I u -- f- , -, 1 y ..-fs'a'2v.,i, gusiin in J' . ea-j?'l' 'll The 1946 football season generated for green and white Hawks more appreciation for their coach and more pride in their own integrity. From a won-and-lost standpoint this sea- son could not be deemed a complete success, although figures can never be considered a true criterium. Still, the season definitely should not be termed a failure. This year's team was the first to take the gridiron representing Iowa Park since be- fore the war. In spite of its main handicap, inexperience, the Iowa Park team built a splendid record for themselves in sports-- manship. Ray Shook, who with Raymond Cope so ably served in the capacity of co-captain, was rated a guard position on the second all-district team. Without injuries, which plagued the team all season, Ray would probably have been a unanimous choice for a post on the first team chosen from the stars in the district. Although he will be losing some outstanding players through graduation and ineligi- bility, bright spots on which Coach Wood can base his expectations for a shining future are Choyce Brown, Rip Van Winkle, and John Parish. Kenneth Watts is a performer who will be missed considerably next season. A fitting climax to the season of play was the final game with Valley View. After a slow start which was probably influenced by the crowning of the Queen of Footballers, Patsy Ann Rogers, the Hawks mixed line plunges and end sweeps with passes to annex 19-0 decision. Coach R. V. Pete Wood stated that he believes, in the future, the Hawks will have a team that can rip through the middle and come up with honors on their wings. I Coach R. V. One of the keynotes of this seasons team was inconsistencyg after dropping the first conference game to Archer City by 2 points, the Green and White bounced back to take thrilling 1 and 2 point decisions from Olney and Burkburnett, re- spectively. The end of the season found Iowa Park jiisL a notch below Olney, the district champs. A liigh point in the season of play came as the Green and White entered the Petrolia tournament, T.ie local boys played Oklaunion in the consolation iinalsg the contest may be described as a football game with baseball scores. Iowa Park came out in the li-11.1 of a 13-11 count. and b:ought home the consola- liJr1 trophy, Basketball games in the Iowa Park gym this year were strictly the cream of the crop. A Hawk policy wa,-s to spot the visiting' team the lead for the first half. While the Green and White annexed all but one of their home games, virtually every contest was either won or lost by a slim margin-a sure indicator of the teams popularity with spectators. They have only one de- feat which was to Olney by two points. One of the most outstanding play- ers on the team was our little 5 9 sophomore, Billie Joyce Bryant. She always kept our opponents half paralyzed with those hard driven spikes. All players this year except two, Billie Bryant and Bobbie Part- ney, were seniors. Associate Editor OF '47 EDITORS NOTE: After nights of plan- ning and days of toiling, this first edition of the Hawk's Nest is finally yours. Since this was thg first publication of an annual for this school it was a little difficult to compile all needed materials. With the co-operation of all persons concurned we have at last achieved our aim. We hope that in years to come the Hawk's Nest shall become a fixture in High School as permanent as the Fair and the Craterville trip. I would like to thank Mr. Bradford, the faculty, and the student body for their wholehearted co-operation, without which we would have never been able to succeed. J. N.
