College education means dif- ferent things to each of us. To some it connotes four tedious years of studying for omnipresent exams. Others cope with the ard- uous challenge of study by making it as pleasant as possible. A warm spring day often covers central campus and other grassland areas with students studying — more or less. Education at Iowa State does mean many things, but to all it is a period of exposure, experience and creativity. These ingredients and their development will chart our lives. Those Uves may be in megalopolis or down on the farm, but all of us will use our college education to plot what we per- ceive as a better design of living. 69

Am Education is accumulated through activity outside, as well as inside the classroom. The two types of knowledge complement one another. The struggle to succeed in the classroom is an endeavor requir- ing fortitude. Achievement is gained and acknowledged only as a result of effort. The stakes are high. You are molding the pattern of your life. This pattern may con- tain the intricacy of a maze or the simplicity of a circle. The burden of toiling with the pattern pieces is hghtened by memories of the struggle. The li- brary ' s haunting silence and class- room exercises mingle with the joys realized by cutting that Fri- day 4 o ' clock. Your heart quickens remembering the nearness of someone dear. The novacaine of pleasure deadens the pain of un- relenting study. 70
