He engaged in tentative con- versations with them. He felt shy when talking to strangers, but he felt relieved at finding someone in the same fix as he. He seemed brave when talking to other newcomers. He upheld his blase expression in the face of all surprises. Anything was better than to seem green. His curiosity was endless.
