To the surprise of the actor-director, Mr. Kincaid, the Senior Class Play, A Pennant for the Kremlin, was a smashing sucess. The action began when an eccentric millionaire died and left the Chicago White Sox to the Russian Government. Starring In the play were Doug Lovett, a player for the White Sox; Rob Mayer, the Russian chair- man of the team; Pam Reusser, the daughter of the chairman; and Bob Marx as the team ' s manager. For the benefit of those In the audi- ence who were conditioned to watching television, commercials were shown featuring Dave Doyle and Dave Plump. The Indian Hill Rangers wouldn ' t handle It this way! Students who wear boots are bound to get into trouble. Murder Makes for a Captive Audience Reserve Two for Murder was the most unusual play ever presented by Indian Hill students. The unique performance was equalled only by its dra- matic advertising: displaying a hanged man drip- ping blood into the school garden. The play began normally, but was interrupted when a member of the audience murdered one of the actors. The po- lice were called in and everyone was ordered not to leave the auditorium. As detectives tried to solve the case, they asked the audience to vote on who did the murder; however, the plot was so intricate that the revelation of the killer was a complete sur- prise. Miss Selzer outdid herself in this startling selection, and the Juniors presented the difficult production with great skill. Abracadabra, alakazam! Gee, he disappeared at re- hearsal. 21 Pow Wow ' 68 Spotlight on Music On goodum day we sellum five or six rug. Japanese manu- facturer keepum well supplied. My or black gymmers were about thils long. Pow Wow ' 68, Spotlight on Music. featured the usual singmgand dancing, but spiced up the performance with a series of short skits on the always controversial subject of politics. In a parody of the Huntley-Brinkley News Broadcast, Doug Lovett and Randy Shepard gave the audience so me insight into the ways and wiles of election year politics, plus some provocative material for thought. (Before you saw the Pow Wow, had you ever considered Ethel Kennedy ' s outstanding qualifications for Secretary of Labor?) In two short hours one learned of the reactions of various ordinary citizens such as an Indian chief, a farmer, a former President, and Maudie Frickerttothe upcoming political contest. And . . . commercials so that the audience would feel at home. The Horse Chorus returns! 23 24 Becky Ahmann. Mike Haggerty, and Chorus presented a dramatic reading of Don Brown ' s Body which told of the disadvantages of murder at the YMCA. This year saw the addition of a balance beam routine, a parallel bars exhibition, and a sword dance to the program. Mr. Snapp and Mr. Kincaid combined the standard features of Pow Wow with new ideas and came up with an extravaganza of talent. 23 I lost my what!? Casey Connell at the bat. See the freshmen grunt and tug. 26 Olympic Day Survives Rain Clouds, Broken Rope, and Damaged Tricycles Yes siree, folks! Again this year IH indulged in the super-groovy, fantabulous Olympic Day. Anxiously awaited by both faculty and students alike, the big day arrived trailing clouds of possible rain. However, the rams held off and the juniors ran, tricycled, jumped, and rolled their way to victory to the overwhelming dismay of the saddened seniors. Notwithstanding their severe disappointment, the seniors managed to tie the faculty in the annual baseball game. A new event, the toilet paper race, was added and transformed the athletic field into the city dump. Lyn Bidwell and Jack Martin kept their title as champion EggTossers as they tied for first place, and extended their winning streak to three years. As usual, the rope in the tug-of-war broke, spilling junior and senior girls all over the ground . another delightful Indian Hill Tradition. But perhaps the most absorbing activity of the day was cataloguing which teachers wore shorts . Enjoy your rope burns, girls! Ah, the sweet taste of victory! 27 A Presidential An Impressive Mrs. Wirthlln recognized IH ' s 28 Scholarat Indian Hill — Climax To This Year ' s Recognition On May 29 the entire student body and faculty gathered in the gymnasium to honor those students who had achieved a degree of excellence. Marta Casse. our Argentine exchange student, opened the assembly. Awards were given for artistic, musical, athletic, and scholastic achievement and also for service to the school and the community. Books were presented by Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Williams Colleges to the junior boy of their choice. Music was provided by the Choir under the direction ofMr. Cox. Coach Clark presented Mr. Ed Kinney a gift to showtheschool ' s recognition of Mr. Kinney ' s excellent tenure as basketball coach. The highlight of the assembly came when Mr. Meabon announced that Judy Arms, Senior Class Valedictorian and National Merit Scholar, had been selected as one of 121 Presidential Scholars. Assembly distinguished artists. Pitt Curtiss - Outstanding Senior Athlete Pam Ventress - Outstanding Senior Athlete 29 Mr. Hugh Meabon. Principal Mr. Charles Selzer, Assistant Principal Principal Hugh Meabon came to Indian Hill this year from Brecksville, Ohio, where he was the principal of the junior high school. Mr. Meabon has made it his goal to become familiar with all aspects of the school system and the community so that he can better direct the school and communicate with the students. Mr. Selzer aids Mr. Meabon in the demanding job of keeping the high school in order and is also m charge of the Indian Hill Summer School. Dr. James Sailer joined the Indian Hill Administration in 1963 as principal of the high school. He remained as principal until 1966 when he took over the post of superin- tendent. In this capacity, he is responsible for coordinating the activities of all of the schools in the Indian Hill district, and insuring the smooth operation of all facets of the chool system. Mr. Moran, Assistant Superintendent, oversees the running of the buses and the maintenance of all school buildings. scf 32 Three different groups of people are very important to the functioning of the high school. These groups are the Boosters, the Parent-Teacher Association, and the Board of Education. The Boosters help to finance school activities, such as Boys ' State. Girls ' State, and AFS, and provide someone else to turn to when an organization needs encouragement and support. The P.T.A. promotes cooperation between parents and faculty, operates the Book Store, conducts Open House and College Night, sponsors the Scholarship