This was the most exciting rally that took place this year. The students, faculty and families en¬ tered the gym and filled the bleachers. Every¬ body enjoyed themselves as they watched the Cheerleaders, Song Girls, Lettergirls, and Major¬ ettes perform. The boys that performed in this rally were members of the Boys Block I. These boys were very convincing and amusing in their roles. Thank you Block I for the exciting lunch time entertainment. Homecoming Rally The 1976-1977 Homecoming Rally was full of excitement, spirit, and a student-body full of enthusiasm. November 12, 1976’s Rally began with a hoedown from the Freshman class. Following the Hillbillies, were the All-American Sportsmen, dis¬ playing their spirit for sports, their class of 80 and their school. Space was the theme for the class of 1978, when they performed their skit of the , “Future Box. “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” to see Oz was the Seniors’ theme. Their effort, enthusiasm, and all-around perfor¬ mance led them to their first place victory. Following them were Ju¬ niors, Sophomores, and then Fresh¬ men. That night at the game, was the crowning of the Spirit Queen. Che¬ ryl Bliss had the honor of crowning Shari Butler as 1976-1 977’s Home¬ coming Queen. Shari’s court in¬ cluded Tina Cunningham, Terryl Machado, and Penny Bradberry. Homecoming Rally ASTD HER COURT Spirit Week Seniors Spirit Week is a five day competition between the four classes before our homecoming. Each class has a theme which is to be carried out through their decora¬ tions and costumes. The classes spend hours decora¬ ting the halls and courtyard for the judging. They also accumulate points on their rally skit and rally spirit. This year the Senior class took first place. Their theme was the Wizard of Oz. 52 Juniors The Junior class came in a close second. Their theme of “Space was very imaginative and well executed. Sophomores The Sophomore class of 1979 came in third place behind the Juniors and Seniors in Spirit Week activities. Their theme was “All-American Sports Spectacular.” Freshmen The Freshman class of 1 980 chose “Hillbillies” as their theme for Spirit Week competition. They came in fourth place. 55 Dances Now where did she go? There were many informal dances this year. These dances were the highlight of Irvington High School. Blue Mist There’s room for more! If you want someone’s attention, whisper. Get Dancin ' The Fifth Annual Blue Mist Dance is a semi- formal dance, which is generally held around Christmas time. Gloria Navratil, this year’s A.S.B. elections commissioner, was in charge of putting to¬ gether the convention. This hilarious story revolves around the mildly insane antics of the Sycamore family. These range from Grandpa’s snake collecting to Essie ' s candy making between ballet steps. Then there are the Kirbys, an extremely conservative and proper family. Alice Syca¬ more (the only normal member of the family) is in love with Tony Kirby. This is where the conflict of the play arises. How can these two sweethearts, from oppo¬ site families, get together? One way was to invite the Kirbys over for dinner. The Kirbys were very shocked to find such a crazy atmosphere, and therefore came to the conclusion that marriage was totally out of the question. At the end. Grandpa Sycamore finally convinces Tony ' s father that life means more than slaving on Wall Street for money. For the first time in the last three years they finished with a winning record of five wins, two ties and three losses. The main asset of the team has been a “to¬ getherness” and dedication to the job at hand. Although the of¬ fense did sputter at times, it proved able to put points on the board when they were really needed. Defensively, the Vikings were nothing short of outstanding, giving an average of less than ten points per game to all opponents. Coach Miller said that this team was a pleasure to coach and that this year’s se¬ niors were a group that he will always remember for their hu¬ mor as well as their ability to play football. This year’s Frosh-Soph B Team is looking toward an ex¬ citing and successful season. With the addition of four to five swimmers from the varsity squad this will pro¬ vide the depth that the “B” Team will need this year. These experienced, outstanding swimmers will man ev¬ ery position on the “B” team. Ill I - ! -5 i 2 i - i ! I 2 This year’s Varsity Baseball team was a well-balanced squad. Practice games early in the season indicated strong hitting. Three solid pitchers and many skilled positions. Seniors Gary Conde and Jim Neraumont led the outfield, while Mike Huk anchored an excellent infield. Seniors Ben Snyder and Kevin Brown with Junior Ariel Flores provided the Viking Team with good pitching. The team this year had excellent potential. Back The 1976 Viking squad was made up of two seniors, twelve sophomores and three freshmen. The frosh-soph team had some very outstanding performers. Even though being only a sophomore. Rich Moraida was the number one man on the team. Mike Galvin, a sophomore, was also one of the top competitors. Jimmy Pena and Charles Adgie, two freshmen, did an outstanding job, throughout the season. Carlos Servantes and Rodger Adams were the two seniors on the varsity squad. They did a good job throughout the season. It was unfortunate they did not have more upperclassmen running with them. Each meet three sophomores would run with the varsity. In the MVAL finals the frosh-soph placed fourth to qualify for the NCS division meet. 114 Golf... Golf... Golf... Golf The Viking Golf team was very strong in 1 977. At the time of the writing of this article the team had lost only one match. The team was considered one of the favorites for the league championship. The team was led by the best golfer in the M.V.A.L. as a junior, Jamie Hay, who captured the individual champion¬ ship in 1976. Four of the top six golfers will return next year insuring the Vi¬ kings of another good team. Pictured: Back Row, Steve McLure, Brett Yuhas, Steve Stevens, Mike Madson, Tim Harper, Greg Wayne. Our language department estimated that there were 1 700 students attending. 131 Administration Administration Administration Administration Administration 133 The theme of this Yearbook tells Irvington students that they are the “music”. We are reminded in musical terms of the harmony, spirit and rhythm of school life at Irvington High. Students are also told that, after a growing process, they will soon be writing “lyrics to their own “tune”. The Irvington staff has done its very best to provide a setting for students where they enjoy school life, learn academic skills and grow toward independence. We take pride in the harmony, rhythm and spirit of Irvington students, and we feel that our graduates are well prepared for post high school life. Soon, our graduates will have the exciting opportunity of applying the principles of harmony, rhythm, learning and growing to a new job or school situation. We expect them to enter into this new situation with pride and confidence knowing that their Irvington background provided them with the skills to find success. They are still the music, only the tunes will change.; Mr. Gercich, Principal 134 Ad ministration Pictured clockwise from top left: Ms. Deborah Weinberg, Asst. Career opportunities, aptitudes and abilities are carefully analyzed and discussed with the student so that the best choices can be made. Communication and problem solving are the main techniques used to help the student identify his or her values, needs, ideals and goals. Well, forget it! I want to thank all the talented people that signed up for this year’s staff. You’ve all done a terrific job. Especially Miles D. Mendenhall, my right hand man and Carlos Servantes, my photographer. Denise Torres, the creative one on the staff, you wrote a beautiful theme. Mrs. Anderson, is our account number 533? Dear Michele, this sounds exactly like your page. I wanted to save the most important person for last, Mr. Franco. I dedicate this yearbook to you.
