I met some of Ironton's High School teachers who were teaching in 1927, our graduation year. I'll try to tell you of the trip from my home in I.os Angeles. Wlieii I started to board the train to Omaha City, another train was just pulling in, on which were Misses Hoffman. Dana, and Nazor. who. as l learned from a very short interview, were going to be movie stars. I was a bit surprised, but acted as though I thought that was the very thing they should do. i My next great surprise came when I had a three hour wait between trains at Flagstaff, Arizona. I was taking a horseback ride across the mesa through the cactus, when I saw Mr. Williaiiis, once a science teacher at Ironton High. trying out an experiment of grafting pineapples on cactus. This was a queer experiment, I told him, but he thought he could do it. I couldn't help thinking how the '27 faculty had drifted apart when I encountered Mr. Glore in Mississippi on a Chautauqua circuit playing the piano. He was captivating his audiences, but I was surprised to find him in that Work. He said Mr. Elliott was the branch manager, while Messrs. Miller. Phillips, and Stock were Hawaiian players. I had never thought they had such musical talent. I finally reached my old home town of Ironton. Ilere I learned that one of our former teachers, Miss Oesterle, had just disappeared quite suddenly It seemed that no one knew anvthing about her family or where she had gone. The whole town was agog. VVhile in Ironton I also learned that lXliss Iones had gone to Rome to learn more of the famous subject which she taught. I picked up the Ironton News, a large paper now, and read in the headlines that Mr. Sonny VVinters had won the cross country race trophy by running across the continent in seven days, three hours, and seven seconds. This took Iront n by storm, Sonny having once been Ironton High's coach. happened to meet Lena Smith in the large Finsterwald Department Store in Ironton, and she said that Gratia Flower and Helen Feuchter were salesladies. I was greatly surprised, for they were such capable teachers in high school. I wonder if they could have lost that talent. I finally landed in New York, ready to sail, but before I did. I thought I would like to go to a Broadway show. I picked out an attractive one, and Went that evening. To my surprise I found Edith Bingham and Leila lloaghn billed for toe dancing. They did real well, too. You wouldn't have expected that back in '27. Well, as soon as I recovered from this, I made preparations to sail the next day, and to- my great surprise, found Andy Andrews captain of the -.az-..s..u.v..v...v...-n...v.-.v..v.m 1 9 2 7 E.f3.vff.rai.a5-f:.-a.lf-.v.- Eight an ..l.'Ls.'u-v.aL.'-AY Q ' SY.:-s .. T H E O W L ,v,-v,v,,v,-ylhvapgv,-wl-v.v,-v,,v steamer. As he sang out to the shipmates, Order up there, I found myself thinking I was in 220 study hall back in the old days. He hasn't changed much-a little grav, but that's all. He said Adrienne Kouns had crossed just a month before. She was going to live in Spain the rest of her life, and spend her declining years in the land where she would feel so much at home. Andy said he was making his home in Chile, South America because the climate there was so nice and warm. . After stopping in London, I took a boat to Paris. I was doing some shop- ping in a Parisian store. when I happened to see ,lulia Layne buying a number of beautiful dresses. She said she needed a great many, being on a tour with Lillian Humphrey. who was giving lectures on science. She told me, too, that she was enjoying seeing many of the old historic places she had loved to teach of in school. She invited me to her rooms for dinner that evening, and I had a nice long talk with both her and Bliss Humphrey. They intended to return home as soon as they had covered France and Italy. My trip next took me to the Hawaiian Islands. where I met Cecil Hankins playing a ukelele under a large palm tree. I was so interested in his music that I stayed and had quite a talk with him, finding out that Miss Elam was running a large bank in Hawaii. He pointed out to me the place where Miller, Phillips, and Stock lived while learning to play the Hawaiian guitars for the Chautauqua. He wanted to play with them, but was unable to tear himself away from Hawaii. I enjoyed my trip. and told him all the news of the teach- ers I had met. He seemed surprised to learn that Mr. Andrews was captain of a ship, and told me that Andy had once plaved in