cyclists seek soggy victory SPURRED ON by the gleam of the winner ' s trophy, this year ' s cycling teams pedaled into action as the crack of a pistol opened the 1964 Little 500. Tension rose and cinders flew as the teams tirelessly ground out lap after lap, seemingly oblivious to pos- sible danger. The spectators were near frenzy as Beta Theta Pi flashed across the finish line seconds ahead of last year ' s victors, the SAE ' s. Exhausted but elated, the team submitted to the traditional soggy ritual — a thorough dunking. 25

tales of mini-ha-ha delight racing fans MINI MADNESS began as early as April, when the sororities and women ' s housing units selected their teams of riders. The teams practiced several hours a night on oversized tricycles until the day before the race. The theme of the Mini Parade was Mini Ha Ha, with each entry portraying a fairy tale or nursery rhyme and centering around the traditional emphasis on scholarship. But the parade could not break the ten- sion that weeks of practice had built. Each race lasted about forty to fifty sec- onds, and in that time there was heart- break or happiness for the anxious riders and their backers. Within a few hours, the winning team was joyously celebrat- ing; losers looked to the next Mini. 26
