Sports I0 In the good old days the basketball season started soon after the football season ended, as the hardwood captain fwho might have been the gridiron captain as welll passed the word that there would be scrimmage in the gym. The whole sports program was rather informal fthough the dapperly-striped basketball player of '09 might have had a very formal part-down- t.he-middle hair stylej, and such Cashouse Gang antics as 1938 football Coach Page's tactical bombing might have prompted a commentator in the sports scene to see athletics as going to the dogs. But there was always a revival when athletic fortunes were at a low ebb. In the 1918 Arbutus a New Era was ushered in: Indiana's athletic teams are no more in the class where they are content with almost winning-they have the taste ofvictory . . And doesn't that sound famil- iuri' But through the winning, and the boasting about it 1Captain Sauer would dot? his shower cap to the swimming team of todayj, and the losing, and the proverbial Wait 'til next year, the I.U. student, both as fan and participant, has always been deeply involved in athletics. The stadiums get bigger each year Qjust like the playersj, and Hoosier Hysteria and the chant- ing roar of Col Col Col have been, and always will be, part of the winning tradition of the most enthusiastic student body in the entire Midwest.