the movies with Bonnie Griffith as his leading lady. She must have, I thought, obtained her gift in this line from Corinne Griffith, probably her relative. I went one evening to watch a boat come in. and watch the Hawaiian girls throw leis around the travelers' necks. when whom should I see coming off the boat but Miss Isabelle johnston and Miss Deffenbaugh. They were going to japan and China to be foreign missionaries. They admitted that thev were starting on this career later in life than was necessary, but said they felt the need of diversion after their years of teaching in Ironton High School. After bidding my friends here good-bye. I then set sail for Los Angeles. I returned home wiser as to where mv former high school teachers were, and as to what they were doing. I was rather tired after my trip, but a friend insisted I go to see the movie Forgotten written by Anna I.. jones, and played by Lucille Nazor as leading lady. I was charmed with Miss Nazor's acting, and with her ease before the camera. But that was not all,-the same program presented a comedy, Bridget O' Flynn , in which Miss Dana played the lead- ing feminine role. Mr. Larson, our former principal, played opposite her, and it was a scream. I will never forget it, and no one who has an opportunity to see it, should fail to do so. Surprises seem never to end, and cinema land seems about to depopulate the ranks of Ironton High's faculty. Mr. Hixson, I learn, has also succumbed to the Hollywood urge, and will be seen soon as Edna Hoffman's new leading man in The Little Parade. This, I believe, is all the news I learned of the Ironton High teachers of '27. I will admit I was much surprised to learn how they had turned out in most cases. -GRACE WILSON '27. CLASS HISTORY Each spring a class graduates from lronton High School. This year the class numbers only eighty-four, but what it lacks in number has been made up in enthusiasm. This is the time for each senior to glance backward-to recall the sorrows and joys which have been his. lt seems impose sible that four long years, in truth four short years, have passed since we, as freshmen entered the portals of old lronton High. Soon the class of '27 began to take its place among the other classes. The almost unheard of privilege, that of organizing, was given to our class, and we chose Edward Neekainp president. 7 Sad to say. the number of bovs in our class has always been short. but nevertheless we have supplied some valuable material in all phases of MARGARET ALLEN Class Historian athletics- In the summer of 1923 we returned, taking up our rights as Sophomores. This time the girls were represented by the election of Juanita Capper, president. This year was generally uneventful and passed swiftly onward toward the Junior year. Back once more. but this time as luniors. Again was luanita Capper chosen to lead us during the year, and strongly backed by her classmates. began work to raise the money for the Junior-Senior Prom. Candy sales and bakes sales were given by the Class but the main thing of the year was the Junior plav. Her lslusband's VVife, which was a great success. The class was repaid for all the work it had done, for the Prom was certainly a success. Ask any of the Seniors: they will tell you. September lQ26. Rack this time as dignified Seniors. This time the honor of President was conferred upon Richard Gallagher. He, too, prove-l worthy. NYifli our last year came an important event, the dedication of the Stadium on Thanksgiving Day. The last year brought much work to be done. The Owl Staff had to be chosen, and the many other things connected with the graduation of a class. All these things kept us busy up to the end of the year. But with all this, the class of '27 was not too busy to put across some successful parties. A complete record of the achievement of a class is an impossible task. Many things have not been mentioned, but we all have our remembrances of school activities. Graduation Day is only a few short weeks away. XVe have striven hard to reach this goal and many have fallen by the wayside. Now that they are almost over every senior feels that these years have been the happiest he will ever know. Many lasting friendships have been made during these four years and some of our classmates we may never again see, but as we leave her familiar and dear portals, never again to come back as a class, let us always remember to bring nothing but honor and praise to our dear old Ironton