I was so glad to hear that you were ap- pointed as our Ambassador to Norway. It must have been Mr. Vanek, who is now serving his second term in the U. S. Senate, that started us out on the right foot. You told me to tell you what the rest of the class is doing so as of our last survey, here it is: Our good friend Shirley Michels is the head nurse at Grant. She manages to care for a home life with two children too. Bob Boggs is in charge of the state parks in California. Bob Burns is now planning a new house to take the place of the White House. Bob McCarty is now the red hot editor of the New York Times. Charles Alexander just recently moved up to head mechanic of the Ford Co. Betty Gragg, formerly a secretary for an oil firm, married the owner. Shirley Shoemaker was elected Model Mother and is quite busy running their large estate. Shirley Blair owns three of the best hotels of Hollywood. Marilyn Good was awarded the ribbon last week for having the best Children's Home in North America. Carol Cutright is now helping John run a jet garage. Cliff Mortimer owns a ranch in Texas and is helping Roy Rogers. Jerry Darst has a private studio in New York, recently he has been photographing the President. Kenny Ralston appeared on his debut in TV last week, he was outstanding. Roger Kellough owns a chain of grocery stores across the country. Lowell Woods manages them for him. Edgar McQuay and Carl Black are co- owners of Toni and they have adopted a new type curler. Phala Dooley is cultivating West Virginia, a tough job. Margie Holbert is Superintendent of Schools of Ohio and is in charge of Mrs. Kenney. Eileen Mitchell, Janice Curtis and Barbara Salley all married multimillionaires and are the lead- ing society figures. Ernie Dumm has the heavyweight title of the world. Jo Nolan and her husband are caring for a nursery. Catherine Uhrig just came back from touring Europe, she says conditions are bad. Dorothy Williams is in charge of a hospital in Washington. Last but not least, our sweet Jeanette Burns is making a hit as "My Little Margie." The nation loves her. Many names have changed so I wrote their old names. The kids say they are hungry and are crying their heads off so I must close. I wish you luck on your new assignment. ' Your old pal, Sue. P.S. General Dave Robinson and family are helping rebuild Russia. I think you know Bob Cooper is Captain of the old "Nautilis." After winning this game they won over Beaver but lost by one point to Circleville in the West Fifth Tournament. We are proud of the Ross County Champions and we expect great things from them in the coming years. The squad was divided and Mr. Orr assisted Mr. Hurd by taking the underclassmen in a separate group. The infield developed rapidly, and with an experienced outfield and excellent pitching, the flow of operation became very simple. Our task was to develop a defensive ball club and work every spare moment on developing the batting eyes once the defense was set. As a tribute to the efforts of the group, in four consecutive league games, only seven runs were scored against us, the highlight being a shutout of Buckskin. Neil Uhrig, sophomore, did a beautiful pitching job every game. He had three two-hitters and one one-hit game. Johnson caught well his first year and Captain Ernie Dumm was a tower of strength at shortstop and at the plate. Ernie's position will be hard to fill, as will be the positions vacated by seniors McCarty in center and Kellough in left. Burns, Robin- son, and Ralston also will be missed. During the season we had six double plays, a fine defensive display. Southeastern, with a three year veteran team, beat us in the finals by close scores. We took second place and won a swell trophy. The names are engraved on it in the trophy case. Having filled most key positions with underclassmen, Huntington should win FIRST place in 1954. Congratulations, Boys! BASKETBALL 1953-54 No team probably ever played as many close games in one season and lost, as Huntington did this year. This was to be expected in view of the fact that seven county clubs were studded with seniors of two or three years experience. Huntington had only two regulars from the previous season, McCarty and Robinson. Underclassmen were selected mainly who offered to have possibilities of bringing outstanding basketball to Hunt- ington by another season, if not right now. Lacking height for backboard control, the boys had to be developed in man-for-man defense and press at half court to steal the ball rather than wait and get it off the board. Hours of practice were spent mainly developing defensive technique to tie into a fast break. Though the record doesn't show it, every game played this season was a thriller except the first game with Centralia and the first half with Clarksburg. Who can forget the night we scored 14 points the first half against Clarksburg and 56 the second half? Someone, shall we say, "Teed Off?" At any rate, the man-for-man and fast break boosted our average points per game to 58. This is really nice going. Mainly contributing to this offensive record was Neil Uhrig, who was, believe it or not, high point man in the county with 230 points. Congratulations Neil for that and also for making the first all county team selections. May your next two years, as well as other sophomore and junior regulars, be even better. Seniors Robinson and McCarty will definitely be missed. These boys were hard workers, good sports, and played for the love of the game. Bob McCarty was honored for his sportsmanship, when he received the award for Huntington at the tournament. Burns also opened the stops on the floor. Thanks, fellows, for some real thrilling basketball at Huntington this year. C. O. Hurd, Coach RESERVE TEAM Row One L. to R.-J. Moore, J. Salley, R. Grubb, D Harrington H Salley Row Two-D. Cline, L.
