Act II Actwztzes LONGHORN STAFF Members of the Senior Class and an editor from each high school class prepared the 'layout for thls year s annual STUDENT COUNCIL Two representatives elected from each high school class organized a student council the second semester The following officers were elected John Martin pres ident Barbara Evert vxce president Helen Davis secretary and Janet Castle treasurer Mr Sommers is the sponsor of the group HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS The chorus composed of 12 girls and 4 boys has met twice each week with Mr Powell as director and pianist They participated in several programs this year pro viding entertainment at the Armistice Day and Christmas Party programs They dxd not attempt any very difficult music selecting popular or old favorites for most of their work The music was enjoyed by most of the students and it was nice to have music sounding in the building again HOMEMAKING CLASS For the past two years the homemakmg and normal training girls have held a tea during American Education Week xn November This year they held open house in order to show school patrons the new equipment supplxed by the Board of Education for their department Fifty two guests were welcomed during the week GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION This organization is a popular actlvxty among the high school girls Their sports are volleyball softball and a little basketball The past three years they have had competitive games scheduled with other schools in volleyball and softball During the 1948 1949 season they won all of their softball games with Bettie Bunner doing a fine Job of pitching and Miss Donna Jones coaching In all of their games during 1949 1950 they were wmners with Esther Varner and Louise Warner efficiently pitching and Mrs Volk successfully coaching They were wmners over Dunning in volleyball that spring also During the 1950 1951 season they had no softball games with other schools but con centrated on volleyball They lost to Melbeta 8 to ZZ won over Halsey 37 to 18 and beat Dun ning s team 40 to 39 High light of the year was winning first place trophy at the Sandhill Volley ball Tournament at Halsey on February 9 by defeating Anselmo 41 to Z4 Mullen 58 to 16 and coach Janiece Metcalf president Pat Varner vice president Esther Varner secretary and Janet Collins treasurer Girls who received letters are listed on the page of Honor Awards JUNIOR PEP CLUB Girls of the fifth through the eighth grades organized a Junior Pep Club in October 1949 with Miss Edith Durst as sponsor Officers elected were Kay Monahan presi dent Sandra Castle vice president Sharlene Hayward secretary treasurer and Lesley Hungerford reporter Cheerleaders were elected at try outs as follows Kay Monahan Sharon Thomas and Sharon Bestol The girls provided a cheering section for all grade games with other schools and were fine assistance in helping the high school club yell In the 1950 1951 season Miss Durst was again chosen sponsor Officers were Judy Ever.. president Sharon Thomas vice president Kleo Evert secretary treasurer and Ann Manning reporter Cheer leaders were elected as follows Sharon Bestol Sharlene Hayward Kleo Evert and Judy Evert LONGHORN PEPSTERS In the drama of our school lxfe the girls' Pep Club has always been a sure fire hit To increase our efficiency we organized with a written constitution and by laws ln the fall of 1947 choosing the name of Longhorn Pepsters Cheerleaders were Faye Blood Ana Davis Alice Greathouse and Shirley Bomfield Officers were Ana Davis president Alice Greathouse vice president Bettie Bunner secretary and Joan Perry treasurer Mrs Nxch Hayward was elected sponsor That year we adopted the School Plan of Curtis Circulation Company to solicit magazme subscriptions and earn funds for club expense We have continued this project for four years, realizxng mcreased profits each drive In addition to our regular pep rallies skits and attendance at all basketball games we entertained the Melbeta High School Students at a dancing party following their game with us on January 16 1948 High light of the year was the 38 I .