High. -. .G-.Q-Fif.i2ai4.i.ai..i.i+:4i 1 9 2 7 i.TJ2-Lfgigfil Thirty-four 1Qg53,v 7 f - v g. VVe certainly had a fine trip. and met a bunch of old friends from the Alma Mater,-many of them in the most unexpected places and occupations, too. NrVhat differences and changes a few years can bring about! At the outset. as we were pulling out of lron- ton on the 81 VV.. whom should we see but the jolly Bill Horschel? Yes, it was he: he is now a conductor, and was telling me that Rav Rlank- enship runs with him as brakeman. VX'hen we got off at Columbus, there was Leon Livisay acting in the capacity of porter. Having some ! time between trains, we had him carry out bags to a taxi, and lo and behold, Vernon Remy was CHAR'-ES Al-BERT the driver. After driving about the city for Class Pf'0Phef a while, we returned to the station and took a train for Toledo. Un the same train were Margaret Allen, Clara Andrews, llelen Fisher. and Leona Davis, all bound for a big national G. R. Convention. They had plenty of news to tell us. You knew old Lou Hannan, didn't you? And Violet Hafley? VVell, they have united, and l.ou is running a meat shop at NYahoo, with Hick Trish for an assistant. Dick Davis and Ellie Lynd have married, and Davis plays basketball with the Chicago Bears. Marguerite llugger has become a noted pianist, and is on an extended concert tour. Meeting and conversing with our former classmates has made the time pass quickly, and before we knew it we had arrived at our destination. lt was lunch time when we left the train: so we stopped in a restaurant. and were amazed to see that Ray Brothers and Carl Browning were the proprie- tors, and that Ernie Hrownstead was chef. The cooking was bad. but we had an enjoyable hour together. .Xs we were leaving Toledo we met Charles Griffith and his manager, Frank l.ambe. Frank told us that Griffith was to fight the next night for the national heavyweight championship. Our train was soon to leave: so we wished them good luck, and climbed aboard. Presently the newsbutch came througb our coach, and I bought a paper from him. There was much news of interest in the paper. Kathleen lliggins, Marguerite Hogsten, Ruth llnghes, Mildred justice, and Inez Lawless had left that very morning for Cario to study the Egyptian dances. Charles Boll, who had become a renowned lawyer, was to prosecute Karl and Robert Schweickart for alleged crookedness in a big lumber deal. Helen Breeding and Genevieve Abel have opened a beauty parlor next door to the millinery establishment of Sylvia Brown and Gladys Pouch on Michigan Boulevard, Chicago. Suddenly the train jerked and came to an abrupt stop. The conductor tEdwin Bradyj informed us that he would be held up for several hours, as the . ii in .- Y W - 1- . - -. 5 fivim. 1 9 2 7 i,igi,y,75,v,gvf3if,ifv-.An Thi rl y-five 1 ,f J1 ,.i 5 'A T H E O W L ,gg Mg-1+ engine had broken down. This was exasperating news. As we looked out of the window for diversion, whom should we see but George Bazell and Lindsay Bruce, the noted biologists, dashing through a clover field after butterflies? We alighted from the train to stretch ourselves for a while, when along came Mozella Hickey, Mary Dole, Hazel Fields, Thelma Gee, and Juanita Graham, accompanied by their boy friends , bound for a picnic beyond the next town. We hailed them, and they took us into Brownsville. ln this town is situated a large pickle factory. All the men who worked in the factory had gone on a strike, and presently we saw Bertha Haney, Eliza- beth Clutts, Helen Holliday, and Ceola Massie, all dressed in overalls and blue shirts, entering the factory doors. They were taking the places of the strikers in the manly art of manufacturing pickles. As there was no train out of Brownsville, we had to take a traction for Allenton to get a train for Chicago. On board the interurban we found Clark Campbell as motorman, and Richard Gallagher as conductor. They told us that a group of girls from the old crowd in Ironton had banded together and formed a model town without men. The group consisted of Juanita Capper, Mary Double, Beatrice Griffith, Jean McCollister, and Gwendolyn McConnell. As no men are allowed to enter the town, I was unable to see them. On the same traction was Tom Hughes, who is a salesman for the firm of Mitchell and Pasley QNance and Ethelj, manufacturers of men's patent leather hair polish. Tom, like all other traveling salesmen, had a big line , and he amused us all the way into