Education ' s purpose is to pre- pare each of us to better decide our direction and perspective of life. For some it is necessary to believe in someone or something enough to suffer the consequences of that belief. Others prefer to re- main aloof of such involvement. Each of us develops within our own pliable eggshell. The period of incubation varies for each indi- vidual. In one way or another all contribute to the progress of man. We are constantly distilling per- ceptions so they will mesh with our pattern of life. These disti lla- tions are feedback from our exper- iences. Decisions we make are personal commitments. The most uninvolved of us has made a choice. Non-commitment commits even the most uncommitted. All of us derive our views from expos- ure, interaction and integration of others ' thoughts. By tempering experience with knowledge, each person arrives at his destiny. 75

Before knowledge can temper our thoughts, it must be gained through course work. This chal- lenge often leaves participants lonely, worn out and dejected. The late-night cramming for tests in the solitude of your room, noc- turnal bull sessions sparked by rigorous study and the peace of a quiet nap reflect education ' s ag- gravation and enchantment. Unlikely as it may seem, and as hard as we try to resist it — most of us came to Iowa State for an ed- ucation. Beneath the disguises we model for others — and sometimes ourselves — we seek self-improve- ment. This ' ulterior ' motive makes us competitors in the educational process. 77
