year for Allied Youth was the national AY Conference held in Buck Hill Falls on November 13-16. The theme for discussion this year was Teenagers Inquire About Alcohol. This discussion was carried on in committees and general conversations. While at the conference, Miss Emily Brown received an award of recognition for her ten years of service as an Allied Youth sponsor. Programs for the year included two speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous and two bake sales. The membership drive in the fall was publicized by the teepee constructed over the BAFTHSO. Operators' Club, under the direction of Mr. C. R. Dixon, continued to perform its valuable services for high school classes. The operators were in charge of the school's audio-visual aids program. Each day, members of the club delivered teachers' orders for films, projectors, and phonographs. Giving up their study halls, these boys ran the equipment when it Was needed. With the increasing emphasis on better education in America, IHS plays its part by recognizing scholastically outstanding students in the National Honor Society. Along with scholarship, an Honor Society member must have leadership, loyalty, and service. Edwenna Rosser, George Peterson, Ed Wilson, and Bob Shaw spoke on these four qualities at the fall induction assembly when twenty seniors joined the Society. At the meeting of this organization, members had the opportunity to hear a series of informative lectures. Dr. Carl Gartlein spoke to NHS in Decem- ber on the International Geophysical Year and the activities in Antarctica. Dr. Gartlein illustrated his talks with slides. In February, Professor Kenneth Evett spoke to NHS on modern art. In order to give his listeners a better concept of modern art, Professor Evett gave a demonstration on canvas and showed several of his works done in ink. Later in the year Mr. Benson of Ithaca College gave a talk on jazz. At the spring induction, Professor Clinton Rossiter was the featured speaker. The goal of NHS this year was to be more than an Honor Society. The organization strove to become an active club, contributing something to school life. It reached this goal by opening its lectures to to the school. In order to raise money for pins and for the annual banquet, NHS held a very successful car Wash in March. That's Sharon Parr trying to bring Parliamentary procedure into Legislative. Starting off with the initiation of new members in the fall, each new mem ber of Legislative had to wear the same clothes for a week. In the spring the initiates had to getthe signatures of all of the members on a hard-boiled egg. The-grocery stores in Ithaca were surprised at the sudden demand for extra large eggs at this time. The dance, held November 8, found guests entering a large Showboat -the theme for the dan-ce. With a large mural of a showboat as well as decorations on the dance floor creating this illusion, the dancers could almost hear the sound of water flowing and feel the floor moving as if they were on board ship. However, one should not think that all was frivolity in Legislative in 1959. They had many serious moments including several debates on ad- vertising, foreign aid, and price supports. Run-off debates picked a team of four for the Congress- Legislative Debate held March 26. During the spring vacation Senior members took a trip to New York. When the club found that the treasury was not as large as they had thought, they held bake and rummage sales to balance the budget. Other special events were a Christmas party held at the Vice-President's house and a banquet at the end of the year when the new officers were inducted.. A dab here, a dab there. Congress began the year by initiating twenty- two new members at a banquet at the Clinton House. With the Congressional seats filled, the group convened and began a series of debates. In November, Congressmen began thinking about two things: raising money by shoveling snow and preparing for the Congress-Legislative debate. Con- sequently the city was invaded by red-jacketed Congressmen armed with snow shovels. Elimination debates and some practice produced a team of Dave Conkle, George Peterson, Bob Rideout, and Bob Shaw who spoke in the assembly debate against Legislative. ' To enliven the school life, the club sponsored the Congressional Ball, Hearts Are Wild, on Valen- tine's Day. Later in the year the Congress-Faculty basketball game was held. Mr. Mack gave a very interesting lecture on oil painting. Field trips to the White Art Museum and the Corning Glass Works proved very inspiring. After meeting, the members used the facilities of the art room to experiment with oils, water- colors, enameling, and clay modeling. The Club members attended Farm and Home Week. They also had a laboratory meeting where they dissected a beef heart and a cat. Altogether it was a busy and profitable year for the Biology Club. Science Club members were a diversified lot, who provided many of their own bi-weekly programs, including a series on space technology, this year, On occasion, the group was fortunate enough to have a speaker from Cornell. Activities of the club were not limited to listening to speakers. Future scientists themselves, members worked on their own projects, many of which were entered in the annual science fair sponsored by the club. Also featured were the Club's own l Miss Monitor and the Abominable Snowman. By presenting programs based on life in IHS, Radio Club has rendered a public service by enabling And now for our on-the-spot interview with the community to learn about what goes on in IHS the Abominable Snowman in the Himalayas! and to feel the pulse of the younger generation. CHEERLE 128 DERS No matter what the Weather or the score, the spunky Varsity Cheerleaders did their best to encourage the Football and Basket- ball teams to victory. The girls supervised the transportation to the away football and basketball games in cooperation with the Pep Club. In order to raise