Banquet, and finances AFS. This year the P.T.A. promoted and conducted several informative workshops on the subject of drug addiction. The Board of Education meets regularly to determine the policies of the school system and the place of the schools in the community. Dr. James Sailer. Superintendent Mr. Carl Moran. In October, the Class of ' 68 presented A Pennant for The Kremlin, complete with commercials I may have bad breath, but you have BO! The Senior Class continued to endear itself to the school throughout November and December with tardy slips and fraternity jackets. In February, the class presented the Basketball Homecoming with the theme of Camelot ironically, Camelot was the lunchroom. As winter dragged on. the class was really restless, and those last three months seemed unbearable , , Students may wear boots to school and home from school, but not during school. The prom provided a much-needed relief It ' sa curious phenomenon that so many of the seniors are sick on the Monday after Prom. The end of May and senior exams with the triumph of being out of school before the underclassmen. Finally, Baccalaureate Graduation Goodbyes. The club has started a songbook which they hope will be continued each year. The mam production of the year was a Hootenanny held on April 5. Master and Mistress of Ceremony wereTom Sheehy and Ann Michaelis. The Hootenanny featured the P. B.F.C. and solos by Dave Rodgers, Sue Pitcairn. Becky Ahmann, and Mike Haggerty. Meetings of the club were always exciting Hey, get the President out of the closet! So Mr. Hippie ' s finally going to do a solo Somebody stole the Hootenanny posters! . . . The IH Art Club, sponsored by Mrs. Wirthlin, decorated the hallowed halls of the high school at Christmas time. Several members of theclub, notably Beth Bevis, Durf Sheehy, and Diane Haas, distinguished themselves by winningawards in various city art shows. ArtClub 82 The Girls ' Glee Club is an excellent music group. The Glee Club qualified for state competition and received a superior rating. Under the direction of Mr. Cox, the group shows more promise every year. Also under the direction of Mr. Benjamin Cox, the Indian Hill High School Choir has achieved a fine reputation in both district and state competition. In April, having qualified for state competition, the Choir traveled to Columbus, where they received an excellent rating. The group presented several concerts, and also sang at Baccalaureate and Recognition Day ceremonies. Girls ' GleeClub Choir ■ t- ; ;.c ' i .-:.tv : ' ;:v?.i ft ' .j r ' . ri - ;; - ' v , , ■r-:i... Yet. somehow, Mr. Snapp accomplishes the difficult task by having the Band attain new honors and achieve new heights of performance. The Band received excellent ratings in every competition it participated in this year, and has received an invitation to perform with the Cincinnati Bengals next fall. Although losmg to Madeira in one meet, the team was the first runner-up in a meet of schools at Princeton, and took first place m a triangular meet with Wyommgand Mt. Healthy. The majority of the girls are underclassmen so the outlook IS bright for another good team next year. TheTennis Team, coached by Miss T. L. Shelton. finished the season with a record of four wins and two losses. Led by seniors Pam Ventress, Laurie Riecks. and Cindy Stowell. the team faced stiff competition from schools in this area, but by careful and strategic playing, managed to win strong victories. A new program of tennis intramural playing had its beginnings this year. The members of the Tennis Team coached the intramural players to the delight of Miss Shelton. Both tennis groups got in a lot of practice and fun with this arrangement. The Golf team, coached by Mrs. J. Weisberger, had a very short season. The team of Susie Montgomery, Beth Delaplaine, Carol Muzzo, and Cathy Campbell lost to Hillsdale in the first match. However, in the Wyoming Invitational, the team of Susie Montgomery, Beth Delaplaine, Cathy Campbell, and Patti Pater took a third place out of fifteen teams participating. B, Kreger, B. Delaplaine. Soon, however, we found out what a stream of technicalities are involved in making up this final product. All of you who think that this yearbook just throws itself together, think again! You have never known real despair until you ' ve tried to fit eight pictures (one with eighty people to identify) and a paragraph of copy (about some organization you ' ve never even heard of) into some sort of order to get an acceptable page arrangement. There may not be realms of talent in this book, but there is blood, sweat, and tears. We want to thank Mrs. Crawford, who so cheerfully and kindly put up with our mistakes, Mr. Dick Chiara. who attended so many Saturday morning get-togethers. Mr. Pat McKenrick and Mr. Al Hartman. who consistently provided high-quality photography work, and Mrs. Crawford ' s fifth period study hall, who identified so many group pictures. In Legend ' 68, we have tried to convey a sense of the growth and progress of Indian Hill High School. Progress is present m many forms classroom and library expansion a new emphasis in curriculum on independent study and research new methods of solvingold problems — computerized report cards and a la carte lunchlines. The school must unceasingly strive to keep abreast of the changmgconditionsof these times and also to provide an efficient way to educate young people in the basic subjects. Often these goals are in conflict with one another. But, out of their conflict, comes Progress a new order created out of the best processes of the old. At Indian Hill there was growth and progress. However, the national scene presented a bleak picture. The government came under violent criticism and civil disobedience was frequent. Disillusionment and disgust permeated the college campuses. The war in Viet Nam was brought home to us more each day. 1968 was a year of international monetary crisis, rioting, crime increase, assassinations, and war. Frisch ' s But no generalities can define a year a year is a kaleidoscope of personal impressions . newspaper headlines . politickingand protesting . . televised funerals a pile of homework a football touchdown .. . Christmas vacation short skirts a favorite class morningannouncements Here we ' ve tried to preserve these impressions. Dave Plump, Editor-in-Chief Suzy Baker, Copy Editor Time it was, And what a time it was. It was A time of Innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago It must be . I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They ' re all that ' s left you. Paul Simon
