With a feeling of pride and a little sadness, we the Seniors of 1941 have come to the end of our four years' stay in H. H. S. These have been four eventful years for all of us—years filled to the brim with work, play, and lots of happiness. During the year, our last spent as high school students, we were led by our four competent Senior officers. Wendal Payne, one of our outstanding students, served as President, while the Vice-Fresidency was filled by Sue Dale Fleming. Mary Drake was Secretary, and Eugene Varin was Treasurer. These four officers, working with Mrs. Tom Dark, our sponsor, helped to make our last year in H. H. S. the successful one that it was. Yes, it has been fun being dignified Seniors this year, and to you and all the future Huntsville High students may we wish all the good luck possible and our sincere hopes that you keep up the good old H. H. S. traditions. THE SENIORS. Page Six SENIORS WILODEAN ALLEN-Lctin Club '38 . . . Page Twenty-eight THE PUBLISHERS Our Annual Staff began work lacking in experience, but filled with the determination to make the '41 Pierian the best annual ever. Although the problem of raising funds was a big one, it has not been an unpleasant one. The staff of '41 was composed of the following: Frank Todd, Editor-in-Chief; Mary Jane Laughlin, Assistant; Thomas Burkett, Business Manager,- Eugene Varin, Assistant; Mary Drake, Senior Class Editor; Doris Garvin, Assistant; Sue Dale Fleming, Undergraduate Editor; Malcolm Cantrell, Sports Editor,- Sarah Monroe, Club Editor; Ruth Butler, Art Editor,- Ada McCaleb, Feature Editor,- Henry Lee Hilson, Circulation Manager; John Kinsey, Assistant; Cowan Havrcn, Advertising Manager,- Brownie A. Holmberg, Assistant; David Bentley, Photographer; Pat Richardson, Assistant; Lorene Wood, Typist; Ben Harbin, Typist; Iva Marie Miller, Typist. Under the splendid guidance of Miss Harriet Bell, our sponsor, and Coach Milton Frank, our financial advisor, the staff has spent many hours planning pages, taking pictures, selling ads, and doing other various jobs connected with the publishing of an annual. Every member of the staff has worked long and hard in order to make the 1941 Pierian the best annual ever. Page Thirty-five SENIOR BAND MAJORETTES OUR BAND In the fall cf 1939 when Mr. George came to us and started the organization of the band, ncne of us believed that we would be able to progress so rapidly. Through the cooperation of the school authorities and various organizations cf the community, it has been possible to develop our band to a point where we believe we can be justly proud of it. Our activities for the school year of 1939-'40 are ancient history; so, let us scan the accomplishments of the past year. During the summer, we played for various parades and barbecues. A trip to Birmingham to the American Legion Convention and later a trip to the same city for a band contest were the highlights cf the summer season. The beginning of the school year brought us into a new era with our band. To many of us, September, 1941, will go down in history for one epoch-making event. Of course, we are referring to those new uniforms. We do not want to hurt anyone's feelings, but we still think our band uniforms are about the prettiest that we have ever seen. Decked in our new regalia, we made our first appearance at the Huntsville-Joe Bradley football game. Despite the fact that we still had our attention centered on those new uniforms, we observed another step of progress when the Junior Band made its first public appearance in the Madison County Fair Parade. JUNIOR BAND SENIOR BAND For the football game with Decatur, our band gave its first lighted performance. The glowing, translucent footlights on the feet of each band member, and the glittering plastic of the lighted batons gave a novel effect to the intricate formations. We were especially proud because band members had aided in the design and construction of these lights. One of our most spectacular appearances was featured at the Homecoming game when both bands appeared on the football field simultaneously and formed the words HAIL ALUMNI . Trips to Decatur and Athens were events of the last weeks of the season. Our last appearance of 1940 was at the Blue-Gray Celebration in Montgomery. Besides enjoying the excursion, we are very proud of the fact that we won third place in competition with twenty-two bands. In March many of us went to the Alabama Music Festival held in Tuscaloosa. We were pleased when Dorothy Laxson won first chair in the piccolo section and Peggy Jones won a superior ration in drum-majoring. The climax of our year was reached May 2, 1941 when we gave our Second Annual Spring Concert. In closing may we say that we hope to be able to foster better school spirit and more interest in