'UMM .Mgkeal cflfeem fDEDlCATlONl To SUPERINTENDENT ANDREW JACKSON LANG for the in- spiration he has afforded us in the class room, for the zealous interest he has shown at all times in our personal advancement and in our school activities, for a character which has enriched our lives . . . the Classes of l949, 1950, and 1951 dedicate this book. "But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully." . . . Timothy 128. MR. LANG uses it lawfully for he is A Judge, An Eminent Lawyer, An Honored Administrator, A Noted Educator, A Profound Scholar, A Noble Citizen, A Friend . . . who has served his nation, his state, his city with that same sacrificial devotion and exemplary zeal which have characterized his loyalty and service to Huron High School for the past three decades. He is strong, yet gentle, self-respecting, yet not conceited, candid, yet courteousg loves freedom, yet respects law. We appreciate his service for the cause of public education. His contributions as Superintendent of the Huron City Schools have been many and varied and need not be enumerated in detail here. His admin- istration encompassed the years of the depression and of World War II when succeeding crises threatened the schools of the nation, state, and city. These crgises were met in stride and solved completely or alleviated as much as conditions would permit. He has every right to feel that he has fought the good fight for the cause of public education

f igem, jorfg- inerri t F O R E W O R D l ln teaching history nothing is more important or difficult than to make students, young and old, feel the past as a vivid realityg to con- vince them that great historic figures were living, breathing men, and that events of former cpochs are closely linked with those of today. In the Tiger of '49 We have a most ingenious device for presenting the past as if it were occurring in the present. Using the theme, TIGERS, FORTY- NINERS, We have commemorated in this centennial year the California Gold Rush, one of the outstanding episodes in our nation's history. The Rush for Gold is a thrilling chapter in the history of our country. It is a story of early California, of mining camps, and of western trails. It is a story of the courage and vision of the rugged, sturdy man. The rapid development of that territory made possible our great present day industries in the West-agriculture, lumbering, cattle raising, fishing, railroading, shipping-all of which contribute so greatly to our national Wealth and prosperity.
