The slow ol Cden ' s climb to a berth on the Olympie team started in I ' JK ). In that year Brand wrestled his way to a third place in the NC.AA wrestling tournameni. The h)llo ving ear he captured second in the same competition and in 1 1 IS he worked his way to the championship ol the NCAA. The same year tryouts were held at Iowa State Cc:)llege for the United States Olympic team. Iowa State fans had the o]jportuniiy to watch their arsity mat- man wrestle his way to the honor ol repre- senting the United States in ihe middle- weight class. After winning a first j lace on the United States team, the next step was London where the Olympic games were to i)e held. C.len ' s first match vas witli a wrestler from India who gave him the stitfest com- petition of all contenders. Brand won by decision and received his only discjiialifying mark, (den scored a fall against each ol his next two op|)onenls, one Irom Australia and one from I inke . ' ' xiul llic COLLEGE ENROLLMENT figures rose to a new record for fall and winter quarters The registration line at Beardshear Hall for fall quarter of 1948 included over ten thousand students, the largest enrollment in the history of Iowa State College. This total surpassed the previous record set in 1947 by more than three htmdred students. AboiU half of those registering in the fall of 1948 were veterans attending college on the GI Bill. There was a drop in veteran enrollment of aboiu five hiuidrcd as com- pared with fall quarter 1947. .About four tunes as many men as women were regis- tered. As was the case in colleges throughoiu the country, engineering students led the field in numbers. Iowa State foimd that thirty- six per cent of the total enrollment in the fall of 1948 consisted of engineers. This, ho vever, Avas a marked decrease from the year before when thirty-nine per cent of the total niunber of students registered in engineering. 16