money to pur- chase new uniforms for the basketball sea- son, the squad held a dance after one of the football games. The weekly hours of practice in the basement halls of the school paid off when the girls took part in the CYO Invitational Cheer1eader's Tournament at Rochester on March 7. Here the squad presented three cheers and were judged on appearance, presentation, and originality. The ideas gotten at this tournament will help to improve next year's squad. A look behind the athletic scene for 1958-59 showed a great deal of planning and organizing on the part of the faculty members and students who make up the Athletic Council. They planned the school's athletic policy and arranged schedules for meets and gamesas well as transportation for the teams. The Council was in charge of awarding letters to the football, basketball, and Wrestling squads, and the Marching Band in a January as- sembly. In a spring assembly, awards were made to students participating in the spring sports. The Athletic Council also provided for the outfitting of the squads. 130 VARSITY FOOTB LL First Row: Art Adams, Dave Wallace, Brad Jones, Ed Michaels, Co-captain Joe Spano, Co-captain Carmine DiGiacomo, Bill Munsey, Pete Velletri, Don Campbell, and Sam Worthen. Ithaca's only other defeat was a 20-14 heartbreaker to Binghamton Central. The powerful Little Red single-wing attack led by Co- captains Carmine DiGiacomo and Joe Spano gained six victories for an overall record of 6-2. Coach Joe Moresco's boys triumphed over Elmira Free Academy, Union Endicott, Elmira Southside, Binghamton North, Vestal, and non-league Auburn. The Ithaca High cross-country squad showed great improvement this past season and achieved fair success. Junior Robin Williams' first place finish in the Sectionals and his subsequent twelfth place showing in State Championships highlighted the season. Williams' victory gave II-IS its first Section 4 winners. He also gained revenge over favored Billet of Vestal and Brown of U-E who had beaten him earlier. Led by Co-Captains Williams and Al Simons, the young IHS squad lost a pair of closely contested dual meets to Union-Endicott, 26-39, and to the always-powerful Vestal, 24-31. In a large field at the Vestal Internationals, Coach Kasimer Hipolit's team did well, taking third be- hind Williamsport and Vestal. The Little Red Harriers looked good at the Cincinnatus Invitationals with a third place standing. At the Sectionals, Ithaca was again third, behind U-E and Vestals on the hilly Vestal course. Coach Hipolit, pleased with the team's development, in spite of not having as many team members as most schools, looks forward to great things next year. The track team, guided by Coach Kasimer Hipolit, has had another good year. Three boys, Arthur Adams, York Mayo, and George Peterson, returned from last year's Sectional champion team as Tri-Captains. Although strong in the track events, the Little Red was a bit hard pressed in the field events. Top dashman was Peterson. Sectional champ Mayo as well as Adams and Francis Schlater were tops in the 440, while James Sheehan, Alan Simons, and Robin Williams took part in the dis- tance events. Hurdlers included Arthur Smith and Joseph Stone. Adams, also a high jumper, and Jan Larimer, a pole-vaulter, were point-makers in the field events. The Sectionals were held at Ithaca this year, and, to climax the season, the New York State Track and Field Championships were also held here. The latter was a great spectator event. Fourth Row: Dave Smith, Sam Worthen, Dan Evett, York Mayo, Carmine DiGiacomo, Steve Devener, and Dick Barron. Lettermen's Club's primary purpose is to give recognition to the boys who received Ithaca High letters in any sport. Headed by President John Stone, the club gave Lettermen's sweaters to eligible club members. These sweaters were proudly displayed every Friday night. Club members also sold tickets for all the home football games, receiving ten percent of the total gate receipts or about S60 a game. During the wrestling season Lettermen's Club sponsored a coat check and sold candy bars at all of the home meets. Miss IHS-1959 was crowned at their annual dance during the basketball season. The activity of the Lettermen most familiar to all was ushering at all assemblies. In order to get into the high school gym on Tuesday or Friday nights-this year one needed a rifle, or an interest in one, for these were the nights of the Rifle Team practice. Don Egan, one of the IHS's highest scorers, led the group as 'both president of the club and captain of the team. The team itself is made up of a mini- mum of seven of the best members of the club, and in order to make the varsity status it is necessary to score 335 points out of 400. The team had a 14-match schedule this year which was climaxed with the sectionals in March. RIFLE TEAM-First Row: John Hoare, Don Egan fCaptainJ, John Fabbricatore QManagerJ, and Bob Schultz. With the promise of a pool in the new school as an incentive, IHS swimmers returned to the high school sports scene for the second year, after several years of dormancy. The swimmers began daily workouts in October in order to be in shape for the Colgate Relays and the first meet with Binghamton Central. Competition with more experienced teams from schools such as Central proved a little discouraging, but Coach David Epstein is very optimistic about the team's future. The IHS Golf Team played a ten-match schedule this year: five at home and five on the road. Team members had access to the Ithaca Country Club for practice. All team members participated in theintramurak practicefheld in the high school gym during the second term. When spring arrived, the team attended the golf clinic held at the Ithaca Municipal Course and improved their games. Something new for this year's team was the purchase of the new golf uniforms. These shirts have golf clubs and Ithaca printed on the front. GOLF TEAM - First Row: Tony Mignano, Jim Johnston, and John Pete.
