Dean Marshall busted through the fence and went to Mullen where he swore the pastures were greener One of our bunch sa1d the grass wasn t a b1t greener and to prove lt he remarked that Joanne Albr1ght had come to Hyanms because lt was greener here Woodrow Moran got elected to be pres1dent and Robert Wealky took over the v1ce Helen Davls got to keep on gettmg th1ngs down 1n red and wh1te as secretary and Wayne Macomber got to be treasurer and feel the money for awh1le Ardo Volk took charge of th1ngs to see that nobody got hung up 1n a fence along the way Noth1ng much else happened because noth1ng much ever happens to Sophomores except that they dec1ded they were smarter than the Freshmen As jumors they went around feehng the1r oats once 1n awhrle Nobody has ever f1gured out why jumors l1ke to feel oats We ve all felt them and they don t feel l1ke nothmg but oats and oats don t feel l1ke much of any th1ng that IS worth spendxng t1me feehng ln fact a person can spend a lot of valuable t1me feelmg oats when he could be do1ng somethmg better Surely Bruce johnson got t1red of throw1ng balls at holes and M X went to Kemper lvhhtary Academy at Nevada MISSOUII There he 15 learn1ng how to stand up stra1ght wh1le walk1ng and th1ngs 'X l1ke th1S N th1ng about go west young man so he left Wh1tman and came west to Hyann1s 1n t1me to be a Jl11'110I' too Bob I-hte came here from Greely Colorado because he wanted to get 1n on the bull sl1ng1ng at the rodeos every fall He allowed as how the compet1t1on couldn t be any rougher than lt 15 1n colorful Colorado Hlte came saw and made pres1dent Bob Hungerford worked h1s way up and got a shot at the v1ce pres1dency Barbara l ' Bon1f1eld got the loan of Helen Dav1s penc1l and took over as Secretary his Helen Davls had wr1ter s cramps of the r1ght hoof and sa1d she -live wanted to feel the money for awh1le seemg as how jumors are fx always hoardmg the stuff W' 1 'Es R It was payday 1n the bunkhouse is ' 0 when we put on Aunt Samathy Rules the Roost Everybody was full of glee too because we made so much hay that we re st11l stay1ng up n1ghts try1ng to f1gure out whether to eat lt or spend lt Boys and G1rls County Government Day came around and we learned plenty Part of what we learned was that we don t know anymore about laws or what they re for than the regular off1cerS do mn fact we f1na1ly f1gured that we probably know less . . . . . . - I ,YN . . . , . . - 1 . . Tracks ofthe Herd of 52 Before the snow came around in 4-8 the herd that was due to be fence broke and shipped out in 52 got throwed together in a. pen at H H S They had their tails up and was running around bellering for everybody to look at how big they was which was about the time they got throwed and had the ' Freshman brand slapped onto their hides to show them they wasn t as big as they thought they was Folks who had figured there had ought to be a way to tell them apart gave them a bunch of names to prove they was registered stock So out of the ones who bellered the loudest at the branding one called Barbara Bonifield got picked to be the president One named janet Collins got to be a president too but they put vice on front of her title for some reason which ain t being put out r1ght now Helen Davis who likes to get things down in red and white can't be black and white them s Holsteins was secretary jim Wheelock who always said that veal regardless of price makes the best meat was the one they let take care of the money The other names on this registered stock was Dean Marshal Bob Hungerford Woodrow Moran Robert Weakly Wayne Macomber and jim Macomber After everybody got shoved 1nto the right feed pens the old ones just about ready to ship out Seniors got us mixed up in a d1pp1ng party that shoulda been for sheep Initiation they called it Enough eggs got busted on our backs to make us look like a flock y-, J,- of chickens was using us for a roost Some of us had to dance 4' the hula Looked kinda like a bunch of cows coming in at milking time a sort of Atlantic City beauty contest where the contestants had chipped in enough on the assets to double them the little heifers had started chewing the rag which is what women seem to prefer In the discussion it come up that schools were a lot like saddles a durn sight easier to get smart and ride in the saddle of education than it is to walk with boots on That s part of what we learned the first year During the second year we learned a whole lot more The rootin tootin cowhands Started to figure out what the girls were R for This news scared them out of three fourths of a year 5 growth which is why Sophomores always look so puny and be 6 wlldered Also Bruce johnson and Woodrow Moran got extra brand letters for running around in a corral that s got lines instead of fences and for throwing a ball at a hole up near the barn roof The only reason they were able to hit it is because the hole is bigger than the ball is XO.
