MUSTANG L V. 'S HAVE BEST RECORD IN YEARS The Ione football Mustangs had one of their best seasons in years as they won 5 out of '7 games. Their season started on a low note-losing to Tuolumne by a 21-6 score and ended with a thriller lost to Calaveras by 13-12. I1 between they romped over 5 opponents as they scored 143 points to the oppo- sition's 14 Outstanding were the running of halfback Bob Schelly and fullback Ben Brown, the pass-catching of end Paul Layher, and the quarterbacking of Ernie Del Rio. A prime factor in making such a successful season possible was the big Ione line which averaged 180 pounds. with Jim Grover and Paul Layher at end, Dick Holbo and Tom Grover at tackle, Larry Stroh and Ronnie Hawkins at the guard slots, and Art Clark at center, the Mustangs could almost always count on a hole when needed rx a stiff defense when the going got tough. Superior coaching by Mr. Schilpp and Mr. Isbell was another factor in the successful season. Most pleasant victory was the 33-0 lacing of Jackson in a game where the Mustangs could do no wrong. Most exciting game was the finale at Calaveras when Ione scored their 2 touchdowns on the last play of each half - only to lose by one point. 45 6 13 26 27 I Ione Ione I Ione . In the League Tournament they got into the finals, but lost out to Jackson 50-34. Our mainstays on the A team were seniors Art Clark and Bob Schelly, Ronnie Hawkins, a junior, sophomore Paul Layher, and Marcus Johnston, a freshman who beat out some upperclassmen for his for- ward position. Big Jim Grover also was in there for lots of help during the last part of the season. scorer was tall Paul Layher who scored 214 points in 16 games. Led by Captain Bob Woolsey, along with Brian Bennett, Dave Walloupe, Bob Shortridge, Mike Hasty, and Fred Ybright, the young and unseasoned athletes competed in some games against fierce competition. Although behind most of each game, these boys never once gave up but fought right down to the final whistle. The Ione High School C and D basketball teams played a round-robin schedule with Amador and Jackson. They were unable to win a game, but many of the players who helped on these two teams moved up and played on the B team. Brian Bennett and Bob Shortridge from the C team, Fred Ybright and Bob Thompson from the D team moved up to the B team in Mother Lode competition. The D and C teams are a proving ground for young basketball players. They stress the funda- mentals necessary for keener competition, as it lays the ground work for future years.