Allenton, where we got off. The next person of old acquaintance that we encountered was none other than Austin Jenkins with a truck load of vegetables. He, we learned, is a very successful and prosperous farmer. About three blocks from the inter- urban station we met Frederick Schilling who is attending business college in Allenton. He told us that this college is run by our faithful friend, Miss Edith Bingham. Other students enrolled from Ironton include Eleanor Shields, Flora Williams, Clarence Leach, Carter Massie, Alice Smith, Maynard Riggs, and Marjorie Sockel. Since we had to wait over in Allenton until 2:00 A .M., we decided to take in the side shows that happened to be in town that evening. La Ferne Salyers was exhibited as a midget, and Ed Neekamp was The Tall Man from Texas. Grace Wilson, Hildred Williams, Stella Griffith, Margaret Urick, and Marg- aret Richendollar were main attractions, they being hula-hula girls. During the course of the evening we discovered that this show was owned by Bill Hobbs. On the grounds we met George Kurtz working at a hot-dog stand. We left Allenton late that night, not at all sorry for the break down of our locomotive earlier in the day, since that lucky accident had brought us into contact with so many old friends. After arriving at Chicago, we went to a summer cottage on the lake where we remained for two weeks. We found a group of old friends situated about two miles up the beach from us,--Eliza- beth Moreland, Evelyn Ratcliff, Esther Taylor, Evelyn Tufts, Carol Morgan and Gussie Vermillion. They were spending a delightful summer there. Our two weeks at the lake brought our vacation to an end, and we return- ed to Ironton. Our return trip was almost uneventful, but we did meet Phil Sheridan and his bride QGeneva Wilemanj going on their honeymoon. All in all, john, it was a very enjoyable trip. 1i'2K'in.'Ani.us5'.-L'4'v2lL511'i.?.v.'W 1 9 2 7 iFlVL3:5iF1J5gi'g. .4n'n'.a'- ' Thirty-.six ITT- T Lv Y S . Rosemary Burnette stops all recitations, When she steps out in her Paris creations. Every day Mid Boggess avoids delay, By riding to school in a Ford Coupe. Ruth Williams and Helen Lane, As tennis stars will gain much fame. Mary james is not a man hater, But take it from us she's some debater. Hall, Hankins, and Cardwell too, There's nothing in Physics they can't do. John J. Turley-super sheik, Thrills several girls every day of the week. Jean, Jane, and Edna, too, Always do what G. R.'s should do. The Junior class has two Darlene's Martin and VVeaver, so it seems. You all know Bob Bartram, and also Dick Lynd, When they start selling tickets, they're bound to win. Eva and Thelma are very good friends: You'll find them together when the school dayiends. George Mittendorf is an only son, And a Wreal Wrigley fan, by gum! When Dot Gannon lacks things to say, Dot Hayes chimes in, Parlez-vous francaisu? Bert Howell has gone quite daffy, From eating so much of Clem's taffy. Lois Rutledge is really sweet And as class president, can't be beat. In any way it can be done, Shacky Mahl will have his fun. The jolliest Bakers we've ever met Are Laura, Lawrence and Elizabeth. Mrs. Stewart's little girl Ann, Sure hits the high spots in her tin can. You all know Ralph Mahle, who tries to look grim But try as he may the grin won't stay in. Altho Bruce Rollyson is tall in his stature Don't blame him, cause it's only his nature. Howard may be seen, when classes close, Walking down the hall with Rose. Tommy Lyons, a basketball man, To do without him, none of us can. Roberta Karreman and Marion Ault, Two charming maidens with hardly a fault. By her red hair you'll know Gertrude Pratt, You're bound to see her wherever you're at. G. stands for Gehrling, Liz is her name, By her yelling ability, she has gained fame. Alice Andrews and Mary Southworth are among the many Forty-one L' afm' THE OWL Seen chewing gum in room two-twenty. Tho Clarie Sherburne is the daughter of a minister You can put up stakes that she'll never be a spinster Are yo-u acquainted with Don Freed's girl? Neither am I, but they say she's a Pearl. The Mascari family is leaving home, Bill's driving them out with his saxophone. Ruthyan Henry, the kid with the curls, ls quite the cutest of cute little girls. Virginia McCready is doomed by fate, To arrive at school ten minutes late. Wilma Tobert is a real student, we'll say, Her marks are seldom less than A. There's a girl in our class, whom we call Spoofy And for no other