UEUIC w,,, rv Nur, With heartfelt gratitude and appreciation, we, the Studen t Body of Ignacio High School, dedicate this yearbook to our former Superintendent, MR, CHESTER A, WAY. Through his untiring efforts from 1946 to August 1948, the five school Districts were united to become District 11. Under his guidance, the building that we proudly call L H, S, became a reality in 1950. Though Mr. Way is no longer with us, we believe that this building and this dedication will remain a permanent memorial to him. Iregret that my associations with you have been for only one year. However, the progress you make in the years to come will not go by without attracting the attention of those who have worked with you in school. El 5' B. E. Cross, Superintendent PRINCIP L' MESSAGE MR. ROBERT STEIGE Life is a continuous process of making adjustments in order to cope with the challenging problems created by society being in a state of constant tran- sition as a result of a changing world. Seldom have more confused and criti- cal circumstances faced the 'world than at present. A terrific responsibility must be borne by every good citizen. Your school is ever attempting to pre- pare its students to meet this responsibility by providing a broadened and en- riched curriculum and an extensive extra-curricular program for the develop- ment of well rounded individuals who will have the mental abilities and the moral aptitudes to meet life's problems adequately. It is my sincere hope that the Ignacio High School this year has been of some small service in helping its students in their development of well inte- grated personalities so that they may meet the challenges of a changing world successfully. 'E'-QS K.5 . ur J C'l t fee? P, ,ns r V' - - :Qs ' '-Tin! 'S-i'r T' E l0R CLASS PINIPHECY wnilerakingaworld tour, we happened to hear of Stanley I-'rost,one of our former Seniors, in Soviet Russia. What we learned was that Stanley was the Chief of the Soviet Secret Police. We conducted a search and found him near the Kremlin directing a firing squad. Down on his knees pleading for mercy was Dean Pennell, a Buddist Missionary from India. Succeeding in talking Comrade Frost out of shoot- ing his former Comrade Senior, we watched Dean drag his Budda image out of Russia. Forever onward to Japan we discovered two more former classmates, newly married, too. Running a flourishing silk worm farm in Tokyo are Howard and Kay Reider. Kay is the former Kay Lunsford. They are very happy in their work and sooo much in love! They have everything, including plenty of silkworms. Leaving Japan we treked on down to India. In the main street of Calcutta we spotted Yvonne Cruz. She was prodding a stubborn Brahma bull down to the city slaughter house so she could get meat to fatten up her husband, Dick Olbert. She is at the end of the rope- -killing a sacred animal for a man. In leaving Calcutta we sighted a huge mansion on a hill. Out of sheer curiosity we walked up to see who owned it. We found out soon enough who it belonged to. In big, gaudy, gold letters, the sign on the gate read: RESIDENCE OF DONALD WALTON. Recognizing the name of another of the '54 Sen- iors, we went up to the door after crawling over the gate. We hunted down a crowbar and finally suc- ceeding in lifting and dropping the massive brass knocker. Who should answer the door but Richard Briggs, dressed as a butler. At first we didn't recognize him because he had his nose so high in the air. But he recognized us by the hayseed in our hair and took us in to see his master and new mistress, the former Joann Rollman. Joann had been a prosperous dope and diamond smuggler in Hong Kong. Here she had met Donald who was AWOL from the U. S. Infantry, and together they had escaped tolndia where Donald was putting Joann's enormous wealth to use. Saying good-bye to our former classmates, we motored to the coast where we took a boat to Africa. Having the urge to see darkest Africa we joined a safari and came across a part of a pigmy tribe. We asked to speak with the Chief, and who should appear but Cecil Bragg. A pint-sized Cecil, who had been shrunken by a witch doctor for capturing pigmies to use as guinea pigs in his laboratory. From here we swam up the Nile River for a little exercise and wound up in Cairo, Egypt. From there we went over to Istanbul. We needed a little relaxation so we went to a dimlit, out-of-the-way tavern. There was a floor show on, and guess who should be the feature attraction but Ruth Atencio. She was introducing the Bunny-I-lop to the Turks. She always did have dancing feet. We then took a row boat up the Adriatic Sea to Venice, Italy. Here we found Ivan Palmer as the captain of his own ship--a Gondola for water Taxij. His new career was rowing people up and down the streets of Venice. He had given up his career as a professional basketball player to marry an Italian girl and own his own water taxi. He always did want to be a SAILOR? Leaving Venice and Ivan, we skied over the Alps to Paris, France. Having a mania for ballet danc- ing, we went to a ballet school where we encountered Malcolm Jones doing a clumsy Dance of the Swan. We never thought Mal had the ability to ballet dance--and we were right. We hitch-hiked through France from Paris to Madrid, Spain. Here we attended a bullfight. Oh, what a handsome bullfighterl We looked a little closer, and even fell down into the bull ring trying to get a better look. Finally we figured out why he was so