h M oriam ( ) ALL of us at Indiana University, Mrs. Kirby was the ideal counselor, constantly a ailable for help and in- formation. There behind the big dignified desk, await- ing your visit, Mrs. Kirby usually had the needed solution to your problems in her head or at least in the top desk drawer. Friendly, helpful, efficient, s ' m- pathetic — her ery being suggested to students that Indiana Uni ersity was a good place in which to li e and work. But all these qualities which the students remem- ber so well grew out of another one that thsy did not so readily observe, the keen, clear-cut intelligence which was always at work behind the scenes. Es- sentially Mrs. Kirby was an intellectual person. She sohed all her j roblems that way. yoms as well as her own — not by emotion but by the application of precise reasoning, the careful sifting of the pros and cons of the situation to the inevitable conclusion. And if the conclusion was not too pleasant, she took it in hand, stressing its most attracti e features and tlirow- ing the best possible light on the whole thing. Before you knew it. things were mo ing in the right direc- tion. Her personal life was an intellectual life too. She read everything. She had as many interests as friends and she saved the best of what she heard or read to meet the particular interests of her friends; therefore they always enjoved her companv. Vou and I talk about the more nebulous qualities of friendship and loyalties, but Mrs. Kirby ' s formida was quite simple. She had taught herself to find and enjoy the best qualities of all her friends, of you and me, and of all the men and women she knew. Because of this, Mrs. Kirby, who was often alone, was never lonely. All of us lived actively in her mind, and she therefore will continue to li e in ours. LS ■ Y
