From the organization of our country in 1776 to its Bicentennial in 1976, Americans have at- tempted to interpret what is real and what is deceiving. Although illusions and realities are different for each, the individual may look at his surroundings in different perspectives. 1976 Dragon's Tale Staff 5 , QT fvfil ' My Reality fre-al-t-ef 1: the quality or state of being real 2a l1l: a real event, entity, or state of affairs 421: the totality of real things and events b: something that is neither deriva- tive nor dependent but exists necessarily - in reality: in actual fact. F , it T3 WW as M H' E l I l l I E i Landmarks such as Rayl's Hill, the Far-Mar-Co Grain Terminal and the old Hutchinson Cider and Vinegar Works are concrete objects but their functions are illusions. The Hutchinson Cider and Vinegar works, since torn down in january 1976, no longer serves a function but Rayl's Hill still remains a reality as it did in 1923 when President Warren G. Harding drove a horse-drawn wheat harvester across it. Visitors to Hutchinson also see the reality of the world's longest elevator, the Far-Mar-Co Grain Terminal. Reality and illusion influence everyone's life in some form. Reality usually appears as something that can be touched, but death and fear are realities that are intangible. 1.3 .. ,l- Classes to begin. However, there are many other kinds of people who attend classes at Hutchinson junior Col- lege. Many students who come to HCJC are having their first experience in living on their own and there is much to be learned. There are new decisions to make concerning food, bills, and housekeeping responsibil- ities. For the married couple there are even more deci- sions and responsibilities since they must divide their time between classes, studying, family and work. No matter what form of living habits students use there are new experiences involved. . Whether the job is to make money to meet college expenses, for future job experience or to make money for spending, the need for students to work is present. Some stu- dents compensate for this need by working full time and attending classes, part or full time. The majority attend school full time and work at var- l ious part time jobs. There are all kinds of jobs l including the work study program, clerks, secre- taries, waitresses, construction workers and baby- sitters. Center. Ms. Cecile Luce, the Director of the john F. Kennedy Library, retired this year after ten years of dedicated service. She joined the li- brary staff in july of 1966, with her first major task being the move from the old library to the new one. One of the most important accom- plishments as director was the planning and building of the Media Center. Among the special guests on campus this year were Clark Terry and Dan laffe. Mr. Terry is a renowned jazz trumpeter, while Mr. Jaffe is a well-known poet. Both had sessions with in- terested students to help them improve their Campus Life skills. 2 E . ss.. so if 45 Coeds Enter Beaut Pageants Although HCIC was represented at both the Miss Black Hutchinson and the Miss Hutchinson pageants, the honors were awarded to Hutchinson High School students. There was a new look started this year for the 1975 HCJC Homecoming. It began with the Homecoming candidates, which were couples, instead of the traditional queen candidates. The candidates sponsered by clubs were: Debbie DiNitto and Randy Gish, Dormitory Council, Donna Long and Lane Scott, lnter-Varsi- ty Christian Fellowship, Belinda McMillan and Kelly McC,illivray, Dragons Club, Lori Stohs and Scott Watson, Dragon Dolls, Cathy Thayer and Terry Ochs, Phi Rho Pig and Elva Wedel and Mark Walk, Theta Chi Sigma. The Homecoming festivities began Friday afternoon with a spir- it parade down Main Street, consisting of floats made by various clubs, the pep band, the cheerleaders, and the Dragon Dolls. Following the parade Friday night was a pep rally and bonfire. This year the Homecoming football game was played on Satur- day afternoon, which broke another HCIC tradition. The Dragons won the game over Highland, 29-0, Lori and Scott were honored during halftime. Ending the day was the Homecoming Dance in' the Student Union, featuring Snow. Northeastern Oklahoma of Miami ripped Hutchinson 21-7 for the first loss. Dodge City blocked a Dragon field goal attempt with one minute to go in the game to salvage a 9-7 win. Coffeyville, who ended the season as the na- tion's number two ranked team, dropped HCjC 20-14 to hand the Dragons their third loss in as many games. The Dragons picked up their first win of the season by defeating Cowley County 17-6. Nathan Woods and Steve Brunin scored one touchdown each, and Kurt Mosley kicked a field goal and two extra points to round out the scoring attack. In a surprising upset, next week the Dragons defeated the number two ranked Fort Scott Greyhounds 20-7. Steve Brunin and Mack Green each scored a six-pointer, and Kurt Mosley scored eight points on two extra points and two field goals. Hutchinson evened their record at 3-3 with a 29-0 rout of Highland in an afternoon Homecoming game. Nathan Woods scored two touchdowns and Mack Green and Marc