dashing. The bull was after him. No, nol --it was because he was one of our '54 I. H. S. Seniors, Sephy Martinez. After being presented with an ear each, from the slaughtered bull, we bade Sephy l-Iasta La Vista' and left, seeing him surrounded by dead bulls. From Spain we took a Ferry Boat to the Netherlands. we traveled inland to the city of Rotterdam. Here we found a Senior of '54, Louise Martinez, as the owner of a huge factory. Oh, nol She has in- vented snythetic tulip bulbs and is putting them on the market. She had often rattled on to us about in- venting something, but-but we never dreamed .... After this shock we slipped over the border to get away from Louise and stopped in Hamburg, Ger- many. We followed this huge crowd down the street to see what inthe world was so interesting in the E l0R PROPHECY C0 'I'. market square. They all seemed to be stopping in front of a little stand in the street. Then we smelled it! American hamburgers! Then we saw it! The proprietor of the stand was George Bryan! He always did have a shrewd business mind. He was introducing a food named for the town .... hamburgers in Ham- burg. He was too busy to talk so we plowed ourselves through the crowd, still amazed at George. We traveled on to the shores of the Baltic Sea. From here we took a fishing boat to Copenhagen, Denmark. In looking over the waterfront, we witnessed a man being thrown out of a bar. His wife came out behind him, yelling at him to get back to work grinding snuff. The bum-snuff grinder just happened to be Jakie Moss. He explained to us why he had been thrown out of the bar. He had become an addict to snuff through the years, and was trying to start other people chewing snuff so that his business would boom. Naturally, we took out. We couldn't see ourselves chewing snuff. Deciding we needed some good wholesome mountain air, we travelled on up to Stockholm, Sweden, and from there on up into the mountains. Here we were to board with an old maid for a new days. When we reached the cottage, who should be the old maid but Alice Walker! Here alone in the mountains she earned her living by milking goats and making cheese and butter to sell in the city. We didn't worry though, because our handsome guide had a wolfish glint in his eyes on the day we left, so we knew that Alice wouldn't be an old maid much longer. We then hopped a floating iceburg that was on its way to Iceland. But when we got ready to stop, we remembered that there were no brakes to stop with! So into the coast we smashed, so hard that we were thrown head first into an igloo. We were thawing ourselves out by the fire when we heard some hoops and hollers of delight. We peered out and spied four fur covered objects dragging a whale after them. We started to run and then discovered they were humans. In fact, we discovered they were old classmates---Jackie Sanchez, Phylis Martinez, and Lena Lopez. You guessed it. They are professional whale hunters. we stayed for a blubber supper and then got out ---- fast! We bordered one of their pet whales, sailed down to England, and traveled across the mainland to Liverpool. Here we attended a game of Rugby fEnglish Football! at the Liver-Pool. We bought us a big orange and stared at the big, red-headed fullback. He was infallible! l-Ie was Lord-Duke Irvin Potter of Liver-Pool, formerly star of the I. H. S. football team of '54, After he had won the game, we tried to get his autograph, but we soon found out that Royalty does not speak to commoners. Having a little excess money from our trip, we rented a pilot and jet place to take us to the U. S. A. The plane was having a hard time getting off the ground so we ventured into the cockpit to ask the pilot what was wrong. And what should be sitting at the controls but a blonde woman pilot, who looked very much like Joyce Massingill. Why, it WAS Joyce! She had all the controls turned on, but evidently had forgotten all about taking off, while she gazed into the windshield applying lipstick and powdering her nose. We gave her a rude awakening, but she soon regained her composure and told us that she had left modeling school to become a hot rod jet pilot. She turned around for the take-off at last, and as we pick- ed our teeth out of the control board, we arrived in the U. S. As we staggered off the plane at La Guardia Air Field in New York, we were stuck-up---we mean held up---by a gang of gunmen. They drug us into a helicopter and swished us to their hide-out at the top of the Empire State Building. They threw us in the door, where their gang leader--who else but Dick Chandler--was lounging in luxury. And who was that beside him? Why, it was Betty lean Engler, now Mrs. Dick Chandler! They were the leaders of the largest syndicate in New York. They had ordered their men to capture us because they wanted us to join their ring. We didn't Want to hurt their feelings, but we certainly didn't want to become gangsters, either. So after talking a couple of hours, they agreed to go sn-aight and not to shame the old class of '54 any more. So, after being all around the world to see our old classmates, we started on the last lap of our journey. Home to dear old Ignacio. And what are we doing with ourselves? Oh, we live together in a small house here in Ignacio, with plenty of dogs, cats, and horses. We make our weekly trips to Durango and once in a while we even get a male suitor ..... our plans of being business career girls didn't seem to work out.
