HE 1928 OWL assumes for its mission the privilege of preserv- ing within its pages those records of the past year which we believe, in the days of restrospection to come, will serve as pleasant memories and will call for the precious reminiscences of days gone by. VVe have tried to weave into the pages of this annual the spirit of good fellowship of I. H. S. However, now that our task is ended we realize the futility of attempting to transcribe such a precious and in- tangible thing upon a mere printed page. However we feel somewhat satisfied, justly we hope, that a certain degree of success has been attained in chronicling and presenting a representative cross section of our high school life. And so in giving you The Owl of 1928 we hope that it may be a reminder of our work and play together. THE EDITOR. Four A. F. HIXSON DEDICATION iD? ln clecliczttingg these pages of the yeur's history, The Owl has chosen to hestow this signal honor on one to whom lronton Hi School is largely inclehtecl for its present growth and the vision of Il still greater institution. Through his untiring efforts :incl inspiring' devotion he has proven himself :L generous frienfl of the Faculty, a helovecl coinrztcle of his ,-Xlumni, :incl :L truly nohle and eloquent icleal ot the unclergracluate horlv. He has given us 11 clistinguishecl example of those rare qualities of executive zthility, self-iorgettul service, and quiet efficiency, which have won for hiin :1 place in the hearts of all lronton Hi School. Four of the most carefree years of our lives are coming to a close. We realize that we are about to graduate-that our High School days will be but past mem- ories-rnemories that will remain with us forever. In 1922, we, thinking ourselves quite grown-up, entered the New High School Building, along with the upper classmen. Awed by the large building, and the ring- ing of bells every so often we finally adapted ourselves to our surroundings. For two years we went along, getting our lessons, but getting no publicity at all, because we couldn't understand what it was all about. 1925-Freshmen! At last we were given the privilege of organizing. We elected Kenneth Koeper as President and also chose our class colors, motto, and flower. A few of our girls won a place on the Tigerette Basketball Team and our social calendar was made up of one party which we made a wonderful success. 1926-Back as Sophomores, we organized early this year choosing Orland Jordan as President. This year we were again allowed one party which we put over so big, that we gained equal footing with our upper classmen. 1927-We again launched ourselves in the sea of social and class duties. Feeling more important as Juniors we elected Lois Rutledge to guide our ship to a worthy harbor, which she did, putting us to work at once raising money for our Junior-Senior Prom. Our junior play, Green Stockings, proved quite a knock out and we succeeded in raising the necessary amount to give our departing Seniors a pleasant memory of their last days with us. This year passed far too quickly and we found ourselves looking forward to our next and last at Ironton High. 1928-Seniors! Again we choose Lois Rutledge as our President, and Miss Kouns as Advisor. We give to Lois, our deepest and sincere appreciation for the way she has led usg also to Miss Kouns who has been more than a successful advisor-our best friend. Under their leadership we have succeeded in all our at- tempts. This year we were honored with some new students who joined the ranks and started marching with us toward our goal. Our boys have made startling records in Athletics and our girls have excelled in debating and inter-class basket- ball. We have given sevral parties this year each one better than the last. The year is nearly over, one of our greatest achievements has almost been at- tained. We think of it as the end, but in reality it is only the beginning. Out of the 222 Seventh Graders there are only 104 left, co-operating always, and emerging victorious. We have the honor of being the first class to graduate, after completing junior and Senior High in the new building. We are sincere in our belief that the happiest days of our lives were spent within the walls of Old I. H. S. -Elizabeth Griffith '28. Thirty-six PRGPHESY ill? This, my story, is hard to believe, But far bc it from me to CUCI' lll'l'L'l'Z't',' While I tell it to you please take careful lived 'Tis a marvelous tale in both 'word and docd. Ironton, Ohio, April 28th, 1935 Prof. Patrick Abraham Gump I-Iintermeister, Somewhere in Africa, My dear Classmate: just a line to tell you of plans for a great reunion of the members of the Iron- ton High School Class ofl928, to be held on the evening of June 14, in the school gymnasium. I realize that you have strayed far from the scenes of our childhood days but I hope you will grant yourself a vacation and arrange to be on hand. Yours very sincerely, LUIS RUTLEDGE, Chairman Get-to-gether Committee. P. S.