Williamson each added one. Kurt Mosley booted a field goal and two extra points. Lori Stohs and Scott Wat- son were elected as the Homecoming couple at the crowning ceremony at halftime. The Dragons blanked the Pratt Beavers 14-0 at Pratt to extend their win streak to four games. Nathan Woods and nish 6-3-1 Keith Sidney each scored a touchdown with Mosley con- necting on both the extra point attempts. Kurt Mosley's 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter lifted the Dragons past Garden City by a score of 17-14. The win was the fifth straight for Hutchinson. Mike Wil- son scored two touchdowns with Mosley kicking both the points after touchdowns. In a driving rain, the Dragons downed Independence 14-7. Woods and Green each scored a touchdown with Molsey again booting both extra points. The Dragons finished the season with a 10-10 tie against the Butler County Grizzlies. Mosley kicked a field goal and the extra point after Nathan Woods' one-yard touch- down run to account for all the points. Nathan Woods led all Dragon scorers with 42 points on seven TD's. Kurt Mosley was second with 35 points on six field goals and seventeen extra points. Hutchinson placed five men on the 1975 Kansas jay- hawk junior College Conference All-Star offensive and defensive teams. john Ross and Preston Nichols were named to the first team offense, and Dan Muder and Wayne Ricks were named to the first team defensive squad. Hutchinson hosted a tournament which Cloud County won by defeating Hesston College. The Blue Dragon team took sixth place out of the eight teams entered. The Blue Dragons also hosted a quadrangular meet in the Sports Are- na. The competition proved to be tough as not one of the teams entered went home without at least one loss in the meet. Coach Orthwein stated this year's three graduating sopho- mores, Shauna Forsyth, Karen Martin and jerry Tipton, will have a definite effect on next year's team. The loss of these graduating players will be greatly noticed as they are three of the best all-around volleyball players in this conference, but there will be several returning freshmen who have the po- tential to make a strong team. The second season, which included the Dragon's sixth straight layhawk juco Western Division Title and a semi- final finish in the Region Vl Tournament, ended with 12 wins and 6 losses. The ending overall record of 14-14 did not reflect Coach Dick C-isel's pre-season expectations, however, the team was able to repeat as conference champions and compete in the Region VI tourney. Kelvin Branch led the team in both scoring and re- bounding. He averaged 18.2 points per game and ob- tained a total of 263 rebounds. Dodge City won the meet, followed by Hesston in second place. Hutchinson tied with Cloud County to finish out the top three places of the nine teams entered. Coach Linda james was well pleased with the season. She stated the girls worked hard in practice, and each meet they did a little better as a team, as well as improving individually. Ms. james commented that a new rule change of no limit on the number of events for each person helped the team. The seven girls out for track had to more than double up on the number of events they participated in to give Hutchinson any kind of a chance. ' Simi.,-Q ,,.. at - , f ..1,.tf.,. He stated this season was the best for the team in its two year history. Going into the Western Division playoffs, which the Dragons hosted, the team held a 20-5 record. Rain interrupted the tournament and forced delays of several games. The diamondmen won their first round game from Barton County 3-0. They next defeated St. john of Winfield 11-0. The Dragons next lost to Garden City 'I-2. That dropped them into the losers bracket with St. john. In the game with St. john, Keith Christner broke his collarbone after hitting the centerfield fence while chasing a fly ball. Then only five innings later, Dan Kanngiesser twisted his knee when he was knocked down on a play at second base. The team had to scramble, but came from behind to defeat St. john 9-6. By winning this game, the Dragons qualified for the finals against Garden City. Hutchinson won the first game of the finals, 9-2, which evened the Dragons' and Broncbus- ters' losses at one each for the tournament. 156, 157 The theme of reality and illusion was sometimes diffi- cult to portray. Not everyone could agree which was which. This theme has recurred throughout our histo- ry, with our forefathers also having trouble distinguish- ing the two. This is America's Bicentennial, and we are all reliving the past, through commercialism. Advertis- ing of this type can distort the reality of a specific time period and make America always look good. Yet, if we are honest, we know that this is not true. At this time, we must begin to look to the future and face the reali- ties without covering them with illusions. HCIC, as an institution of learning, takes all one step closer to the reality of the future. The 1975-76 Dragon's Tale is dedi- cated to all the students, faculty, and college personnel because they are the school. Without them, it is merely buildings. jacque Magie .ha L
