24 Student Lite Leaders in various fields were featured speakers or performers for the 1983-84 school year at HCC. Kansas Governor John Carlin spoke to the student body on September 15 in Lockman Hall Auditorium. Carlin stressed educe tion and the importance of quality in his speech. At the end of his presentation he held a question and answer session wit. members of the audience. Veryl Switzer lectured on November 10 in a specialprogram about the history of Nicodemus, Kan., sponsored by HCC and Th Hutchinson News. Switzer, a native of the all black community of Nicodemus,is assistant vice-president of student affairs with primary respor sibility for minority and special student programs at Kansas State University. The Dillon Lecture Series opened on December 9 with the 1964 Olympic gold medalist, Billy Mills. He won the gold medal in th 10,000-meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and remains the only American ever to have won a gold medal for that event. Mills, an Oglala Sioux indian, won many awards during his outstanding career, including a scholarship to the University c Kansas where he tried out for the U.S. Olympic team but failed. By running 100 miles a week for the next four years, Mills wa able to attain a position on the 1964 Olympic team. in 1980, Mills founded the Billy Mills Leadership institute-a division of the Institute for Career and Vocational Training. Arkady Shevchenko, the former Soviet Union ambassador to the United States, lectured on January 27 as a guest speaker fc the Dillon Lecture Series. Shevchenko, a recognized scholar and author, was a top political advisor to Foreign Minister Gromyko and held the highes diplomatic rank granted in the Soviet Union. From 1973-78 he served as the Under-Secretary General of the United States in charge of the Security Council and Political A. fairs. William Stafford, noted poet, writer, native of Hutchinson, and artist in residence, lectured on writing on February 6 and J Along with his lecture, he read some of his poems and answered questions from the audience. Stafford has had 20 books published, the first in 194 7, and has had numerous poems published in different magazines. He i retired from a position as English professor at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore. Maynard Ferguson and his band performed on February 20 at Convention Hall in an event sponsored by HCC. Ferguson bega. his career with the Boyd Raeburn band and later moved to England where his single MacArthur Park first became a hit. ln 1977 Ferguson received his first gold record award for the release Gonna Fly Now, the theme for the movie Ftocky. Malcolm S. Forbes, Jr., president and chief operating officer of Forbes Inc. and deputy editor-in-chief of Forbes Magazine, spoke on February 28 in conjunction with the Dillon Lecture Series. Forbes is the third generation of his family to write editorials in the 67 year old magazine. He compiled a book of his father's editorials which was published and won critical acclaim from the business and literar worlds. Forbes has been awarded the Crystal Owl which is awarded to the reporter making the most accurate economic forecasts fc the coming year. Forbes is the only person to win the award twice in the history of the 40-year competition. 1, Arkady Shevchenko, the former Soviet Union Ambassador the United States, lectured on January 27 as guest speaker for Dillon Lecture Series.
