MR. IRA VAN HISE Sufficient be it unto the day. The Branch may be small as compared to the Main, but it still keeps Mr. Ira Van Hise, its principal, busy every period of the day and then some. Besides keeping an eye on the affairs of the school and the executive staff, he has to take care of business affairs. Seeing a new batch of freshies every six months is perhaps a trying sight. However, Mr. Van Hise is doing a good job of recon- struction. Getting the freshies accustomed to the new and higher standards of high school life, Mr. Van Hise, who is well-liked, does everything possible to make the Branch a pleasant place to attend. The Branch is so small that everyone knows practically everyone else. It's really almost a family affair. But even a family has troubles, and it is a rare sight to see Mr. Van Hise patting fso to speak? a weeping mother on the shoulder. Ah, me! Like Atlas, Mr. Van Hise bears the weight of the world on his shoulders. 14 MR. JOHN R. SPECHT After the night cometh the dawn and all shall be peace ever after. From this famous quotation a most important factor of human nature can be learned. It is the inevitable truth that time waits for no one. With this in mind, Mr. John R. Specht was appointed assistant principal of Hyde Park. He has behind him an outstanding record, showing to the utmost his ingenious adaptation for organization, and though he has been here but three years, he has proved beyond a shadow of doubt his capability as to the aforementioned qualifications. As assistantprincipal, Mr. Specht keeps close watch on all school affairs to see that everything 'runs along smoothly. He is in charge of the grade advisers and helps them to correct any deficiencies in delinquent stu- dents. This may seem quite simple to the casual passerby, but much time, work, and effort are spent in preparation for adjust- ments. In closing, one may say that the position of assistant principal is well filled.

MR TOQEPH F. GONNELLY His tall, spare, frame, his snow-white hair and his purpose- ful stride all proclaim him for what he is-Mr. Joseph F. Gon- nelly, principal of Hyde Park High School. The word prin- cipal means many thingsg director of the faculty, head of the business department. and director of school affairs. So far so good. But Mr. Gonnelly has added something more to the title. To hundreds of Hyde Parkers it has come to mean also a friend. Papa joe likes to know about the student, as well as about what he does. It is no uncommon sight to see him cheering our football or basketball teams, in defeat as well as in victory. And when. in his powerful Voice, he speaks to the students at assemblies, you may be sure that he's heard with attention and respect. Visiting servicemen often 'Kdrop ini' on him, and he likes to talk and joke with them. Wlhen, on rare occasions, he appears proudly escorting his wife, there is universal satisfaction and pride. But it is always gratifying to know that Hyde Park is represented by a man like Mr. Gonnelly.
