Ione Ione Ione Ione Ione BASEBALL HIGHLIGHTED BY ALL-STAR GAME The 1954 version of the Ione Varsity baseball team was anything but successful. Winning only 3 while losing 7, the Mustangs were plagued by lack of experience and injuries. Of their seven losses only two were of the humbling variety. 'I'hese were at the hands of the Bret Harte team and the champion Jackson nine. with a couple of breaks in several games, the Mustangs could have played . 500 ball or better. As there was only one grad- uating senior on the team, the prospects for the future are bright. The high Z3 point of the year came in the last game when the Ione sluggers fix combed Summerville pitching for 17 hits and a 23-'7 triumph. A The Mustangs sent Jerry Irvin, the league's best catcher, Ronnie Hawkins, a hustling outfielder, Marcus Johnston, freshman sec- ond base- ' V man who led the team in hitting, and Art Clark, who was capa- ble of f playing almost any position on the diamond, to the All-Star Game at the end of the season. 4 -is Coaching both the Ione Varsity and the All-Star Game was ,I Mr. Isbell. He has tried to give the players more experience, and 'if through his efforts and patience, there are prospects of Ione being near the top of the league next year.
