Two hundred buildings ... set in 1,700 acres of Hoosier hills. Thirteen thousand students and 800 faculty memijers ... in a compact commu- nity. The commimity gro s. . . . This year Ernie Pyle Hall was dedicated. The Jortlan Hall of Biology, Marrietl Student .Apartments, and Law Build- ing are under construction now. The next few years will probably see a new Humanities Building, additions to the Library, Swain Hall, Chemistry Building, and the Music Building. We engage in a collective struggle called learning. Otu- weapons are books. They come in assorted sizes, but the thickness of the volume is seldom an indicator of the power it possesses. We keep them dog- eared and well iniderlined if - ve vant them to be effective. We load them with mar- ginal notes. We take them apart, sentence by sentence, so that we can be familiar vith their workings. We inspect the facts they are made of for fla vs vhich might cause them to misfire. Our generals are teachers. Ihey map our strategy and show us how to use our weapons against oin enemy, ignorance. They help us to discipline otn minds into well-ordered lines but also free them from old habits which would make them easy prey to the enemy. They re vard our efforts with diplomas. Our morale is kept high by performances of great artists. Their talent is the medium through ' hich we achieve the inspiration to continue to struggle. We applaud them and retinn to otu work more confident be- cause we have seen that victory is possible. 21
