I met some of Ironton's High School teachers who were teaching in 1927, our graduation year. I'll try to tell you of the trip from my home in I.os Angeles. Wlieii I started to board the train to Omaha City, another train was just pulling in, on which were Misses Hoffman. Dana, and Nazor. who. as l learned from a very short interview, were going to be movie stars. I was a bit surprised, but acted as though I thought that was the very thing they should do. i My next great surprise came when I had a three hour wait between trains at Flagstaff, Arizona. I was taking a horseback ride across the mesa through the cactus, when I saw Mr. Williaiiis, once a science teacher at Ironton High. trying out an experiment of grafting pineapples on cactus. This was a queer experiment, I told him, but he thought he could do it. I couldn't help thinking how the '27 faculty had drifted apart when I encountered Mr. Glore in Mississippi on a Chautauqua circuit playing the piano. He was captivating his audiences, but I was surprised to find him in that Work. He said Mr. Elliott was the branch manager, while Messrs. Miller. Phillips, and Stock were Hawaiian players. I had never thought they had such musical talent. I finally reached my old home town of Ironton. Ilere I learned that one of our former teachers, Miss Oesterle, had just disappeared quite suddenly It seemed that no one knew anvthing about her family or where she had gone. The whole town was agog. VVhile in Ironton I also learned that lXliss Iones had gone to Rome to learn more of the famous subject which she taught. I picked up the Ironton News, a large paper now, and read in the headlines that Mr. Sonny VVinters had won the cross country race trophy by running across the continent in seven days, three hours, and seven seconds. This took Iront n by storm, Sonny having once been Ironton High's coach. happened to meet Lena Smith in the large Finsterwald Department Store in Ironton, and she said that Gratia Flower and Helen Feuchter were salesladies. I was greatly surprised, for they were such capable teachers in high school. I wonder if they could have lost that talent. I finally landed in New York, ready to sail, but before I did. I thought I would like to go to a Broadway show. I picked out an attractive one, and Went that evening. To my surprise I found Edith Bingham and Leila lloaghn billed for toe dancing. They did real well, too. You wouldn't have expected that back in '27.
