K 9009 QUUUUWL3 E3 iff' ,, The Kansas lf Cosmosphere and 'T Discovery Center is one ofthe mostimpor- 9 c tant additions to the l city of Hutchinson. The Cosmosphere is located on the Hutchin- son Community College campus next to the Science Building. The Cosmosphere staff has worked closely with the college administration and faculty by offering educational oppor- tunities to HCC students. The major attraction of the Cosmosphere is the OMNIMAX films that are shown in a specially designed domed theatre located within the building. The films can only be shown in a special theatre such as the Cosmosphere's, and are designed to give the audience the feel- ing of actually being a part of the scenes they are seeing. The Cosmosphere will one day house the largest collection of space exhibits in the world. An actual lunar landing module has already found a permanent place in one area of the Hall of Space. The Cosmosphere is indeed an important ad- dition to Hutchinson and the nation. Along with offering many educational experiences, it preserves the tools and equipment used in one of man's most important achievements-the exploration of space. k.- - One of the scarcities in Hutchinson, especially among college students, is jobs. With the economy not at its best in the central Kansas area, few businesses can afford to hire extra part-time help. However, the job services department of Hut- chinson Community College works with local businesses and individuals to try to place students who want to work with employers who need the part-time help many college students of- fer. The jobs students are most likely to find during the school year are jobs in retail and department stores, babysitting, and as restaurant help. The pay is usually not the best, but it does help the student meet some monetary obligations and afford a few luxuries. Some of the monetary obligations students have are the payment of all or part of college tui- tion, books, rent, bills, and food. The luxuries a student might be able to afford include clothes, movies, bowling, or a night out at one of the local hot spots. Many of the jobs acquired by students during the school year are available only during that time and are made by employers who want to help one or several college students make some money while continuing their studies. As the enrollment of HCC grows, it is hoped the city of Hutchinson will do the same in order to create more jobs for the additional students who wish to study and work at this college. 5. Being a resident assistant may be a trying job at times. But John Waggy takes it easy for a moment by sorting the mail. 6. Some students such as Sherri Gibson participate in the Work Study program which helps to alleviate the costs of school. 7. A unique job for Dan Smith is helping out with the planting and harvesting of crops along with the tending of several hun- dred head ot cattle. .14 J
