Yes, Virginia, people procrastinated even way back then. In seventy-five years things haven't changed so much. You still see beards on campus, and the courtship process is as active as in '94 when courting was carried on quite extensively . . . and many of the boys got their wives here. There have been a few pleasing innovations like the raising ofskiit lengths, drive-in theatres, air- conclitioned classrooms, and Bo McMillan and john Pont. But the peoplwthe students, the faculty, the administration-are basically the same. The 1968 Arbutus may have colored pictures instead of wood- cuts, but the Hu'-flung University community of today will cher- ish the book as a souvenir of the happy years spent at the uni- versity, just as the handful of students and faculty did in 1894. And so we of the 75th anniversary Arbutus feel, as the editors of the original felt, if we teach anybody something he didn't know before, or if we coax a smile into the sad face of one poor soul, we will feel well repaid for all our toil. The school year did bring one distinction as the united classes of '94 published an annual called the Arbutusf' Even though Birdsill's ode to the trailing Arbutus on the open- ing page ofthe 1894 book was a bit sentimental: Out of thy Blossoms a shrine we make, Out of thy perfume a mem'ry we take, Years but strengthen our love for theeg Hail to thee, trailing Arbutus. the editors were not without a sense of humor. An excerpt from the preface to the 1894 Arbutus reads: With the characteristic modesty of '94 . . . It fills our hearts with pride in advance when we hear, in our mincl's ear, all our old friends saying, 'It's the most complete and artistic annual ever issued here. And we are not wonying ourselves because it is the tirstf Commenting further on the quality of the book, the editors say The book, to careless observers, may bear the earmarks of work hastily done, but we can say sincerely that we began to write it over four weeks before sending Litj to press.