school activities by a constant program of self-improvement. JUNIOR BAND MAJORETTES LET'S ALL SING The Glee Club is one of the oldest organizations of H. H. S. During the years we have made much progress, and the last two years have made trips to the Alabama Music Festival at the University. The members are: Irma Jean Barber, Peggy Baxter, Mildred Berry, June Campbell, Marjean Caneer, Florence Davies, Emily Davis, Dorothy Dixon, Helen Elliott, Fay Finley, Carol Ford, Helen Hall, Mauvelene Hardman, Anne Latham, Frances McAdams, Iva Marie Miller, Jane Mims, Charlsie Nichols, Louise Pointer, Geneva Posey, Wilma Renegar, Irene Rowe, Elsie Sanderson, Emily Simms, Marie Starr, Sara Stogner, Sara Teague, Elizabeth Watts, Jane Watts, Margaret Wilson, Lorene Wood, Dorothy Woodall, Mrs. Nell Young, Sponsor. Page Thirty-eight THE RED AND BLUE “Some coll it gossip, but we call it news ' The Red and Blue was founded on November 1, 1935, by the Senior English Class. Today the Red and Blue is the best school paper in its class in the State of Alabama. This year Catherine Nicholson served as Editor, Irwin Taylor as Business Manager, Frank Morring as Circulation Manager, Mrs. J. E. ATETTEVILL MLVASHED ou Page Forty-eight After a year spent as hard working Juniors and a wonderful summer, we came back to cur Alma Mater as Seniors at last. Scon after school was resumed, the football season started with the Panthers defeating Joe Bradiey. For the first time in H. H. S. history, we sponsored a Homecoming parade and game. The festivities cpened with a huge bonfire and a pep meeting. On the eve cf the H. H. S.-Fayetteville game, a colorful parade, led by our band, formed at the school and made its way through the streets cf Huntsville. Honors were carried away by Aunt Jemima Richardson and Albert Watkins, who captured the crowd with his amusing antics in the J. U. G. jail. It was loads of fun and the Home Economics Club proved it could not cnly cock, but decorate flcats tco, when it received the prize as the most beautiful float. The Hi-Y club tcok the prize as the most original float. The Fayetteville-Huntsville game boosted one of the largest crowds of the season, although it ended in a tie with neither team scoring. Toward the end cf the season, most of us made the annual pilgrimage to Decatur to see our boys mow down the Red Raiders. And what a game it was, filled with action, thrills, icicles. Never has it been so cold! In spite of frost-bitten feet, chattering teeth, and an icy gale, the Panthers thawed out and froze Decatur to the tune of 7 to 6. Next came the Thanksgiving Holidays. On Thanksgiving Day our team played the cnly afternoon game of the season, when we played our final game in Athens. It was an exciting climax to our '40 season and it was with regret that we Seniors watched our beys go off the field for the last time. Although football season ended, our band didn't, and marched right on in their smart uniforms to capture third place in the state Page Forty-nine Hello! . . . One up for Huntsville . . . Guess Who? . . . Surprised, Butch? . . . When Do We Start? . , . Red and Blue Staff . . . Yea Huntsville, Fight!!! I rmi Page Fifty contest. Three cheers for Mr. George, Brownie, Edwin and all the rest who go to make up our grand band. After the Thanksgiving Holidays, we tried to settle down to our lessons and keep our minds off the Christmas Holidays which were not far away. During this time The Red and Blue stole honors at a state convention by winning first place as the best high school paper of its kind in Alabama. Take a look sometime at the trophy we received. And what should turn up around December the 18th but the long awaited Christmas Vacation! Joyfully we threw our books in our lockers, bade our teachers a Merry Xmas and dashed off to a glorious two weeks filled with holly, Christmas gifts, and dances—Oh those wonderful dances! When we limped back to good old H. H. S. worn out but happy, all agreed that Xmas was wonderful if taken slowly and once a year. With the new term, the staff really began work on the Pierian, and through the splendid guidance of our sponsor we finally sent the annual to the publishers. We really felt like dignified Seniors the day our class rings arrived. Every Senior was showing his or her ring to every underclassman with very much pride. Soon after the new term began. Coach started the basketball team to work in earnest. Our newly redecorated gym was filled to capacity at every game and it was noticed that enthusiasm over basketball was greater than in many years. In late February we were hosts to the Eighth District Tournament and although our boys didn't reach the finals, they made a good showing and we were rightfully proud of them. This year will also be remembered for the numerous and much-hated