p Arbutus Hill and The Arbutus Every Indiana student knows tlie delicate pink blossom of the arbutus, the University flower; and lie knows, too, tiie big wooded hill ofi to the east which is the the one place in Indiana made fragrant by its spicy sweetness. But it may be interesting to some to learn that the ' trailing arbutus, ' or ' ground laurel, ' was first found here by Professor Hermann B. Boisen in the fall of 1877. He did not recognize it, howe er. as the New England ' Ma flower ' until the following spring, when a cluster in full bloom was shown him. He then declared it to be ' the arbutus, the dearest of all flowers. ' He christened the hill on which it was found, ' Arbutus Hill, and during the remainder of his life he considered this spot the choicest ti easure of Indiana ' s natural beauty. Dr. Jordan writes; ' I should be glad to see the Arbutus Hill and its discover) ' always associated with the name of the prt)fessor who, more than an ' other, appreciated its beauties and rejoiced in the fragrance of the little flower which the vanishing glaciers left behind.
