K HEN English-speaking people hear or read- the expression a 'E E happy faculty, an idiom which is frequently used by our coun- trymen, immediately, they think of a commendable. trait of 5 E character. The term is most often used to express one's ap- E E: preciation of a good quality or good habit of anotherg such as- He ,E E has the happy faculty of noticing oneis good traits. E E, .E 3' However, there is one group of people in this little old world to -in whom another thought will come, whenever, in the different walks E 'gl of Life, they meet this expression,-namely, the class of 1917 of the Hutchinson High School. As I look back on it now, from this dist- E if ance, as our own Miss Johnston, under whose most excellent instruc- i E tion our' meagre knowledge of American History was vastly expanded, ' 5 used to say, I do not recall an instance when the instructors who com- ,E pg-gd the faculty were at all formidable. Always, one might detect gi the tiniest smile lurking in the countenance of each. But how could LE ' they have been other than a happy faculty with such apt, docile 'E pupils to whom it was their duty and privilege to expound their vast E -gi knowledge of the vague and boundless tracts of the Land of Learning? Who, indeed, will fail to remember' that the most lofty and noble gg- E sentiments of our lives were gleaned while vainly grasping for the E l 5 fundamentals of History, English, or' Latin in the rooms over which the magnanimous Mrs. Richardson held undisputed sway. From the :E 4 days when -We were Freshmen it was to her that we were accustomed 1 if 1 to go with trials and tribulations, and always did she welcome us. 5 L f' It was under her noble instruction that we grew to think of learning .E Q as a spotless, iridescent goal which all are striving to reach. 1. To those who leave with the class of Seventeen, two names will .E H eternally remain inseparable--Hutchinson High School, and Principal W George F. Brooks. It was he who found us, a motely irresolute crew, E K and who encouraged our futile efforts until, with him as pilot, we ':: 5 were able to steer our small ship of state through the storms and .ff ' tempests of High School life. i f A bard might sing the praises of the H. H. S. faculty for eons, E and yet not exhaust their glory.