-If you can locate Mildred Boggess and Alice Andrews try to bring them along. Their address is not known but they were last seen headed that way. Seated, or if you prefer, lying on a steamer chair I re-read these words that had started me on a journey across half the earth's surface. The message had been delivered to me by my head man, Glenn Stevenson, at our camp near Ports- mouth, a village in the wilds of Africa. We were nearing the end of a four year hunt for tail feathers of the now extinct goofer horse, wanted by the Smithsonian Institution. I immediately resigned my position and caught the mail boat the fol- lowing day bound for a large city up the coast. Here I found the Misses Andrews and Boggess at their work. This very devout and pious pair volunteered for foreign missionary service soon after graduation and have done noble work in Bur- ma, Hindustan, and Africa. They decided to make the trip and that afternoon we boarded the good ship VOLST EAD, headed by the faithful Stevenson and the baggage, Imust not forget to mention another addition to our party, Wallace Pelfrey, who left a good position as cabin boy on the mail boat at my urgent request. We landed in New York and with the exception of John Turley, whom I en- countered while visiting the stock exchange, I saw no friends until I reached Colum- bus. While here I looked up Oscar Destocki, who has a responsible position on the Daily Barker. He delivers all papers on route number four. George Mittendorf Thirty-.reven also works for this firm. He is Editor-in-Chief. Cn my way down High Street, I saw a sign which read, See Stewart for Shines. I entered, and after a brief session with Elza, came out with my number twelves shining like new pennies. At At the depot I bought a film magazine from Mary Southworth, who represents the Union News Company there. Yes, she is still crazy Cover dark and light men.j While trying to kid Mary I was startled by a familiar voice bellowing, Train for Portsmouth, Haverhill, Hanging Rock, Ironton, and all points east-All ABOARDH. I rushed over and grabbed the hand of Dick Mitchell who told me very confidentially that he was the best little howler for his size on the system. I grabbed the rear coach of the train on the fly and settled down to enjoy the pictures in my magazine. The first pictures, to my surprise, were those of Stumpy Henry and Spoof Lawson who have just released their third big success called, My Sugar Daddy. VV e were stopped by a red board near Haverhill. A sign nearby informed me that the surrounding land belonged to Ault, Boynton, and Dowling, who specialized in the cultivation of rhubarb and marrowfat beans. I later learned that Howard Gunnoe had withdrawn from the partnership and had gone into artichokes on a large scale after being led into the wilds of matrimony by Rose Dillow. The train again stopped and I was in Ironton, which I found to be the same lively city as of old. The next few days were quite uneventful, although I did attend a big double wedding. It was an impressive moment when the two grooms CRoy Beals and Glendon Feilj advancd to meet the very determined brides fPauline Gibson and Virginia Crancej before the altar where the fatal knot was tied by the Reverend Robert Hudson. During the ceremony Frances Hall, a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, sang very tenderly, I love you truly, and VVoman stay thy Hand. The following evening I attended the grand re-union. I had decided to gain all the information possible concerning the occupations and where-abouts of my classmates and after a very enjoyable period of dancing, eating, and dancing, I pos- sessed the following notes: Robert Bartram is entering the sixth year of his four year course at State, de- termined to stay eligible for football. Tom and Rosemary finally agreed to disagree and are living very scrappily at the bride's home. Elsy Rutledge is as yet unmarried but is considering a very attractive proposal. Lawrence Baker spends most of his evenings at South Point. Paul Patterson still sports those cunning dimples. Marion Ault is running a snake farm in South America. Helen Lane is still hopeful. Don Freed doesn't find it necessary to go to Portsmouth any more. He brought her to Ironton. Ann Stewart still drives the Pony Express. It now requires two mechanics in constant attendance. Dick Hutsinpillar and Judson Howell serve in this capacity. Paul Lambert has grown into a real bad man. Rose Broerman acquired a street car conductor. Elizabeth and Laura Baker run a hot dog stand on south Ninth Street. Chester Cardwell has a very good position at Columbus as a guest of the Governor. His well known ability as a bigamist secured for him the appointment Thirty-eight gg KW? 1 '1 aura. 'MYHY' Q-Vw in JAJV 'nas ' S i 2 . ' N-QV .- . 5 e . ' . f 0 1' - I ' V' 'nf' r ,f' 'ill' 'Q-.MQ . He now weighs 309. Dorothy Gannon had to wait until the class of '30 graduated but she got her man in spite of the competition of Mary Dean. Alma Howard is head of all the elevator girls in the city. Roberta Karreman and Jane Mason cheated some deserving young men by going in for careers in art and literature. Bill Mascari is a furnace tender in a li-ttle southern town called Hades. Brim- stone is used for fuel there. Carl Mahl has grown thin from hard study at Notre Dame. Thirty-nine v5,.pfg,.r,f,....a. ,g4s , . ,..,w.