The Vikings were originally members of Scandi- navian bands of sea rovers between the 700’s and 1100’s. They explored and settled Greenland and Iceland. They were a Nordic people and were the ancestors of the Norwegians today. The Vikings were adventurous people who loved war and fighting. They were skillful, daring, and the most efficient shipbuilders in Europe. Their ships carried raiding parties to most of the known world, as well as across the Atlantic to the unknown world. It is possible that the term viking came from the old Norse word vik, meaning bay or inlet. They were also called Norsemen. Northmen, or Danes. Some Icelandic sagas tell of Viking voyages to America. Leif Ericson was one of the first men to land on the North American continent. Ericson left Greenland in about AD 1000, sailing toward the mainland of America. Upon landing on the continent, he named it Vinland. The ruings of a Viking settlement that was found may be the remains of Ericson’s colony. It was found in the early 1960’s in Newfoundland. The Vikings were daring explorers as well as fierce fighters. Their exploits were more daring and colorful than any other in the Viking period. PAST PRESENT I Vikings 193
