WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER The class of '56 began their thirteen years of school life the day after Labor Day in 1943. Miss Dietz, our pretty kindergarten teacher, was our mother in school who saw that we took daily naps on our little rugs. We were so grown up! We had a grocery store, post office, and we even had a band. After we had practiced long and dili- gently, we gave a concert for our mothers. In first grade we had our first picnic in the South Park. Barb Lippmann fell in a puddle on the way to school and had to sit on the ventilator all day to get dry. Chuck Zupfer and Pat Mohr used to pass paper hearts to each other in second grade. Our extra-curricular activities that year consisted of tap dancing lessons taken by those who visualized themselves as future movie actors and actresses. In third grade some of us took part in the operetta, The Snow Queen, mostly as chorus girls in plaid skirts and long white stockings. We also planted a tree in the school yard on Arbor Day. As fourth graders, Corrine Mills and Judy Lohrenz used to fight over Tom McGannon. Then Judy and Carol Schramm had a royal battle over Dick Roskammer. One day Lee Sheppard and Tom Whalen had a fight at recess and came in for class an hour late. Susie Popp fell out of her desk in fifth grade and was sent out of the room. Janice Root wrapped up an empty box for a Christmas present for Miss Brenden, and signed Marie Wallner's name on it as well as her own. Poor Marie knew nothing about it! Waldo Narr made the big band in sixth grade, the first professional musician of our class, and became the idol of all those still plugging along in junior band. Susie Popp and Corrine had a fight when Corrine accused Susie of stealing her magnifying glass. Our first party in the seventh grade was the Sadie Hawkins dance where we had our first experience at dancing, and were we thrilled! With our big zipper notebooks, we proudly walked from class In eighth grade art class Miss Cornelius had quite a time trying to turn our bubbling energy into creative art work instead of less worthwhile projects. Carl Bloom- quist dropped a screen from second floor new building in Miss Erickson's eighth grade English class. As ninth graders we finally were allowed to come to the high school dances! Our class grew this year as we were joined by the rural students. Our sophomore attendant for Homecoming was Pat Doring. Duane Pishney, Jerry Schoettmer, and Shirley Boller were our class officers. The first pop concert was held in the spring and proved to be a success. In our junior year we sponsored Hutchinson's first mid-winter formal. In the spring we also had a success- ful Junior-Senior Banquet. Since 1955 was Hutchinson's Centennial year, there was a Centennial Day when anyone who wanted to, wore a Centennial costume to school. Our class officers were Steve Lee, Dick Julig and Janice Root. Pat Mohr was our Homecoming attendant and our float won first prize in the Homecoming parade. Our Junior Class Play was The Little Dog Laughed. After the play, we held a class party out at the Country Club. Our senior class officers, Bud Bergstrom, Pat Mohr, Wilma Schultz, and Pat Doring, with the help of Mr. Hurt and the entire senior class, produced a marvelous Homecoming. We chose Jeanne Fratzke as our Home- coming Queen and Nancy Peterson, Pat Mohr, Marilyn Stolpman, and Donna Smutka as attendants. Our Town was given as our class play. After the play, we had a class party at Barb Lippmanns. The mid-winter formal in February revolved around a valentine theme. The night of May 29, 1956 was the last time our class was together, for that was the night we were handed our long-awaited diplomas. to class.