-. , - - 5. -- A 1 Y A i t Ns f ' ' . . rs- ' . - , ' -. Eben Moore is heavyweight wrestling champion of Europe. jean Moore is National President of the Girl Reserves. Herbert Mooney is the lucky candidate for the hand of our May Queen, Clara Sherburne. Albert Hall is a sour old bachelor. He and Calvin Hankins are now prohibi- tion officers. Their most recent arrests were Virginia Sturgill, Ruth Shafer, and Kathleen Payne but the trio was released for lack of evidence. Helen Holderby will of course, get married when the Rutledges do. It canit be long now. Gherling's new thrill is not known but the amount of grease on his hair gives promise of great wealth. Eva Morgan is learning to be a plumber. Alice Murray is our only woman senator but we have two very successful lady detectives, namely: Mary Gentil and Doris Parker. Dorothy Miller's great breach of promise suit was a financial success. She was awarded a million for heart balm. Thelma Schroeder is playing left end for Flo Zeigfield. Beulah Dalton is as great a mystery as ever. Geraldine Waller and Ethel Willis have not been seen in town since the last Fourth of July. Thelma Stewart is staring with Ringling Brothers. She is billed as the World's Foremost Woman Clown. Wilma Tobart, in spite of her advanced age, still loves to dance. Edna Wells and Ruth Williams, the famous tennis double team, is touring France. They are capably managed by Darline Weaver. Last but not least, comes Elizabeth Griffith and her rise to fame. For several years she was known for her ability in eating spagetti, via the air route but recently she smashed all records and brought herself honor and fame by making a bowl in one at a tournament in San Francisco. This goes to prove that you can't keep a good man for womanj down. Depending solely upon my fleetness of foot and the benevolence of my class- mates I do plead guilty to this prophesy and do hereby submit it for inspection. -RUSSELL HEWITT '28 are F arty , if 4, 'gg 1 1' aipfffbs: . FRESHMEN The green leaves still hung on the trees when the equally green Freshmen Qthe Sophs declarej came to Ironton High School as real High Schoolersf' CPause for tears of joy.j Among much weeping and separating of friends the nine months sentence started. SCENE II. ELECTION DAYS The old soap box was dragged out and campaign speeches started. After a friendly battle Wilbur Rappie Rapp won the place of honbr, Freshmen Presi- dentg johnie McAfee, Vice-Presidentg jean Blickle, Secretaryg Dorothy Green Treasurer: Miss Davidson kept the thrilled Frosh in order as Class advisor and was duly decorated with Green and Gold, Frosh Class Colors. SCENE IH. FOOTBALL October came, bringing football and Freshmen heroes. Wilbur Rapp made 'Varsity as a President should do. johnie McAfee, class sheik, made guard and loyal Fresh turned out to see football bring glories to old Ironton High. There were other Freshmen full of promise out as subs too. Resolution fpassed unani- mously by the classj to beat Portsmouth as long as Class of 'Sl remains in I. H. S. SCENE IV. A PARTY Great gaiety and many hearts are happy. What is it? VV hat could it be but the Freshmen Party-Valentine's Day. The Heroine shone as the Belle of the Ball and all Freshmen agreed that they had the best party, class and Advisor in history. SCENE V. BASKET BALL If winter comes can basket ball be far behind? Of course not and again the Class of '31 took its place. Rappie and Johnnie made 'Varsity. Johnnie Venz starred on the Class team and before their fire fell alike Directors and Sophomores, even though they did not finish first. A girl's team fought hard, too, and another season shall win. SCENE VI. SPRI NG Does anyone know a dose for Spring Fever? Certainly-Track. Maybe the Fresh didn't win the Meet but they gave all they had and some day the Class of '31 will take its rightful place. ln the meantime the Fresh are not dismayed! ' SCENE VII. SENIOR COMMENCEMENT The Freshmen look with envy while those great and marvelous personages, The Seniors, bask in Freshmen adoration. Meanwhile we study and admit with a wink of an oedematous eyelid that we have physic seizure or rather a subliminal visitation, that the intellectuallity of '31 will surpass even the vdst. intellegentsia of the present Senior Class on some eventual date. The Tigers played one of the hardest schedules of any football team and suffered only one defeat. Starting the season with a victory from New Boston fGlenWood Highj the Orange and Black won a hard fought victory. Q6-Oj. Later they had to forfeit this game because they had unknowingly played an ineligible man. After a week of grilling practice preparing for the strong Dayton Stivers the Tigers again faced a hard fought battle. Taking matters in their own hands in the last half of play, Ironton High scored a touchdown, which tied the score and won state wide recognition for the Tigers C12-l2j. Battered, bruised, and sore from the glorious Dayton