Lavvson. Blanche E. Runswick. Edna A. Nash — Secretaries. Enrollment in the Adult Education Program for the year was over 8,000. of whom over 2.000 were enrolled in National Defense classes. There was a total of 168 classes, of which 45 were regular evening classes, 53 special day classes and 70 National Defense classes. Of the 76 teachers in Na- tional Defense 68 were either supervisors, foremen, or lead men from North American, Douglas, Northrop, Vultee, or Olmstead Stiles aircraft plants. National Defense classes are of two kinds: pre-employment, for persons eighteen years of age or older who are not employed or who wish to learn a trade necessary in the natiotial defense; and supplementary, classes open only to men and women who are already employed in aircraft or subsidiary factories. Over three hundred persons have received employment as a result of training in the pre-employment classes alone. An entire building at 548-570 Acacia Street in Hawthorne has been rented by the District and is used wholly for defense training. Classes are now operated from 9:00 A. M., through the day and all night until 7:00 A. M. All of the expense of national defense classes is paid from either Federal or State funds.
