Softball At Huntington 1952-'53 The second day of this school year, twenty-eight boys reported to Mr. Hurd for softball practice. The -Juniors and Seniors, for the most part, were separated from the Sophomores and Freshmen for instructional purposes. Mr. Orr assisted with the younger group, and the entire group responded rapidly. Huntington fielded another fine team on the diamond. ln- experience and lack of preparation time made it difficult to compete with other schools, some having played during the summer. In spite of this, the one lost record stood at 5001. This was the first year that Adelphi was not in the league. The teams were divided in groups of three throughout the county. We played Southerstern, the eventual county champs, twice and the Clarksburg twice in the league. Our team had batting potentiality, but we needed more time for maxium development. Several of the boys hit home runs during the season, and the average runs scored were eleven. One thing to be remembered concerning this season was that in eight games our infield was able to make seven double plays. As near as we are able to find out, this topped by far any tearn in the county. Neil Uhrig as a Freshman, did much of the pitching, and Ernie Dumrn took over the balance of it. Bob Uhrig caught. Mendenhall, Gary McKee, .Toe Parker and Bob McCarty played most of the outfield. Other boys, including Freshmen and Sophomores in the picture above, saw considerable action. This looks good for the future Huntington teams. This was the first year for the new backstop. The boys are anticipating the inauguration of hard ball along with track in the spring. The record does not show how close most of the games were. In seven contests this year, Huntington lead for three quarters. In nine contests Huntington led at the half. ' The new gym was being built and Huntington was forced to schedule more games away on larger, strange courts. In spite of this, fans who followed the boys closely saw,,much'exciting basketball. Robert Uhrig, Oscar Uhrig, and Donald Mendenhall finished their basketball at Huntington this season. They started every game and did a fine job. With a little more experience on the larger court, these fellows could have been rough for any county team. ' Eight Junior boys have been out for basketball two seasons now and will be the first Senior class to the new gym. They will play together for the most part next year. g There is a fine Freshman-Sophomore team coming along. They will play together exclusively, so that a good team can be developed at Huntington each year, with proper facilities and gym floor-size to work with. Probably the best games to remember in 1952-'53 were the early, local games with Bainbridge and Twin. These were undecided until the last few minutes. Coach C. O. Hurd. W E THEY 45 Catholic Central 46 37 Twin 48 37 Southeastern 48 53 Bainbridge 61 59 Clarksburg 54 46 Unioto 68 43 Buckskin 49 48 Bainbridge 76 59 Unioto 77 58 Twin 100 31 Centralia 82. 46 Catholic Central 63 47 Southeastern 64 53 Wakefield 63 44 Kingston 70 Reserve Basketball Season The Reserve Basketball squad this year closed it's 15 game schedule with a record of 6 wins and 9 losses. Although this record is not too impressive, we feel that this team has accomplished more than perhaps the record shows. In the early part of the season, the squad was paced by Neil Uhrig who proved himself worthy of varsity competition and was moved up to the varsity squad. This loss temporarily. left the team on shaky legs, but after dropping games to Southeastern and Bainbridge, we began to gain strength and turned back Clarksburg and Unioto. Future varsity talent began to appear in several Freshman and Sophomore boys as the season progressed. These boys, along with others who had to sweat out many games onthe bench, will be the nucleus of what we hope will be a better than average varsity team in the future. To all the boys on the squad, we think they deserve a "thanks" for the hard workand co-operation which they gave to their team and school this year.