reason than that she's sogoofy Dick Creith and Bob Hudson are 226's pest, Miss Layne takes them seriously, but the're only in jest Maidens if you swoon, swoon safely Near the brawny arms of Hafle. Pauline Gibson is always filled with joy, When she meets a certain Sophomore boy. Elsie and Helen are the best of pals, just try to find two cuter gals. Three good fellows, we said, were Ault, Goodrich and Hewltt But the joke was on us, cause they already knew it His name is Patterson, they call him Paul And he sports an orange I, having played football Moore and Pelfrey are of no great height, But that doesn't slight them even a mite. Mitchell and Hutsinpillar take the cake- Mutt and jeff, that's no mistake. Ethel Willis and Helen Henthorn, Recite with fervor every morn. We'll give Herb Mooney a share of the cake, For as assistant banker, he's by no means a fake. Doris and Kathleen, calm and serene, There isn't a person who'd call them mean. Katie Turner and Mattie West, If it's anything strenuous, they'll stand the test. Frances Hall makes the Juniors proud, VVith her talent for singing she draws a crowd. Glen Stevenson, some think is very lucky, To be a corncracker from old Kentucky. Waller and Lambert, so very shy- We always whisper when we pass them by. It seems to me Beulah Pierce will succeed: She's well known, and has some speed. NVhen Elza Stewart runs with the ball, He surely makes his opponents fall. Josephine Hogsten and Mary Dean, Never say what they don't mean, Don't worry about Judson in his car, For the simple reason that it won't go far. With the names of McDaniel and Long, I will conclude this senseless song. THE FRESHMANS FAREWELL ADDRESS -+QlliB++' Eight months and ten days ago the doors of Ironton High School swung open to welcome a new class, conceived in wisdom and dedicated to the proposition that all Freshman classes are unlike. The trials and sorrows of the class have been few, if any, while the joys and honors multiply with the bringing of each new day by Father Time. Now we are members of this high school, wondering whether this school could long endure without us. We humbly admit that we have the best class spirit. VV e have been showered with honors, yea, many honors for performing duties, that our school might progress. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should tell this. But in a larger sense we cannot withhold, we cannot restrain, we cannot bridle some illustrations. The class of ,3O, alive and doing, has given members to various activities, activities would have been unsuccessful without them. Football, basket- ball, and track laid forth their claims. The sweet charms of music have induced some to enter glee clubs, string quartette, orchestra and band. And we are far too modest to mention essay contest honors, inter-class honors, and class party. VVe admit we are meek and humble, and unsophisticated, but we hate to confess that we are brilliant, talented, charming, and handsome. The school will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what we are doing here. It is for us, the Freshmen, to increase class spirit, and to carry the Scarlet and Gray to heights sublime in high school circles. Moreover it is for us, the class of ,3O, to help to advance Irontou High School to ideals ne'er reached before, that from these ideals her sons and daughters may grasp 'truths and 'inspiration to aid them in every land and clime, and that these ideals of the students, by the students, and for the students, shall not perish from I. The cafeteria was seasonably decorated, and the costumes of the dancers were interesting. Charles Griffith was awarded a prize for being the best dis- guised. A five-piece orchestra furnished music for dancing. Dec. 17 .-Inviting the juniors to participate, the Seniors planned and carried out an enjoyable Christ- mas dance to mark the beginning of the holiday season. It was the last dance of the old year, and j each junior and Senior manifested the gay Christmas spirit. Holly and mistletoe and evergreens inter- woven with class colors made attractive decoration. EVELYN RATCLIFF Dancing was enjoyed until a late hour. S0CiCfY Edifm' jan. 21.