xM za Ci 61.7, ,YNQN W gm 8 -4 Battery F of Bloomington, World War I-1918 I.U. students have always had a peculiar knack for having the enthusiasm to keep things rolling-be they horse-drawn caissons or big red balls. In the critical years ofthe two World Wars the entire campus rallied. There were send-offs at the Monon depot for the soldiers of Battery F and many of the campus physical facilities were geared to aid the military fcheck the sailois wait- ing for chow at MRCD. Such mass support is reflected in the 1918 Arbutus, dedicated To the brave men of Indiana who love their country more than knowledge, more than life. Today, such statements of patriotism have given way to the questioning, critical college groups shouting Hell no, we won't gol But parents, don't despair. Even back in 1895 the kids were rebelling. As the Arbutus says, 'There is an ever present, but, fortunately, small class who 'kick' at everything merely for the sake of 'kickingf and whose Hrst impulse toward any project is unreasoning opposition. So long as there is youth, there will be restlessness and perhaps even demonstrations. Still, the average college student of today sits in the Commons Qjust as his counterpart did in the old Uni- versity Cafeteria. Check those shadesj otf-handedly discussing everything from Vietnam to vegetable soup. There are passive signs of national spirit-the flag in the cafeteria, for example. But it is only in times of war or perhaps on Purdue weekends that the college-joe actively gives vent to his emotions.
