S R. K. Lloyde Neville S. Redmon Adult Education Adult Education Secretaries R. K. Lloyde, Principal Inglewood Evening High School and Director of Adult Education Marjorie McCain Colleen Ralph Neville S. Redmon. Supervisor National Defense Training Edna A. Nash, National Defense Secretary Mildred Griffin. Statistical Secretary Violet Willet, Assistant National Defense Secretary National Defense Office Sylvia Mahan, Supervising Clerk Ruby Hoback. Purchase Order Clerk Doris Johnson. Financial Secretary Adelia Ogan, Assistant Clerk This year enrollment in the Adult Education Program is more than double that of last year, for over eighteen thousand men and women are now taking advantage of courses offered by this program. Approxi- matey half of these people are registered in one or more of the eighty-six national defense classes, and half are in the one hundred twenty-seven general adult groups. These classes required a staff of one hundred thirty-five teachers. National defense instructors were largely obtained from North American, Douglas, Northrop, and Vultee aircraft companies, where they were either supervisors, foremen, or lead men. National defense classes are of two kinds: pre-employment, for persons who either are not employed or are employed in non-defense work: and supplementary classes, open only to men and women who are already employed in aircraft or sub- sidiary factories. Over thirty-five hundred men and women have received employment as a result of training in the pre-employment classes. Classes are maintained at adult education centers in Inglewood High School. Leuzinger High School, and Nelson Hall in Hawthorne, as well as in numerous elementary schools and churches. A new shop building was erected on the Inglewood campus, and in this building as well as at Leuzinger High School and at a rented building at 5 70 Acacia Street, Hawthorne, the Federal government has installed machinery to the value of $202,700. In response to the community need over forty classes in Red Cross First Aid have been established, and over thirteen hundred persons have been given this training. Forty more classes are being held for training people in Civilian Protection. Adult courses are in operation twenty-four hours a day. and a number of them run six days a week. An extensive summer session program is planned in which the number of classes will exceed those now in operation. The entire expense of national defense and general adult classes, both in the regular school term and in the summer session, is paid from either Federal or State funds. 29
