Dr. Frank H. Spedding, head of this gi ' oiip, directed the vork toward atomic research. Dining the war these scientists contrilnitcd hea ily to atomic knowledge by the dis- co ery ol how to inexpensively ])r()(liice pure tliorium and uranium on a large scale basis. Upon the suggesiicjn of President Charles E. Friley, the Board of EducaticMi of Iowa est ablished a separate budget to create ilie Institute for Atomic Research. The purpose of the Institute is to finther the peacetime developments in atomic research. and encoinage the application of new tools to the arious types of research on the lampus and cooperative work be- tween the ari()us departments and di i- sions.

What is known as the Link has been constructed between the Chemistry and Physics Buildings. This building con- necting the adjoining buildings will house the main oliices of the InstitiUe on the c ampiis. The two sections will be connected by a tunnel. Llie Institute procures funds from many sources other than the state budget. Almcjst all of the funds for the present expansion originated outside ol the stale appropriations. The war time record of the Atomic Institiue as primarily the production of a purer low cost uranium and thorium. In recognition of liie woik done at Iowa Slate.
