Aug.-Scpt. Living out of trunks, suitcases, and boxes became a way of life for the 927 IU students in temporary housing at the beginning of the fall semester. Because of severe overcrowding in residence halls, the main lounges and recreation rooms of many dorms were used to accomodate the overflow of students. The Poplars Research and Convocation Center, the Indiana Me- morial Union and Memorial Hall were also converted to residence facilities. Privacy was a problem, and according to Don Tarkington, living in Wilkie lounge, Many people would just walk right in without considering that this was my living quarters. Within 4 to 5 weeks, however, most of the students in temporary housing found permanent accomodations. — Vicki Furhmann I.U. Calendar