Stagette Dances. The boys didn't like them at all, but every one present was certainly the belle of the ball and many girls were heard to remark Gosh, imagine getting a rush like that! March 27th and 28th will be remembered especially by the Pierian staff for the A. E. A. Holidays. Although it was only two days, it gave us time to catch up on the much needed sleep we had missed due to our struggle with the annual. During the last two months of school, a visitor might have thought a large portion of our student body was a little crazy. But it was only the poor Juniors racking their brains for methods by which they might secure money enough to feed the Seniors. They sponsored several concerts and dances to raise money. We breathed a sigh of relief when they finally announced that we could eat. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance was a huge success, and many, many thanks to you Seniors of '42. After a glorious commencement week, we gathered as students at H. H. S. for the last time and it was with a little sadness and a great deal of excitement that we received our diplomas and left our carefree high school days forever . . . Frank, a man of strong will, has always had spirited, hard-fighting teams, this has come about as a result of his enthusiasm and interest in his work Since he has been coaching at H. H. S., not one of his teams has lost more than two games in a single season. This year, the Crimson Fanthers were led by Captain Gene Varin and Alternate-Captain Charles Hopper. Captain Varin is a Senior this year and has played on the football team for the past four years. Alternate-Captain Hopper is a Junior and has played for the past two years. Both were real ball players and a credit to their school and team. FOOTBALL at 1940 FOOTBALL RESULTS H. H. S. 26 Joe Bradley 6 H. H. S. 6 Decatur 7 H. H. S. 31 Hartselle 0 H. H. S. 31 Sheffield 0 H. Page Fijty-jou, On the 3rd day of September, fifty boys rushed out onto Goldsmith-Schiffman practice field for the initial workout of the '40 season. From this group of promising material came the victorious Crimson Fanthers which battled through its games with one loss and two ties. This was one of the best seasons ever enjoyed by a Huntsville team. Huntsville opened the grid season against Joe Bradley High School on Sept. 20. After a very slow start, Huntsville finally clicked and the score read 26—6 in favor of the Panthers. The next game was with the Panthers' traditional rival, Decatur. The Red Raiders came to Huntsville with an undefeated team. The Tide scored first but Decatur came back and scored and converted, which proved the margin of victory. The Red Raiders carried home a well-earned 7—6 victory—the Crimsons lone defeat of the season. Hartselle carried home a 31—0 defeat as a result of the Panthers' third game. Hartselle had defeated the Baby Tide in a close game the previous season, and the Huntsville boys were lying in wait for the Morgan County eleven. The Panthers took advantage of every break and made a few of their own, in a very one-sided game. HUNTSVILLE HIGH Bottom Row: Monroe, Manager,- B. Taylor, Tate, Wilson, Emery, Beason, L. The highly-rated Sheffield Bulldogs invaded Huntsville on the following Friday and suffered the same fate as Hartselle. Although the Sheffield team fought desperately throughout the game, the Crimsons emerged victorious by the score of 31—0. The next victim of the Baby Tide proved to be Gurley who went under to the tune of 12—0. The Crimsons were slow to start but won the hard-fought game which was a thriller from start to finish. When Mortimer-Jordan of Birmingham came to town, the Panthers were expecting a hard fight and went on the field determined to give all they had. After the smoke of battle had cleared away Jordan had bowed to the Panthers by a score of 26-0. Amid one of the largest crowds of the season, the Panthers clashed with the Fayetteville Tigers on the following Friday night. Previously, Huntsville and Fayetteville had played to several ties and this game was to be no exception. Both teams failing to take advantage of their breaks, the game ended in a scoreless tie. For their next opponent, the Panthers journeyed to Decatur for the second game of the season with the Red Raiders, having lost the first encounter by the score of 7—6. The Panthers knew the importance of this game and fought hard. When the final whistle sounded, Huntsville held a 7—6 verdict over their age-old rivals. Taking their second consecutive road trip, the Panthers invaded Athens to play the final game of the season on Thanksgiving Day. Huntsville scored early in the game but Athens came back and tied the score at 6—6. The Panthers outplayed the Athens team during the remainder of the game but were never able to break the tie.
