HISTORY OF HYDE PARK HIGH Hyde Park High School, second oldest in Chicago, sprang into being with none of the ceremony that has accompanied the dedication of later, far less conspicuous, institutions of learning. Today's great school, with its 4,000 students, its faculty of more than 125 teachers, and more than 30 student organizations, can be traced back to a few advanced courses offered in the curriculum of Kenwood Grammar School. These courses were left for selection of the individual student if he wished to continue with school. Hyde Park High received its first impetus in 1871, the year of the Chicago fire, when young Pliny N. Haskell became principal of Kenwood School. Prompted by his New England love of learning, Haskell had the vi11age fathers provide an assistant instructor who was especially suited to teach in the clas- sical and other departments. The high school was dignified with quarters of its own When by 1872 a new wing was added to the grammar school building. In 1873 the first senior class, consisting of two women, was graduated. Haskell resigned as principal to study law, and the high school continued developing slowly, graduating Classes of less than ten students. In 1893 Wil- liam Henry Ray became principal; and during his six year tenure he added to the back bone provided by Haskell, a curriculum that compared favorably with any institution of the time. The former classical departments became the more modern English, science, political economy, civics, and psychology. The faculty had expanded to four besides Mr. Ray, and in the fall of 1886 the school made the first of its momentous moves, by leaving the old Ken- wood building on Lake Park Avenue, with its grammar school associations, forever behind. This move, and the death of Mr. Ray, ended what might be called the rural chapter of the school's history. During the two year principalship of William McAndrew, Hyde Park, then the largest village in the county, was annexed to Chicago. In 1893, the school moved for the second time to the building known now as Ray Grammar School. Graduating began to assume its present aspect under the leadership of Charles W. French, author of Lincoln the Liberator, Rob and His Friends, and Black Beauty. The faculty had grown to twenty- five, and included Miss Mary B. Herrick, English instructor, Miss Agnes Eliza- beth Stuart, instructor in Greek and Latin, and first dean of girls, and Miss Florence E. Bigelow, art instructor. The students were beginning their club activities: the Ray Literary Society, the Glee Club, the Decorative Art Society, and the older Agassi Association, and the Athletic-Association. In 1884, '85, '86 the baseball team was victorious. Right after the tum of the century, the nationa1 championship football team, with Captain Walter Eckersa11, and including Thomas Hammond, formerly of the Whiting Corporation, and Bud Fischer, creator of Mutt and left, was victorious over all opponents. Similarvictories were enjoyed in baseball, basketbail, and track. Another all-round athlete of the time was Ralph Bard, stock broker, who was president of the Class of 1922 and captain of the football team of the same year. The 1921 city championship team was the first to be coached by Butch Scanlan. Among those who attended Hyde Park High are Amelia Earhart, Major Reed Landis, Milton Sills, and Mary Phibin. It has also been said that Mary Garden attended Hyde Park for a time, and as yet it has not been disproved. The most recent Hyde Parker to achieve fame is Mel Tormel Famous also is Arch Oboler, 1924 graduate of Hyde Park, now known for his radio and movie scripts and the producer of Bwana Devil, first full length three dimensional motion picture. It is certain that the great reputation and tradition of Hyde Park High School is sure to be carried on by the present and incoming students. 22