-Sophomores and juniors cooperated with the Seniors in arranging for a dance to follow the Logan game. Appropriate decorations adorned the cafeteria, Where members of the three classes enjoyed dancing to the strains of johnny VVilliams' orchestra. JUNIOR DANCE To mark the conclusion of the football season, the junior class invited the members of the gridiron squad to be their guests of honor at a dance in the cafeteria. The affair was a great success, highly appreciated by the football boys. SOPHOMORE DANCE The Sophomores were the only class privileged to have a dance during the second semester, as it is customary to suspend major social activities in the school during Lent, and by the conclusion of that period Commencement activities begin to loom. The fact that the Sophomore dance came late in the year does not indicate that the class lacks spirit: on the contrary, this dance proved to be one of the most successful of the year. FRESHMAN DANCE The Freshmen enjoyed a Valentine party on February twenty-first. The cafeteria was decorated for the event with red hearts and the class colors. Music for dancing was furnished by the Abie De Lugan Specials. Prizes were awarded to the best dancers. ALUMNI DANCES For the first time in a number of years the Alumni Association made itself felt in the social life of the school. Heretofore, the annual reception for the gradu- ating class has been the sole alumni social event of the yearg but this year three very successful dances have been given in the high school gymnasium. These were planned at times when college students were home on vacation, and they were well attended by both college and high school students. The Thanksgiving season was chosen as the time for the first of these dances. Though in the nature of an experiment, this affair was so successful that ofhcials of the Alumni organization felt warranted in planning similar events. Qld associa- tions were recalled, and the spirit of enthusiasm prevailed. The Christmas holiday dance was, if anything, a greater success than the Thanksgiving hop. The gymnasium was elaborately decorated to suit the season, and fully five hundred dancers enjoyed music furnished by the All Stars. Novelties and favors added a holiday flavor to the festivities. Although not so many college students were fortunate enough to be home for the VVashington's Birthday dance, it proved very enjoyable, and bore out the reputa- tion of the alumni for successful social events. Looking forward, as we go to press, to Commencement week, we prophesy the most successful annual reception in recent years. 1 9 '2 7 g sv' W : V Fiji 7 V 9-,Q Fifty-four ' QT .-. v--,-. -. .- 1 9 2 7 fr-. i - Iiiflj'-ffT'c' 'el s e -- e ef T HE OWL e' Under the direction of Xlr. illorc, Z1 grzlduzite of the Cincinnati Conservzltory of Klusic, lronton High School has, in one year :md Il half, made unpreced- ented progress in the music depzlrtment. Their public appearances, however, have so far been limited to High School entertainments but we do hope that the following year will bring more. The orchestra has appeared in chapelg on the Christmas program, during National Music VVeekg and will also furnish some of the Commencement Music. Boy's Glee Club The feature event of the club for the year was the presentation of .1 Minstrel Show. Ralph Kerns took the leading part, and greatly delighted his audience with his rich tenor voice. The success of this organization is due largely to the time and patience given it by Mr. Glore. VVe congratulate this club and extend to them our best wishes for success and growth in the future. High School Band A band has recently been organized by Mr. Glore and made its first ap- pearance during National Music VVeek. Although this organization has not as yet played a very important part in the school program, its prospects for the future are very bright. Girl's Glee Club The Girl's Glee Club is one of the popular organizations of the school. It has during the past year, enjoyed a considerable growth. On various occasions the club has appeared before assemblies and has been invariably well received. The girls rendered a very beautiful program of Christmas carols in chapel and so pleased their audience that they were asked to sing at a later date. However, the crowning musical event of the school year was the operetta. In India , which was given at the High School Auditorium the night of May second. In perfection of both musical and spoken parts, as well as in the beauty of scenes and settings. the operetta was judged by all who saw it, to have been the best ever presented by our high school. The greatest credit is due Miss Hoaglin and Mr. Glore for the success of the entertainment. The orchestra, accompanying the chorus, added to the success of the