3111 mvmuriam 1oHN WYCKOFF SWARTHOUT. IR. We of Ithaca High School were saddened by the news that Jack Swarthout an outstanding member of the senior class, died March 10, 1946. 5 Jack was a leader at Ithaca High. He participated actively in the German, Latin, and Math clubs, but his greatest interests were in the fields of science and music. He served not only as president and vice-president of the Science Club, but also as the assistant in the science laboratories during the last two years. He was president of the orchestra and a member of the band. Besides his ability in leadership, Jack possessed the qualities of an outstanding scholar. His desire to do everything well is exemplified by his straight average throughout his high school years. Further, he had a winning personality and a deep interest in others Which attracted many friends during his two-and-one-half years in Ithaca. As one of -Iack,s friends very aptly stated when he heard of his death, "Jack has but passed another test."

sf ilu fllivmnrizxm Mr. Royal Gilkey On April 14 of this year, We were shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Royal Gilkey, who gave twenty-three years of conscientious service to the Ithaca High School. He showed always a sincere desire to do right, and, by his many long hours of untiring service, indi-- cated his intense interest in students, in their activities, and in their education. The student body, the faculty, and par- ticularly the science department of the Ithaca High School will long miss this kindly man, of Whom it can be truly said, "He was a gentleman? Zin vmnriam Miss Catherine Welch All this year, we have been conscious of the empty space left by the death of Miss Welch, one of our finest teachers and foremost personalities. Although in poor health for several years, she gave unstintingly of her time, her skill, her knowledge, and her personality to classes in French and Spanish, as well as to the Spanish Club, of which she was the faculty advisor and guiding spirit. Dry humor, infallible tact, and a wide, rich background of culture and travel gave added depth and interest to her teaching, not only because of the wealth of interest- ing side-lights which She had always at her command, but also because of the fascinating and charming personality which were impressed on every student who came into her classroom. i 3
