ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES ELEMENTARY FAVORITES WHO'S WHO ACTIVITIES CALENDAR SPORTS SPRING ACTIVITIES SNAPSHOTS ADVERTISEMENTS Foreword From the Editor's Desk Half the joy of compiling this Hawk's Nest was the delight of reliving the spirit and enthusiasm that prevailed throughout 1953-'54, and the know- ledge that perhaps someone, somewhere would be enjoying it too. Emerson said, Every great and commanding moment in the annals of the world is the triumph of some enthusiasm. This could well pertain to our high school annual. The enthusiasm has been great and the triumphs many. If for one mo- ment you can recall part of this and glory in it, I feel our mission will have been completed and our duty done well. A tremendous Thanks to each of you who made this yearbook possible. Beverly Barker Editor-in-Chief COACH TED AVERITT COACH RAY CORBETT To the two great guys that have made this year unforgettable in Sports, we humbly dedicate this 1954 edition of the Hawk's Nest. Without them we feel the success achieved by our teams would have been impossible. THE STAFF During the few short ears that we were privileged to have Judy with us, she endeared herself to all who knew her. Her sunny disposition, coopera- tion, loyalty, industry, enthusiasm, friendliness, helpfulness, and Christian character were things for which she was noted. We will miss Judy, but we are comforted by the thought that she still lives. As William White said, The soul of her, the glowing gorgeous soul of her, surely is flaming in eager joy upon some other dawn. School Board Mr. Joe Cope Mr. D. O. James Mr. H. B. Klinkerman Mr. J. A. McDonald Iowa Park High School Box 141, Iowa Park, Texas Dear Mrs. McDonald: We have just Finished judging the lovely girls and handsome boys of the Iowa Park High School. The jury consisted of ten qualified people. In place of using names, each picture was numbered, and all of the judges voted on written ballots. The judges all admitted that it was an excep- tionally hard job to judge beauty from a single photograph without seeing the person, and the judges expressed their sincere regrets that they didn't have the opportunity of seeing and talking to the contestants. It was such an exceptionally handsome group of students that none of the decisions were unanimous, and most of the time placement was made by a margin of 1 or 2 votes. Iowa Park should be proud of having such a large number of fine looking and intelligent young people. Sincerely, Jon L. The Hawks started practice on September 1 and scored 206 points for an average of 20.6 points per game to their opponents’ 129 points for an average of 12.9 points per game. Jimmy Martin. James Williams, Leonard Luckett, and Cla- burne Lindley were chosen on the all-district 9-A team while Mickey Sewell, Dale Girard, and Bubs Fenner were given honorable men- tion. Claburne Lindley was chosen on the Class A all-area team. Leonard Luckett was given honorable mention on the Dallas Times- Herald Class A All-State team and also on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class A All-State team. The Hawks opened the season here by blanking Munday 13-0 and also the follow- ing week shut out Valley View 20-0. On September 25, the Electra Tigers out-classed the Hawks 37-12. Iowa Park followed this by winning their third shut-out victory 19- 0 over Newcastle. In the first conference game with Crowell, the Hawks took a 6-0 lead, but Crowell, blocked a Hawk punt just before the half to take a 7-6 lead. It stood this way until late in the fourth quarter when Crowell scored two more touchdowns to win 20-6. The following week, the Hawks shut out Archer City 20-0 for their first conference victory. The District Champion Paducah Dragons followed with a 32-13 victory over the Hawks. The Dragons only had a 19-13 lead deep in the final quarter, but pulled away from the Hawks in the last few minutes. Iowa Park then dumped Hen- rietta 50-8 and followed this up with a 34-12 victory over Holliday. In the final game of the season, Chillicothe scored with 40 seconds left to play to come from behind and upset the Hawks 20-19. In these last 40 seconds the Hawks roared back to the Chillicothe 10- yard line, but time ran out. The Hawks were greatly handicapped in this game when all- district tackle Jim Martin played only a few minutes of the first quarter because of the flu and Dale Girard was out of the entire game with a back injury. The Hawks shut out four opposing teams but none of the teams were able to blank the Hawks. Lettermen for the 1953 Hawk team were Capt. Jimmy Martin, Capt. James Williams, Capt. Leonard Luckett, Capt. Claburne Lind- ley, Dale Girard, Mickey Sewell, Cecil Mar- quart, George Clements, Loyd Lewis, Bubs Fenner, Delos Whisenhunt, Fred Lewis, J. C.