operetta. The story, dealing with life in India and the choosing of a dancing girl to live in the temple, was carried out by the following cast: Meerah fthe chosen onej . . . It made its first appearance at a Parent-Teacher's Meeting and since then has made many public appearances. The club will have prominent part in the Commencement program. String Quartette The String Quartette is one of the newest features of the Music Depart- ment. This is the most difficult form of musical entertainment and it is a great accomplishment to be a member of such an organization. This Quartette has played at a Rotary meeting, a Child VVelfare Dinner, the VVoman's Music Club, and at the Art Exhibit. They also appeared in Chapel, and during National Music VVeek. She coaches the girls' basketball team, conducts classes and examinations in life saving, puts on a dance festival once a year and numerous special programs, plans and carries out the program for coronation of Senior Queen during Commence- ment week, coaches tennis, and advises the girls' tennis club, and makes her- self generally useful in the Physical Education department. lllr. That is a big enough program for anyone, and that Mr. NVinters is successful is attested by the fact that his teams are successful. Mr. Stock assisted him in coaching football this year. Mr. Andrews, track coach de luxe, thinks in terms of track even when the ground is covered with snow, or the football season is at its height. As a consequence, he is able to convert his raw material into ,winning teams in which l. H. S. can take the greatest pride. The meet went to Logan by that margin. That Ironton High had the best squad that day is beyond doubt. ln two different races, Ironton runners were leading by comfortable margins, when over-confidence near the end resulted in hair-breadth decisions against us. lfither race, as results showed, would have won the meet. Second again in the District meet at Chillicothe, lronton failed to run to form on the gravel-bed track there. Outstanding as a group were the four Senior members of the team. Stanley Hafle was elected captain for 1927. One of the main-stays on last year's squad, he is expected to be better than ever as captain. Captain D. M. Carr spent three days with us, and conducted both junior and Senior tests. He was assisted by Miss Hoaglin who was certified by him for an examinership. A large percentage passed the examinations. At the end of this year, the crew will probably be enlarged by a number of girls who will be candidates for the junior crew. They are taking the course from Miss Hoaglin. TENNIS Tl1e organization of a girls' tennis club this spring marks the entrance of I. H. S. into a new sport. About fifty girls belong to the club, and a number of them already promise to be very proficient in the game. The members are directing their efforts toward the improve1nent'of some of the courts in Beechwood field, and will hold an inter-class tourney near the close of school. Graduation from high school marks an important point in the careers of young men and women. It is really a turning point, for at this time important decisions are made affecting after life. You now have what we call a general education-you know something of the orthodox 'ologies' and 'osophys', but your hands have not been trained nor your mind prepared to do the things that business requires-and you will be in business, no matter what vocation you may follow. We want you to understand that, while our school is necessarily limited in its field, it does a few things in a superior way-in other words, we are specialists devot- ing all of our time, our energies, and our material re- sources to the teaching of a few things in a super-excel- lent manner. We are adequately prepared to give you the advantage of skillful, practical, complete training for the duties of business life, which you must in the very nature of things, assume very soon. We shall be happy to tell you more about our school. We know that a brief time spent with us will mean much to you all through the coming years. We know that your stay with us will be pleasant as well as profitable. You will have the opportunity to be associated with a fine group of young people-as fine a group as can be found in any college or university-and you will be under the direction of competent, earnest, sympathetic teachers, who will make your highest good their constant concern. Yours very cordially, S. C. SOUTHERN, President.
