22 Student Life HCC offers courses for students with a varie- ty of educational needs. Some of these needs are met by fulfilling requirements which lead to the acquisition of a Vocational Technical degree or an Associate of Arts degree. For those people unable to attend classes on campus, satellite programs that offers 54 credit classes encompasses Harvey, McPher- son, Reno, and half of Rice counties. In the fall semester 3,537 people were enroll- ed. Of this number, 1,284 were full-time and 2,253 were part-time. The average age of the HCC student is 28 years. Since HCC is a community college, it is more accessible to the potential student who is older than the recent high school graduate. Many adults find retraining for a different job is now a necessity to meet the demand of the job market. Others wish to sharpen their skills or add new skills to the knowledge they already possess. Ed Berger, Dean of Continuing Education, believes that education is addictive and learn- ing is a continuing process. Some people who return to school have graduated and simply want to take classes they missed or didn't have time to take while they were in college. Approximately 2.000 people took advantage of the satelitte programs offered in 14 com- munities. The HCC staff finds out what courses meet the commumity interest and then a schedule is made to accomodate those in- terests. Interest runs high for computer classes which makes those sections fill immediately. A motorcycle safety class has recently been add- ed. Solar energy has also been introduced into the curriculum. 1.Craig Herrmann and Alan Bohnenblust show their spirit at one of the Blue Dragon vs Conquistator's final games. . 2.0ne major part of going to classes is the homework that goes along with them. 5 l l . , .