game, the Tigers stacked odds against the strong Jackson team. Neither team being able to score, they see- sawed back and forth for four hard fought quarters, until the whistle blew and the game ended with a O-0 score. Pushing defeat in the back ground and grasping the hand of victory the scrappy Orange and Black team won a glorious victory in the last half of play from the strong Aquinas eleven of Columbus Q12-71. Fighting, passing, bucking and plunging the Ironton Tigers again turned the tables and unloosened their unexhaustable strength to win a glorious and thrilling victory from Athens. Threatening Ironton repeatedly in the last few minutes of play, Athens lacked the punch to carry the ball over the chalk line. The Tigers added another victory to their string C6-OJ. Falling short and not making any points in the first half of play the Tigers gave vent to their rage in the second half and staged a comeback which brought them another victory and they defeated Wellston by a large margin Q32-OD. Every Review must have a climax such is the case in this one: IRONTON HIGH--12 POINTS PORTSMOUTH HIGH-6 POINTS IN MEZLIORY OF THE GAME Our deadly rivals Caine that day To enter into this deadly fray Victory was sought by each It was a very tasty dish But one rnnst win, the other loose And the Tigers won from the Red and Blue. Portsmouth took the lead in the first half of play and endeavored to make a lopsided score at the end of the game. The big Red and Blue scored a touchdown in the first five minutes of play. Waiting their time the Tigers fought the Red and Blue facing defeat from one full half. Re-entering the game with renewed energy they released all of the fury, rage, and anger which was penned up within Seventy-two them and as a result turned what seemed like defeat into a glorious and brilliant victory. Proving more than a match for the Red and Blue, the Tigers in the second half proved their merit and scored a touchdown. Taking the ball almost in mid- field the Orange and Black started their victorious drive and completed it by pas- sing over the goal line. This day will be remembered and will always flame anew when the Tigers meet the Red and Blue. When luck is against you Pray show your true blue Clwcr the winner' who has given you defeat Because you were fairly and squarely beat. Falling short of establishing a clean record for the season, the Tigers sustained the single defeat of the season from Huntington High. Having the odds in their favor they handed the scrappy and hard fighting Orange and Black team a hard fought defeat. Hard fighting marked the full four quarters of the game. This was the last game of the season and therefore brot to a close the football career of the Ironton High School for the year of nineteen hundred and twenty-seven. Every girl in the high school is eligible to participate. There are five headings under which it is possible -to obtain points: namely. Health, Mental Attitude, Posture, Physical Activities, and Service. A record sheet is kept for each girl which shows the number of points she has earned to date. There are l04O points which may be earned. The first award given is a numeral. This requires the successful completion of 200 points and participant must play on Inter-class Basketball Team. 600 points entitles one to receive a letter. The highest possible award is a monogram, which is given when SOO points have been earned. Many girls have taken advantage of this plan to earn Ironton High School honor awards, and it has proved successful even though it has been in operation during the second semester only. ' Graduation from high school marks an important point in the careers of young men and young women. It is really a turning point, for at this time important decisions are made affecting after life. You now have what we call a general education-you know something of the orthodox 'ologies' and 'osophys', but your hands have not been trained nor your mind prepared to do the things that business requires-and you will be in business, no matter what vocation you may follow. We want you to understand that, while our school is necessarily limited in its field, it does a few things in a superior way-in other words, we are specialists devot- ing all of our time, our energies, and our material re- sources to the teaching of a few things in a super-exce1- lent manner. We are adequately prepared to give you the advantage of skillful, practical, complete training for the duties of business life, which you must in the very nature of things, assume very soon. We shall be happy to tell you more about our school. We know that a brief time spent with us will mean much to you all through the coming years. We know that your stay with us will be pleasant as well as profitable. You will have the opportunity to be associated with a fine group of young people-as fine a group as can be found in any college or university--and you will be under the direction of competent, earnest, sympathetic teachers, who will make your highest good their constant concern. Yours very cordially, S. C. SOUTHERN, President.
