Dr. Coulter has been called the most celebrated China- man in North America. Besides having a membership in nearly every botanical organization in the country, he is a member of the Linnaean Society of London, and of the Botanical Societies of Belgium and Russia. A few years ago, he was elected one of the three American members of the International Committee on Botanical Nomenclature. In 1875 he founded, and is now editor of, the Botanical Gazette, the leading American journal of botany. He has published several noted books, giving the results of botan- ical research. In 1893, Dr. Coulter accepted the Presi- dency of Lake Forest University. THE PRESENT HPRESIDENT. JOSEPH SWAIN, LL. D. President Swain is a native of Indiana, born at Pendle- ton, june 16, 1857, and a graduate of Indiana University. He was Professor of Applied Mathematics here for many years, and resigned in 1891, to accept a similar position at Leland Stanford, Ir., University. Upon the resignation of Dr. Coulter, there was a general movement in favor of Professor Swain as his successor. The Board of Trustees were but a short time in making the selection. President Swain has traveled a great deal, both in America and Europe, and is eminently qualiiied to 'dll his present position. He is an earnest adherent of the elective system established by President Jordan. He enjoys the confidence and loyalty of the students to a remarkable degree, and is much esteemed and loved by all who know him.
