Writing Checks XYhether trotting through late registration. cool- ing their heels in bookstore lines, or inching through the Activities Fair Mobs. students last Septemher kept a firm grip on plaid and pin- striped checkbooks. Most students registered hy phone for fall classes last spring. but the freshmen didnt have it so easy. Registration moved to Briscoe Quad in july for freshmen who could come to campus then, hut tht-re were the inevitable stragglcrs-mostly out-of- state freshmen and last-minute transfers-who keep supermarket registration in the Old Fieldhouse from dying out completely. Buying books for classes was as frustrating and almost as expensive as registering for them. Bar- gain hunters rummaged through stacks of hooks looking for doodle-less texts and red-vested clerks, who were nowhere to be found. And there was never a dull moment for the un- wary freshmen who heard all the pitches, signed numerous application, and wrote many checks at the Activities Fair.
