lKAllWxlMll55Z Will? Gfllilltlmlllf Prairies, plains, windmills, and buffalos have all been associated with Kansas sometime during its statehood. People now travel the interstate highways, stopping only for gasoline and a hamburger, and still do not know or see the rich hertiage of the state located in the center of the continental United States. The prairie state obtained statehood Jan. 29, l861. The buffalo was named the state animal, the meadow lark, the state bird and Topeka, the state capital. Agriculture and agricultural related occupations provide the livelihood for people of one of the leading wheat producing states. Manufacturing, especially air craft industries Cessna, Boeing, Beech, and Lear in Wichita, the air capital, provide additionaljobs. Education has always been important to Kansas. Twenty-one ac- credited four-year colleges and universities and nineteen two-year colleges plus vocational schools comprise the post secondary lPliftMlll'llltMlF' V school system. People having a common bond form small unique communities. Nicodemus is a community of all black people. The horse and buggy is a familiar sight in Yoder as the Amish family travels to town. The Sunflower state has numerous interesting historical places to visit. Coronado Heights, located near Lindsborg, a well-known Swedish settlement, is one of the historical monuments. Other in- teresting rnarkers include the indian Burial Pit at Salina, Eisenhower Museum at Abilene, and the world's deepest hand dug well at Greensburg. The Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson brings visitors from all sec- tions ofthe nation each September. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Discovery Center on the campus of Hutchinson Community College, attracts visitors from over the world. The world's longest elevator is located in Hutchinson also. 4
