N.APIERALSKI, B.S. in Engineering MUSIC AND ART Two of the courses offered at Hyde Park are designed to give some of that polish which combines with the three R's to make culture. One of these courses is music. It is clearly understood, of course, that some people can't carry a tune in a basket. But everyone can gain a knowledge and understanding of music. Some of the teaching is done by means of records. This is a painless means of teaching the elements of music, the sounds and uses of the various instruments-and the necessity of the inevitable scales. The students also put the theory of music into practice by singing many popular and semi-classical songs. Besides teaching and learning a lot of music in the classrooms, the teachers and students ofthe music department are also very active in most of the performances given at Hyde Park. Various choruses and orchestras par- ticipate in many assemblies, give performances for the P.T.A., and are important parts of 28 many shows. The climax ofthe music depart- ment's activities is reached in the Music Fes- tival, in which the whole music department unites to present a brilliant show. In the art department, also, one is recon- ciled to the fact that budding Rembrandts are rare. There are many phases to the art program-making masks, drawing plans for a future home, creating stage sets-orjust paint- ing plain pictures. But among all these activ- ities, everyone is bound to Hnd something that is to his liking. And there's method in the madness-for by coming into constant contact with all the phases of art, the Student is bound to learn to like and appreciate it. The art department, too, has many projects, and it turns out many prize-winning posters. For a good knowledge and appreciation of art and music, you will value and enjoy these two courses.
